"Ian Fritz ChaQuo chaos generator triggering and being sampled by a TGTSH sample and hold and controlling an SSM2044 filter as a sine oscillator. The Z output of the Chaquo is used to modulate a Doepfer A-125 halfway through, and the Gate signal from the TGTSH goes to an A-14o ADSR which controls a Buchla 292c gate clone.

"A healthy dose of chaos for your eurorack modular!

The ED108-ChaQuO is a combination of a Chaos Generator (CG) and a Quadrature Oscillator (QO) and was designed by Ian Fritz.

The main function of this module is a versatile chaotic signal generator (CG). Chaotic signals are signals that have varying degrees of interesting irregularity without actually becoming random. This CG is an analog electronic simulation of the classical driven double potential-well problem, with the addition of extra gain in the circuit loop, and an extra cross-coupling path to extend the range of chaotic patterns available.

The double-well system is a "second-order" system and therefore requires an external driving signal. This is provided by the second part of the module, a sinusoidal Quadrature Oscillator (QO).

The two parts of the module may be used together or separately. The CG may be driven by any output of the built-in QO or by any external oscillator. The QO may drive the CG or be used independently as a four phase oscillator for the usual spatial modulation and other applications. Both parts of the module are manually controlled, to provide a compact, cost-effective unit. The QO has a frequency span of roughly 0.03 Hz to 3 kHz in two overlapping ranges.

This is a unique and complex module, we advise you to read the manual thoroughly to get the best grasp of how to use it.

"The Elby Designs ED109 TGTSH is now in-stock. This module is the second collaboration between Laurie Biddulph of Elby Designs and Ian Fritz ( home.comcast.net/~ijfritz/index.htm ). The first collaboration was with the popular ChaQuO ( www.analoguehaven.com/elbydesigns/chaquo/ ).

The TGTSH combines two important synthesizer functions. It produces trigger and gate signals whenever a "timing" signal input crosses a user-defined threshold. At the same time, the trigger pulse fires a high-performance sample-and-hold circuit that samples a second "main" signal input. New Yusynth Quadrature VC-LFO

"The quadrature LFO is a special module that was not found on many modular synthesizers back in 1970s. Mostly, only companies like Polyfusion, Buchla or Serge would propose such a weird LFO.
Basically, it is a sinewave LFO with four outputs which are running at the same rate but are phase shifted by increment of 90°. That is, the first output has a shift of 0°, the second 90°, the third 180° and the fourth 270°.

What is it useful for ? Mostly it is for modulating simultaneously up to four sources at the same rate but out of phase. This makes it possible to achieve so called "Barber pole" effects or "Shepard tones". For example, imagine that you connect each output of the Quad-LFO to the V/oct input of four different VCOs, then you'll hear continuous though steady (paradoxical, ain't it !) rising and falling intermangled pitches (see ,).
It can be used also to drive four VC-panners to create rotating sound effects that fill the stereo space.

The core of the circuit is based on the quadrature oscillator circuit of Ian Fritz's ChaQuO chaos oscillator . I modified it in order to have voltage control of the frequency and also I added buffers with output LED indicators and a toggle switch that makes it possible to exchange the phase of the 90° and 270° signals in order to change the direction of the phase rotation. This simple trick is very handy when performing "barber pole" modulations.
Each LED show the positive part of the corresponding signal, they are organized on a circle to visualize the phase differences between the signals."

"This recording was made using one each of the first two Ian Fritz 4U modular synthesizer panels. These panels are 100% Serge-compatible, but make a great little system on their own!

Other than some minimal EQ and level adjustments, this was recorded with no external effects or controllers.

I don't often take good patch notes, but I will try to briefly describe the basic patch idea. I like trying to make groove-based multitimbral tracks using smaller modulars, so that was the idea with this recording.

I am using the ChaQuO as the master clock in this patch. Since there are comparator inputs on the 4x4 and All-In envelope generators and the TGTSH S&H modules, the smooth, wiggly chaos outputs can be used for timing purposes.

The two drum sounds are the Teezer VCOs. Both are fairly simple pretty drum patches. The bass drum is the raw sine output, while the triangle output of the other Teezer is being processed by the Wavolver II waveshaper for the second percussion sound.

The bass line is the DoubleDeka graphic VCO being run through the Teezer VCF.

I may have been using the Chaotica for audio-rate modulation at some point as well.

