You will notice that the sound of course is much better without the youtube compression. If you want to exactly recreate the examples you also need to play the same voices, which can be recognized by their panorama setting

To keep everything uncolored and clean for a real 1:1 comparison the stereo outputs of OB-X were recorded directly to daw using an apogee converter. OP-X PRO was rendered directly to harddisk as well.

Furthermore all voices of OP-X PRO before were calibrated to the exact same settings (pan, filter cutoff) as the corresponding voices (6 as well) in the hardware device. With a few exeptions always the same voices were compared by always starting at the same voice position in the circular allocation, which might sometimes give the impression that the same audio file was used. But if you listen very carefully there still can be noticed tiny differences. OB-X generally is a tad bit slimmer and brighter sounding with more weight in the heights and less in the mids while OP-X PRO is a bit darker and has more weight in the mids.

This modeling technology used by OP-X PRO is based on completely independent voices with separate signal path and slightly differend sound, as it is the case too in voltage controlled polyphonic analog synths which in fact are based on separate monosynths that are globally controlled. Other than real synths OP-X PRO allows to globally activate and deactivate the detunings of individual parameter groups on demand as well as fine tuning them for each voice separatly with virtual trimpots. This allows for a wide palette of colors between completely "pissed off" and tight and precise. This allows to recreate the character of different synths or to copy the voice settings and character of one specific device in its current state, as it has been done in this video.

The detunings of the following parameter groups can be independently activated and deactivated as well as tuned in detail per voice:

- oscillator pitch
- filter cutoffs
- filter envelope times
- portamento times

All settings of course can be saved with the preset. Have a look at the video to learn what impact those fine tunings can have on the general character of the sound."

"SonicProjects VM Bundle hosted by the SM Pro Audio V-Machine. Playing some presets of OP-X while tweaking parameters with an external controller device.

The masterkeyboard is an EMU X-Board 61 and the controller device a Behringer BCR2000. Both are connected by USB cable to the V-Machine.

Combined with the pre-mapped banks and the custom sysex preset of the included BCR2000 toolkit BCR2000 allows to remotely control every single parameter of OP-X (83 in total).

With MIDI feedback activated in the V-Machine the controls on the BCR automatically update to the settings of the new preset on preset change which allows for value jump free parameter control.

This setup can serve as a complete replacement of a real analog hardware synth offering digital reliability and great transportability without missing the beloved fat and organic sound.

A dry 1:1 comparison of the SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II virtual Oberheim VSTi software synth to an Oberheim OB-X Rev.2.

The lower manual in the video is an USB midi master keyboard (an Emu Xboard 61) which drives OP-X PRO-II hosted in Steinberg Cubase 5. No effects or any other treatments were involved, both OB-X and OP-X PRO-II were recorded directly to disk, OB-X over the line inputs of an RME HDSP 9632 which has very neutral sounding converters.

The exact detunings (deviating filter settings, warm up pitch drift, etc.) and the individual pan settings of the voices of OB-X have been copied in every detail before with the voice based tuning features of OP-X PRO-II for a perfect match to the real synth.

To copy the bright sound OP-X PRO-II uses the BRL (brilliant) filter setting (DMP button, second button above voice mutes) which is dedicated to copy the sound character of the early OB-X and allows the filter to open into the ultra sound area and adds some extra shine in the heights.

SonicProjects OP-X with Behringer BCR2000

SonicProjects OP-X software VSTi synth played like a real hardware synth with a Korg DW-8000 as masterkeyboard (for midi notes and program changes) and a Behringer BCR2000 to remotely control its parameters (using midi CC).

Due to the ability of OP-X for parameter feedback OP-X and the BCR are completely linked (two ways). OP-X sends a complete cc dump on program change which updates all parameters on the BCR to the values of the new preset. This allows for completely jump free operation. When you tweak a control in the software OP-X the dedicated control on the BCR does change accordingly, and of course also vice versa.

OP-X runs within Cubase SX with some TC Native Reverb and Cubase Double Delay added as send effects. The played patches are all factory presets.

To make the feedback work you must route the midi out of OP-X back to the controller device. In Cubase this can be done using a separate midi track for the back-routing (1st track: in = midi keyboard & bcr2000, the best choose "all", out = OP-X; 2nd track: in = OP-X, out = bcr2000). In more simple hosts like e.g. MiniHost just activate the needed devices in the MIDI input output mangement.

Needed versions for the parameter feedback feature:
OP-X: Version 2.1
OP-X PRO: Version 1.2

The feedback feature won't work with any previous versions.

You can also watch the video in high quality with stereo audio which also works well for full screen watching. Just click the blue link at the bottom right of the video.

Unfortunately there are a lot of really bad compression artefacts in the audio stream, especially in the high quality stereo mode (strings, brass, deep basses, minimoog). They sound like bad distortions, which in fact are not there in the real audio coming out of the synth. Try to think them away. The real sound is one hundred times smoother, cleaner and bigger.

"A dry 1:1 comparison of the SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II virtual Oberheim VST AU software synth to an Oberheim OB-X Rev.2.

Both the OB-X and the OP-X PRO-II were recorded 100% dry and unprocessed over an RME Fireface UC - the OB-X over the line inputs and the OP-X PRO-II via optical cable over the optical S/PDIF-input. What you hear is the pure 24-bit recording. Of course there unfortunately will be some compression artefacts from YouTube.

Oberheim OB-X voice boards compared to OP-X PRO-II

"Oberheim OB-X voice boards tuning trimpots and the autotune function compared to the tuning features of the SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II software VST AU synthesizer.

