"In C" Performer for iPad & 50th Anniversary of "In C" - sfSoundOrchestra Event

iTunes: "In C" Performer for iPad - sonomatics

"Fifty years ago, Terry Riley essentially launched the Minimalism movement with the premiere of 'In C', influencing iconic composers like Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and John Adams.

Now, you are able to recreate history in the comfort of your own home.

'In C' Performer for iPad allows a single person to play 'In C', normally an ensemble work, as a solo performer. You can play the piece using the Built-In sounds, or via MIDI (through a USB camera connector or WiFi MIDI).

Double-tapping on a sliders will 'group' them together so you can adjust the volume of multiple instruments at once."

sfSoundOrchestra
commemorating the 50th anniversary of
Terry Riley's In C

On November 2, 1964 at The San Francisco Tape Music Center, 321 Divisidero, Terry Riley essentially launched Minimalism with the premiere of In C. Performers included Jeannie Brecken, Steve Reich, Jon Gibson, Terry Riley, Warner Jepson, Stan Schaap, Sonny Lewis, Ramon Sender, James Lowe, Morton Subotnick, Tony Martin, Mel Weitzman, Pauline Oliveros, and Phil Winsor. Although this classic work is often cited for its influence on composers like Glass, Reich, and Adams, its use of open instrumentation and dynamic form determined individually during the performance is perhaps more radical, and certainly more relevant to today’s Bay Area experimental music scene.

This performance is also the “App Release Party” of a new iPad app created by sfSound’s Matt Ingalls and Henry Warwick from Ryerson University (Toronto). Prof. Warwick will be present performing on the app as part of the orchestra. This extraordinary piece of software allows one person to play "In C", which is normally an ensemble work, as a solo performer. In this this way, and in a first-of-its-kind performance, he will be performing as an ensemble, with an ensemble.

The Crazy Ass Auction Contest!

Update: And we have a winner! The Cyclone went for $202.50. Matthew came in closest guessing $175. He'll be receiving a free Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ. Thanks everyone, and thanks again to Native Instruments.

Native Instruments wrote in to let me know they would be interested in giving away a free Audio 2 DJ [previously posted] to one of MATRIXSYNTH's lucky readers. Way cool Native Instruments!

Obviously this means we must have some sort of contest. I was trying to think of some ideas including having people send in their music or vids made with Native Instruments gear, but then I thought this might not be fair to those that like to tinker more than compose. I didn't want to go with a "first person to email me wins" contest as that would obviously not be fair to those of us who have to step away to work now and then.

So... I thought, "what would be easy, fair, and something everyone could participate in?..." Also, what could I make a series of, should other manufacturers want to offer free gear through the site. One of the staples of this site have become auction posts and us sometimes scratching our heads at what gear eventually goes for. It's frequently a guessing game.

With that, I present to you The Crazy Ass Auction Contest #1! Here's how it will work. Guess the final price of this fantastically blue circuit bent modular synth. The auction ends on Aug 23, 2009. On Aug 22, send me an email with your guess on how much you think it will end for. I will only accept entries timestamped on the 23rd or earlier. The closest person to the winning bid wins the Audio 2 DJ! If there is a tie, I will list the tied submitters and we will have a second auction contest for the final winner. [And that auction ended early - new one via brian c guaranteed to stay up follows].

Update: we have a new item! A footless Oberheim Cyclone! This should be interesting. How much is it worth?! How much will it actually go for?! What the hell is it?!!!

"The Cyclone is probably the best standalone arpeggiator around, it has a lot more than the standard up down stuff you find elsewhere. There are 16 presets and 16 user definable patches, 8 transposition stages per recursion each with its own number of repeats, inversions or programmable recursions, 2 independent keyboard ranges , it will do chords as well as single notes, and it will respond to tap tempo as well as midi clock. Unit is in great shape for being 21 years old, minimal normal scuffing, has bright display , the only 'defect' is that the 4 rubber feet underneath are gone.... an easy cheap fix."

