Handmade Music Austin #3

YouTube via EA78751
"Video from Handmade Music Austin #3, Dec. 20th 2009. At this workshop 13 people built the free project, Mini Space Rockers. After that we witnessed live electroacoustic sound by Lustigovi. And then 19 people built the upper division project, Andromeda Mk-4 Analog Bass Drum. And last there was an open jam with DIY bassline and drum machines from this workshop series, plus acid lines from a MIDIbox SID."

Handmade Music Austin #1

YouTube via EA78751 "Some video from Handmade Music Austin #1, Oct 18 2009. Twenty people learned about soldering and built Mini Space Rockers and Andromeda MK-1 analog drum machines. Everybody got a different Mini Space Rockers sound effect (like Skrew Bass, El Grito, Mouse, and Space Hawk!) Thats what you're hearing here... I didnt get a good recording of the Andromeda MK-1 jam though. Next month, November, we'll build the Autonomous Bassline Generator from 4ms Pedals. After that, the Nebulophone from Bleep Labs." also see Mini Space Rockers Update:

Handmade Music Austin

via Bleep Labs:

"4ms Pedals, Eric archer, and Dr. Bleep are proud to announce Handmade Music Austin! Starting October 13th at Salvage Vanguard Theater in collaboration with CotFG, we will be offering monthly workshops in they style of Handmade Music.

We’ll have free soldering, bending and diy synth classes, as well as workshops to build our forthcoming Andromeda Space Rocker kits. Early sign-ups for classes will start soon so stay tuned!"

The following are a couple of videos of kits in development.
The mixer has the four tiny drum machines previously posted running through it.

Mini 4ch mixer amp

Mini 4ch mixer amp from EA78751 on Vimeo.

"Prototype 4ch powered "pocket mixer" blowin out analog beats thru a bare 12" speaker.

This jam is crying for Gakken SX-150.

Pocket mixer: 2.8W service into 4 ohms w/ soft clip. 4 C-cell batteries. Connects to any external speaker with binding post terminals."

Autonomous Bassline Generator

YouTube via 4mspedals

"The Autonomous Bassline Generator creates deterministic bassline patterns in a sci-fi retro sound by generating melodies on the fly, based on a knob. It's just an AVR (attiny44) chip doing all the work, plus an opamp to act as the filter (photocell). The blue button is Tap Tempo, or if you hold it down for 1 second, it syncs up to the pulses on the IR receiver (this lets you beat-sync multiple Andromeda Space Rocker modules). The red button lets you edit a single note in the melody. Pulse-width modulation is currently pre-set to a certain envelope, but that will become user-controllable soon!

Part of the "Andromeda Space Rockers" series of modules, see www.ericarcher.net for drum modules.

The 6-pin header board dangling to the right is an ISP header. Totally hackable!"

Handmade Music Austin - DIY music workshops

YouTube via EA78751
"Handmade Music Austin - a new series of DIY music workshops for 2009-2010 presented by Church of the Friendly Ghost.

In a workshop setting, we'll present a newly-designed series of miniature electronic instruments, called Andromeda Space Rockers. No bigger than a credit card, these projects are designed for DIY'ers like you. They can be built in a couple of hours to make a working drum machine, bass generator, or micro-synthesizer. These fun little instruments love to jam together, and they do it by forming a wireless network to keep the rhythm!

Of course, there will be an open jam / performance once the instruments are built.

Workshop dates 2009-2010 October 18 November 15 December 20 January 17 February 28 March 14 April 18

Registration is $45 and includes materials

Autonomous Bassline Generator - out of the box

YouTube via 4mspedals

"Built your ABG kit? This is what it should do when you turn it on...

For more info on the ABG, go to http://www.4mspedals.com"

Autonomous Bassline Generator - basic demo

"Basic demo of the features of the Autonomous Bassline Generator, a low-cost, hackable, deterministic sequencer + digital VCO + photo-sensitive analogue filter + PWM controlled LED. It also features IR connectivity, as seen in the last part of the video where two ABG's are beat sync'ed!

Available as a kit from http://www.4mspedals.com
and will be built at Handmade Music Austin's Nov 2009 workshop"

Autonomous Bassline Generator - IR sync demo

"HAIRNET stands for Hairnet Audio InfraRed NETwork, and is the platform of choice for Andromeda Space Rocker devices. With this simple protocol, a branching chain of drum/bass/lead modules can be sync'ed up (or run at their own tempos, of course).

Shown here are two ABG's in sync. The business card is used to break the IR beam

Gieskes HSS3 jb Video Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Hard Soft Synth 3jb is the new audio / video synthesizer by noisemaker extraordinaire, Gieskes.

It features 15 modes of audio/video excellence, each with 4-5 variables of control. There are also 8 video-only modes designed for use with the trigger and audio inputs. An adjustable analog filter keeps everything smooth (or as gnarly as you’d like).

The HSS3jb can produce all the same audio and video as the HSS3i, but it adds many more color options and controls as well as a more stable and and colorful video output.

- 15 audio+video modes and 8 video-only modes.
- Audio, IR, and trigger input as well as trigger out. IR with Handmade Music Austin or Gieskes devices,
hook it up to a modular via trigger or use the audio input to control the sounds and video of the HSS3i.
- Analog low-pass filter controlled via photocell.
- MIDI input controls device parameters.
- Circuit bending, color switching, fade, and individual color controls for video.
- New enclosure and more compact design (5.5″ x 3.5″ x 2.5″).
- Outputs NTSC and PAL

The device outputs analog RCA, S-video and VGA but only the RCA is guaranteed to work with any device it is plugged into. Some devices don’t like the peculiar VGA it produces."

Space Baby Modulated Digital Delay demo

YouTube via WoosterAudio — "February 14, 2010 — Space Baby is a digital delay which will debut at Handmade Music Austin #5 on February 28, 2010 (along with the Bleep Labs PicoPaso). It has dedicated controls for wet/dry mix, delay, and feedback. A rotary encoder is used to adjust delay modulation speed/amplitude, clock source, and ring modulation.

The same simple 8 beat synth line plays throughout the demo. The demo begins with the dry synth sound, and then I start tweaking the delay and feedback controls. Later in the video I enable the ring mod / distortion. The ring mod multiplies the original signal by the delayed signal for unusual clangorous sounds.

The delay modulation and infrared beat sync features are not used in the demo.

MIDI-IR and Space Baby Demo

"WoosterAudio — June 10, 2010 — This is an extended demo of MIDI-IR and the Space Baby digital delay. MIDI-IR is syncing to an instance of the Audio Damage Tattoo drum synth running on a laptop. It is generating an infrared clock to wirelessly drive the Space Baby and Autonomous Base Generator (ABG). The audio output from the ABG synthesizer is fed into the Space Baby.

MIDI-IR and Space Baby are available in both kit and preassembled form at http://woosteraudio.com

Compatible Andromeda Space Rocker devices are available at:

SimSam sample-rate-cruncher toy

YouTube via 4mspedals
"Unveiled at the beginner's class at Handmade Music Austin #4 (Jan 2010), the SimSam is a "sample-rate cruncher" that's glitchy as all get-out, but only costs about $8 in parts (including pcb and battery snap). It's an effect with an input and output jack; and it's a noise-maker since a jumper shorts the output back into the input when nothing is plugged into the input jack. We built 28 SimSam's in a couple hours at the workshop... heh heh.. thats a lot of messed up sounds...

The SimSam was designed by Dann Green of 4ms Pedals, and its part of the whole Andromeda thing, even though it doesnt have infrared."
