Introducing the Fairlight App for iPhone & iPad

YouTube via FairlightInstruments | Feb 27, 2011 |

"Introducing the Fairlight App for iPhone & iPad, available from the Apple App Store in March 2011. Over 30 years since the original Fairlight CMI first changed the way we make music, we are proud to present the iPhone & iPad Apps, giving you the experience of a CMI Series IIx in the palm of your hand, complete with the full Series IIx factory library and expandable to include the best of the Series III library and even your own samples.

Marvel at the then revolutionary Page R step sequencer, gasp at the three dimensional waveforms in Page D and bask in the wonder of some of the most famous sounds of the Eighties!

The sound track of this video is also one of the app's built-in demos. 'Octagonalle' was created using original Series II library sounds on the Fairlight iPad app by producer/composer Justin Shave. Shave confronted his first CMI in 2006 when he co-produced Darren Hayes' album "This Delicate Thing We've Made." Darren had decided that the Fairlight was the only instrument which could deliver the '80s sensibility he was seeking, bought one on eBay, and handed it to Shave to tame. The rest is history.

The full dance track is available as a free download from the Fairlight web site.

The app celebrates the release of the strictly limited edition CMI 30A. 100 hand built recreations of the CMI IIx, using state of the art technology to bring you the true Fairlight CMI experience as never before.

The legend has returned."

The Legend Returns Fairlight CMI-30A Prototype to be Revealed At NAMM

The official press release:
"-Production prototype of the Fairlight CMI 30th Anniversary Edition debuts tomorrow at NAMM
- $20,000 ‘vintage sampler’ faithfully recreates the look and feel of the 80’s classic which changed the course of music
- Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Jean-Michel Jarre, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and many other icons of the eighties made musical history using their Fairlights
When the Fairlight CMI arrived on the scene in the eighties it changed the way we made music, forever.

Today every sampler, digital synthesiser, sequencer and audio workstation can trace its lineage back to this legendary machine. Known for its solid, hand-built quality and iconic sounds, the Fairlight CMI holds a special place in history and in the hearts of musicians everywhere. Used extensively by Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Jean-Michel Jarre, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and many others, the profound and lasting influence of the Fairlight CMI on the history of modern music is hard to exaggerate. It was, without doubt, the quintessential sound of the eighties.
Now, after thirty years, the Fairlight CMI returns. The prototype of the limited anniversary edition, the CMI- 30A, will be revealed at NAMM this week.

While maintaining the hallmark look and feel of the original Series II Fairlight, the CMI-30A harnesses the latest technology to deliver ‘that Fairlight sound’ no other system has achieved. Unlike modern samplers which strive for precise reproduction and accordingly produce a sterile sound, the CMI of the eighties made no apologies for imposing its own character. The quirks of this pioneering digital audio technology have been faithfully modelled in the 30A. The result is a distinctive sound which, in the spirit of vinyl records and tube amps, delivers a nostalgia hit.

In its initial form, the CMI-30A replicates the functionality of the original Series II and Series III CMIs. The user experience is quite different from that of a conventional PC and mouse and like the original is based on a light pen which interacts directly with a screen.

The character of this new instrument is continuously variable in real time. As you crank up the 30A’s unique ‘goodness control’, the quality morphs from pristine 36 bit floating point fidelity into the soulful sound that made music history. Turn it up to 11 and it sounds more Fairlight than Fairlight – chock full of eighties goodness!
Orders are now being taken for production units. Software development is continuing towards the release version which will deliver a unique combination of classic Fairlight warmth and cutting edge processing power. Only a fraction of the available resources are used to reproduce the original Fairlights. Optional software upgrades will be available for those who want to unlock that surplus capability.
With Fairlight father Peter Vogel at the helm, Fairlight Instruments brings a little eighties magic to the cold, hard digital world of 2011.

CMI-30A, the legend returns.

YouTube Uploaded by FairlightInstruments on Sep 21, 2011

"Have you ever wondered what your children will sound like when they grow up? This fun, easy-to-use iPhone, iPad and iPod* App lets you explore the possibilities.

So easy to use:

• Record speaking or singing (tap mic to start, tap again to stop)

• Adjust for bigger or smaller (swipe or pinch)

• Listen to how it sounds (tap speaker)

• Send the adjusted voice with a message to friends via E-Mail.

Once you have a sound you like, you can send it to your friends. Swap recordings, and see who sounds the most grown-up or the most awesome.

You can also hear what grown-ups might have sounded like a few years ago. Just remember that having fun is half the fun!

NOTE:

• iGrowUP requires an Internet connection and E-Mail account to send your recordings to others.

* iPod Touch 2G and 3G require an external microphone, such as an Apple headset with mic. iPod Touch 1G does not support microphone input and cannot be used with iGrowUP."

"The original Fairlight CMIs were renowned not only for their superb sound quality, but also their elegant and intuitive software. The CMI-30A combines the very best features of the Fairlight series IIX and the III, with significant new developments. Sound quality is continuously variable using the unique "goodness" control which spans from Series I, II, or III quality to "best possible" 36-bit floating point. The base 30A system offers 24 tracks and channels, which will be optionally expandable to 200 (details to be confirmed). Software upgrades will also be available to provide full post-production, mixing and recording functionality. Software functionality is being finalised at the time of publication. Please refer to fairlightinstruments.com.au for updates as development continues towards the release version.

Specifications
The CMI-30A is unique in that it offers the classic Fairlight sound that defined music of the eighties, as well as the modern Fairlight sound - that of uncompromising signal purity. Both these extremes are made possible by the extraordinary processing power of the Crystal Core engine which lies at the heart of the system. The Crystal Core media processor (CC-1) was developed byFairlight.AU as the engine for its range of high-end digital audio workstations. The CC-1 uses FGPA (fieldprogrammable gate array) to achieve performance far in excess of what can be achieved using even the fastest digital signal processor of conventional design.

"This video looks at the sampling capability of the new Fairlight CMI-30A. Of particular interest is the demonstration of what must be the most expensive way to create a sawtooth sound ever invented.

The jingle at the start and end of this video was produced using a CMI30A using original CMI library sounds plus the sounds sampled during the making of the demo."

Peter Vogel on the New Fairlight

"The 30A will look like and perform like the original CMI, although the mainframe will be much lighter for portability. The look and feel of the user interface will also be similar to the original, with retro green on black graphics like the original. A replica of the original music keyboard will also be available as an option, or you can use your own MIDI keyboard.

The software will combine the very best of the early series II and III features, with a multitude of additional features. Sound quality of 8-bit, 16-bit, or "best quality" 36-bit floating point can be selected, and existing Fairlight users can import their entire sample libraries. Even better, non-Fairlight sounds, such as WAV files can be imported and specified to play back with the classic Fairlight sound.

Internally it will be all digital, but will use FPGA technology to provide "virtual hardware" emulation which will exactly model the original analog circuitry. There will be 16 analog outputs and a stereo sampling input. All I/O will also be available digitally through MADI.

For an idea of the performance to expect, see attached description of the Crystal Core engine which the new CMI use.

We are builing a run of only 100 units, which will be available early next year. Price is to finalised, it is not intended to be cost competitive with other samplers, but of course much cheaper than the original CMI, even adjusted for inflation!"