This auction ends on 8/21, so entries are due by midnight 8/20! Anything after that will be discarded. Guess away! And yes, you can guess multiple times. I'll be looking at numbers vs. email addresses. The closest number wins.

Big thanks to Native Instruments and brian c for the auction item!

Note they can only ship to the US and no PO Boxes.

Todd Barton and Metasynth and Shakespeare

via brian c:
"Todd is the resident composer of Ashland Oregon's Shakespeare Festival among other things. He wrote an article a few years back on Metasynth ( see http://www.uisoftware.com/MetaSynth/index.php) . The article does a very good job of placing that software and synthesis into a context of actual music production for theatre (as opposed as to yet another TB303 groove). Metasynth allows you to visualize a sound clip as an onscreen graphix and then manipulate the image to work changes into the sound and vice versa. It's kind of like the offspring between Fruitlyoops BeepMap and SonicCharge SynPlant where sound derivation is indirect thru image manipulation. - interesting stuff indeed.

The article is at http://toddbarton.com/library/sound_advice_article.pdf

His site is pretty interesting too. www.toddbarton.com Shakespeare and synths - cool stuff -

Prithy, wouldst thou resonate with my four pole filter that I might divine thy note?

8-)

Peace

Noatikl (or noatikl)

"Noatikl (or noatikl) is a powerful yet easy to use generative music tool that will help you generate new musical ideas.

It uses techniques developed over the last 17 years through our work on the award-winning Koan generative music system, techniques now used in the all-new and superior 'Noatikl'... Many years ago, Brian Eno popularised the term "generative music" to describe music that is ever-different and changing, and that is created by a system."

Some notes via via brian c who sent this one in:
"Noatikl is a generative music tool , i.e. it generates a MIDI stream over several channels from a rule based set up. The rules can be very complex providing harmonic and scale structure , CC controllers, envelopes, pitch and tempo variations etc. The rules run up against a randomizer as well so this thing will never play the same thing twice, but is always musically coherent and usually interesting. For creating long ambient pieces it is ideal. I run the standalone version on an older laptop and send the MIDI out to my Ableton Live DAW and then redirect the notes received to whatever hardware or soft synth I choose to use. What the program does for me is remove the worry and focus over the playing a keyboard and allow me to focus on tweeking the synths on top of the music for the sound quality - sort of a virtual Eno-buddy to play with. I am such a shitty keyboard player, this really is liberating, of course you can also assign that control to the program too, but I like to knob twiddle. Prior to this I would use some MIDI sequence and then use Live's random tool, but there was never any guaranteee that the random parts would fit with each other. Noatikl assures that you have compatible notes. It's also way easier than MAX which is for really nerdy types. Of course you can also make it very atonal and dissonant if you send it those rules too. It is Mac and Windows flavored and there are standalone versions as well as plug-in versions. The only limitations that are irksome is that receives but does not send MIDI clock, so you have to synch it from inside LIVE if you want to run both. It also does not work well with Live as a plug in because Live does not support multiple MIDI -outs from a single VSTi, you have to route it out and back to MID-Yoke as a work around if you want the plug in version, I just use it standalone on an old laptop. Because it just sends MIDI it is not a CPU hog. And finally it's not a synth per se, but it allows you to set up a mix of 16 soft and outboard synths in Liveall at once and let them all work together on a piece ...awesome soundwall to say the least and the best part is it doesn't sound like a TB303 ACID cliche"

Update via the comments:
via Pete Cole:
"Hi! Many thanks for mentioning Noatikl.

