Experimentalists Anonymous

Just in case you were wondering what happened to Experimentalists Anonymous, they are back up. They also added a new "hosted sites" section: "I've decided to really try to put the "s" in experimentalist"s" anonymous, and start hosting sites having do with DIY stompboxes, synths, circuit bending, and audio in general. Be sure to check out the newly added Archaic Equipment Orchard by forumite Crochambeau. If you need a place to post pretty much anything related to the topics listed above, please let me know! I would really like to make this section grow as much as possible... the more the merrier." Click here and scroll for some prior posts featuring Experimentalists Anonymous.

Experimentalists Anonymous Mini-Optosynth demo 2, Vs. Amen Break

Experimentalists Anonymous Mini-Optosynth demo 2, Vs. Amen Break from Experimentalists Anonymous on Vimeo.
"The mini-optosynth is a pocketsized tone generator/distortion box, whose frequency can be controlled by a photocell, some buttons, or an external input. This video shows the optosynth with the classic amen break as an input. I turn the lights off mid-way to show what it's like with the built-in LED as a light source. For more information, please visit experimentalistsanonymous.com/"

Happy 808 day!

Update: actually... make that Happy 808 month!
via The Experimentalists Anonymous
"Today is a truly special day in music history. Not only is it 8/08, but it's also 8/08/08, which only happens once in a thousand years! For those of you who haven't caught on yet, 808 is the model number of Roland's famous Transistor Rhythm 808 drum machine. So let's take a day to celebrate the awesomeness that is the 808!"

check out The Experimentalists Anonymous for more including an 808 sample set.

Experimentalists Anonymous Mini-Optosynth

YouTube via eaced. Casio SK-1 gets fed into it about 1 minute in.
"Demo video of the experimentalists anonymous mini-optosynth, a pocketsized synthesizer/distortion box. Audio was recored direct to my computer, with only the SK-1 and the mini-optosynth. A million other excellent sounds are attainable with different inputs. The owner of this box wanted simple waveform outputs (to run through effects boxes), which is why it just does triangle/square. Also, with less light, this box has a lower frequency range, but I had to have the lights on so that you could see what was going on! For more info visit http://www.experimentalistsanonymous.com"

Jack O'Reilly - The Synth Wars (Cover)

video upload by Hugh R

"Just a separate upload of the cover I did for my previous video. Just a sick song from one of my favorite shows. Recorded entirely on my modular synthesizer (with some supporting pads done with the KORG Polysix)"

Experimentalists Anonymous Frankenbox Demo pt 2

YouTube via eaced. See previous posts on the Frankenbox here.
"Demo video (part 2) of the Frankenbox, a rumbly/crackly synth-in-a-box with two oscillators, a VCF, a VC-LPF, a sequencer, an LFO, and various inputs. The oscillators can be controlled by various components, including a joystick and photocell. Audio was recorded directly from the frankenbox to my computer. PLEASE NOTE - the audio is not quite sync with the video, sorry if it makes anything confusing! Part 2 of 2. For more info visit http://www.experimentalistsanonymous.com"

Microcontroller Synth Roundup

"Microcontroller-based sytnhs are a little odd because in general these little chips aren't too powerful; I'm pretty sure a lot of modern commercial synths use rather hefty DSP chips. But they're nice because of their simplicity of design, and I think most audio DIYers are more familiar with microcontrollers than dedicated DSPers."

You can find the roundup on The Experimentalists Anonymous Weblog. Included are the AVR based synths and the PICSynth.

The Frankenbox

"The Frankenbox is essentially an all-in-one synthesizer built for making distorted screeches, growls, and other awful noises. It includes two oscillators, a built in microphone, two audio inputs, a voltage controlled amplifier with ringmod capabilities, a voltage controlled lowpass filter, an LFO, and a sequencer. One oscillator includes a photocell and the other can be modulated by the LFO and the sequencer. There is a joystick that allows for frequency modulation of the oscillators. Each component was specifically designed with the intention of creating loud, rumbling sounds with crackling distortion over the top. The entire box, down the knobs, case, and LED color, was created exactly as requested. With 41 knobs and hundreds of ways to make the device interact with itself, an almost infinite number of sounds is possible."

Experimentalists Anonymous Sandwich Echo #13

YouTube via eaced
"This a demo video of the sandwich echo, which is a rehoused and modified danelectro PB&J. This sandwich echo is the 13th that I've made. It has a switch to extend the max delay time, a delay modulation circuit, and expression jacks for delay time and feedback. It can self-oscillate and is true bypass. This video shows it being used with a guitar and a synth, specifically the Novation X-station"