There is a lot of flexibility using this two panels system!

"B-Boy Flange Hats"
Mungo dDS noise channel activated via trigger in modification. Flanging effect via Yamaha AD-202 Analog Delay.

"Conga Heart Beat"
MFB Drum-06 Tom Tom module into Analogue Systems RS-100 Low Pass Filter. The tom interchanges as a fill with the kick drum via alternating switching by using VCAs with an Intellijel Flip Flop.

"Snappy Chorus Claps"
Sound of a Pittsburgh Modular Generator frequency modulated by itself and white noise. The internal VCA of the Generator is controlled by an Analogue Systems RS-60 Envelope. It then goes into a Doepfer A-136 Distortion/Waveshaper and on into a Flight of Harmony Sound of Shadows delay.

"Rubber Bass Kicks"
MFB Drum-04 Bass Drum module Sequenced by an Analogue Systems RS-200 Sequential Controller into an RS-100 Low Pass Filter. I reset the sequence with a foot switch via a Doepfer A-177-2 External Foot Controller II module.

"G-Funk Bird Calls"
Cwejman VM-1 sequenced via an RS-200 Sequential Controller into an RS-110 Multimode Filter using the high-pass output. It then goes into a Pittsburgh Modular Analogue Delay and on into a Zoom 9200 Reverb.

"Metal-Beaded Cabasa"
Elby Designs CGS747 Cynare Simulator triggered via a Doepfer A-166 Dual Logic Module.

"Com Trusian Chords"
Roland Juno-106 into a Boss RX-100 Spring Reverb.

"Aztec God Rays"
While the Juno-106 is played polyphonically is also activating a mono channel of a Kenton Pro-2 Midi-to-CV converter which is controlling another Cwejman VM-1. The envelope in set in such a way that the sound emerges once the gate is released. It goes into a Doepfer A-199 Spring Reverb which is feeding back into the VM-1 via the audio input jack.

"Ticklish Chimp Giggles"
The result of a complex feedback loop involving a Doepfer A-138m Matrix Mixer, an MFB DRUM-05 Snare Drum module, an Elby Designs CGS735 Synthacon Filter, a Pittsburgh Modular VC Bend and an Elby Designs ED108 ChaQuO.

"Didgeridoo Error Stabs"
The Kawai K5000W keyboard is acting as a Midi controller for another channel of CV via a Kenton Pro-2. It controls 2 Bubblesound uLFOs going into a Make Noise QMMG modulated by a Make Noise Maths.

Modulation: Periodic vs Random vs Chaotic

"What are the differences between periodic modulation (i.e. a normal LFO), a random CV source, and a chaotic CV source? Some may be surprised to learn that the chaotic source is actually a cross between a random source and a normal LFO: its output can be fairly consistent for a few cycles like an LFO, but then it will create its own variations on the theme. In this introductory video I demonstrate these differences, both controlling a filter cutoff (one dimension) and the two timbre parameters of a 2hp Vowel oscillator (two dimensions).

"Slowed everything down from an earlier patch, rewire the clocking and reset the pitch voltages for an entirely different feel from the last session. Actually, much more work than just that but essentially the idea. This was not patched from scratch as usual.
A lot of fun coaxing some flittering pitches out of the MFOS quad quantizer to an oscillator sent through the Q107 filter, which was the last voice mixed into the piece. Also had fun mangling the mid tones coming from the Oakley vco with the CHaQuO. Havoc tuning never sounded so peaceful.
I plan to record about an hour of this just rolling along for a loop to sleep by but the melodic stuff will have to be randomized a bit more.
Another noteworthy thing was the use of three part chord structures from the Q960 and Q119 to six oscillators. The effort to plan each chord change was time consuming. Something close to composition (for a change)."

Yusynth Modular First Flight

"This is a quick video of the maiden voyage of my DIY modular synth.

Most of the modules are Yusynth designs, but it also includes a few Paia, CGS and Ian Fritz designs.

The patch is fairly straight foward. The two randomized sequences are generated by Reaktor (via a Paia MIDI2CV). A Kurzweil Mangler is adding a small amount of Delay.

About 2:05 you will hear the second VCO frequency modulated by an Ian Fritz Chaos module.

A big thanks to all of the DIY synth community, but especially the Yusynth designer Yves Usson. His designs are brilliant and sound unbelievably good! Hopefully this video does them justice.