Mixtikl (coming any week now) is a trans-platform music mixer, player and sound designer, that runs on Windows, Mac, and Win Mobile. It includes a built-in Noatikl player; listen to your generative music compositions on the move. :)

Sequential Circuits Tom cartridge set

via this auction

"Brand new - never opened. Cartridges are: Latin; basic percussion; special effects; and contemporary"

via brian c

Update via brian in the comments: "A TOM w/o cartridges is like half a dish of ice cream - this drum machine has 16 sound voixe slots but only 8 are populated on the main board - the cartrides round it out ...... what's really cool is that each voice can be pitched up 16 steps and down 16 steps and reversed so there are 16X32X2 voices or 1024 sounds in the device - and the coolest part is you can sweep the pitch with MIDI making it sound like you have 32 TUNED toms in you kit ...you can also goose the sequencer memory from 8K to 32K by populating 3 memory sockets which will yield well over a thousand sequencer steps ...my latest fun with the TOM is using AD Tattoo to sequence it ...nice combination"

Moog MP201

Box shot via brian c.
"SN 84. The shipping box lid requires you to cut through the label on top so I took this picture before I cut through it pretty cool, my only beef is that there is no software editor so you have to pick it off the floor to program it which means pulling up 4 CV cables, 2 MIDI cables , power and USB cables which is kind of awkward, or you can leave it on the desktop but that makes it hard to use with your foot anyway its way cool, 4 LFOs out as CV and/or MIDI CC, this will make my filters sing for sure"
Update via brian in the comments: "two other things:
1. the LFOs synch to MIDI or tap tempo as an option
2. there are 50 presets so if you plan ahead you don't have to pick it up very often"

AXiS 49 - Harmonic Table Keyboard, with Solo

YouTube via guitarDouchebaggery. via brian c.
" I'm playing the AXiS for more than a month now and since there are hardly any videos of the 49 version on youtube, I thought I'll make one.

I'm not a real keyboardist though, so don't overly criticise my solo, haha

The thing I'm using to do the pitchbending etc. is a Korg nanoPad.

You can find more infos about the AXiS 49 on http://www.c-thrumusic.com/"

Georg F - Purple Organ

" This is a jam type of song where I'm soloing on guitar, bass and organ (with the AXiS) + some riffage.

I tried to make it sound like a certain band that's famous for it's use of the hammond organ... something with "purple"....

For anyone who's interested in the gear:
Epiphone SG into an Orange Tiny Terror
Fender Richie Kotzen Tele into a Cornford Roadhouse 30
Warmoth Strat into a BB Preamp into an Orange Tiny Terror

All Guitar Amps went into a Mesa Boogie Roadking 2x12 in my isolation box.

AXiS 49 used a Native Instruments B4 II plugin

Squier Jazz Bass into a Focusrite Twintrack Pro Platinum (direct)

The silly cloud animation was done with FlightGear (free flight simluator)

I hope everything in the video is in sync thanks for watching"

WAV2Evolver Waveform Generator for the DSI Evolver Line

I was chatting with Brian Comnes about waveform editors for the DSI Evolver. There are the SoundTower and Vyzor editors that give you access to the full parameters of the Evolvers, but if you just want to create and upload waveforms, Brian let me know about WAV2Evolver, a free online editor that does just that. Thank you Brian!

See if you can make out my lame attempt at a waveform to the left. Note you can have only one point along the horizontal plane. I actually never thought about that before.

Update: the output is a .wav file so this could be useful for other synths and applications.

Some details from http://wav2evolver.beigemaze.com:

"WAV2Evolver is an online waveform conversion application for users of the Dave Smith Instruments Evolver family of synthesizers.

It allows you to upload WAV files containing single-cycle waveforms, and then download them as system exclusive files that the Evolver can understand. You may also download waveforms as RAW PCM files or new WAV files. The RAW and WAV files downloaded from this application use Evolver-friendly 128-sample, 16-bit PCM.

WAV2Evolver is also a waveform sharing application. You may view and download waveforms that others have generated, and you may share waveforms that you have generated. I encourage you to share your waveforms, although this is completely optional.

WAV2Evolver is an HTML5 application. If it's not working for you, please try using an up-to-date web browser. WAV2Evolver was written with the following technologies: jQuery and Bootstrap were used to construct the interface; PHP was used for the web services that transfer data to and from the application; the waveform conversion tools are written in C. The icons are by Glyphicons.

All of the code for this project is open-source, and can be found on GitHub.

Special thanks to forum user Razmo for his invaluable help in proving out the conversion code, long before I had an Evolver of my own."