This is an addition to the 'Voice management and detuning' chapter in the official Tutorial: [posted here]

For this comparison we are having a look at the electronics under the belt of an Oberheim OB-X Rev. 2 with 6 voice cards installed.

OP-X PRO-II internally works exactly the same as a real voltage controlled polyphonic analog synth including separate independent voices, voice-based tuning trimpots, slightly deviating voices caused by device tolerances and temperature drift, and autotune.

The autotune options in OP-X PRO-II however not only cover pitch (as in OB-X) but also filter cutoff (as in Matrix-12), filter envelopes and portamento, and autotune also can be applied seamlessly on demand, so achieving any state between tuned and detuned.

Other than in real voltage controlled polyphonic analog synths OP-X PRO-II can save the state of detunings with the patch and so allows a different sate of detuning for every patch, which was impossible to do in the originals.

SonicProjects invited this engine already back in 2006 with the first version of OP-X PRO (in fact already its precedessor OP-X had it, but not yet offerig user-accessible trimports - only autotune) and was the first plugin manufaturer in the world offering this feature.

In OP-X PRO-II this detuning engine has was extended and refined with a seamless autotune option and quick calibration features."

OP-X PRO-3 vs. Oberheim OB-X | Jupiter-8 | Prophet-5

"SonicProjects OP-X PRO-3 comparison to Oberheim OB-X as well as Jupiter-8 and Prophet-5. Includes A:B tweaking as well as comparing cloned presets.

Setup:
Upper keyboard: Oberheim OB-X Rev.2 vintage built in 1980 equipped with 6 voices. The stereo output goes directly to input 1 and 2 of an RME Fireface UC which has very clean and neutral sounding converters. Signal directly recorded to disk.

Lower keyboard: E-MU Xboard 61 MIDI keyboard attached via USB to a MacBook Pro M1 2020 with macOS Ventura 13.4. The MIDI signal is driving OP-X PRO-3 which is hosted in Logic Pro. The stereo output of OP-X PRO-3 is directly recorded to disk.

OP X IPAD Midi Editor

"My new OP-X for V-Machine.
This synth is amazing!

The idea was to design an editor for the SONICPROJECTS OP-X.
And as close to the original OP-X layout!
I did not want to take a BCR200, this machine has a to ugly surface.
The OP-X is honestly worth to get a original shiny surface.
With the IPAD APP TB-MIDI-Stuff this plan was made real very quick.
Take a snapshot from the OP-X surface and overlay it with the controllers out of TB-Midi-Stuff.
Then define the MIDI CC numbers for the wright controller of the OP-X. It´s done folks!
I´m very happy with the result, the surface looks amazing and the real OB feeling is guaranteed!

OP-X PRO-II: Famous 80ies Songs!

Playing some famous 80ies songs with the SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II virtual analog VSTi synth. All heard sounds are coming from several instances of OP-X PRO-II, except for drums which originally were programmed in Cubase with Steiberg Groove Agent and then imported into ProTools 8.

So the only two instruments involved are SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II and Steinberg Groove Agent. No external effects have been used. The used presets of OP-X PRO-II are all available in the "FAMOUS" bank. OP-X PRO-II has been wrapped to RTAS with the Fxpansion VST-To-RTAS adapter.

OP-X PRO-3 | Blue and dark skins | Installation and Demo

NOTE: The Mac VST3 package on the demo version site onyl works for the demo version.
Full version equivalent for the full version in the login area.
The Windows and Mac AU packages however apply to both demo version and licensed full version.

The available alternative skins are:

"Blue":
This is the original OP-X blue used by OP-X since 2006.
Note that the original Oberheim OB-X wasn't blue but grey!
The special blue was invited by SonicProjects.

"Dark":
This is a dark grey-blue for people who don't like bright interfaces.

The plugin must be installed already to apply a new skin.
The skin installer only exchanges the graphics.

A later version of the plugin itself may include the skin color options directly in the GUI-switcher and the color default to blue then.

Background track:
Reload 001 session using the Reload 001 sounds which both can be downloaded on the "New Sounds" site linked at the top left of the OP-X PRO-3 product site.

OP-X PRO-II: Famous Sounds in a Netbook!

"Playing some famous bank patches on the SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II virtual analog Oberheim VSTi synth hosted in a cheap Acer netbook.

The used netbook is an Acer Aspire One 270 - 26Dkk featuring an Intel Atom N2600 1,6 GHz CPU, 1Gb Ram and Windows 7 Starter as operating system.

The used vst host is the free Hermann Seib SaviHost. Because of the small size screen of the netbook (1024 x 600) the virtual keyboard of OP-X PRO-II doesn't fit the screen, but luckily the main panel with all controls does which is perfectly usable.

For audio only the built in audio card was used together with the free Asio4all drivers for low latency performance. The used buffer setting was 512 samples.

The audio was picked directly from the headphone output and was recorded with a different computer over the line inputs of an RME HDSP 9632 audio card directly to disk. No effects or any other treatments have been added. As you can hear the audio quality of this netbook's headphone output is astonishingly good and is completely noise free. The slight noise in the video comes from the camera microphone which was mixed to the line signal for the ambient noises.

The used MIDI master keyboard (an E-MU Xboard 61) is connected directly to the netbook over USB and is powered by the usb port.

There haven't been done any optimizations in the netbook for this video, the virus scanner and all the background services are running.

Note that in this unoptimized state and without an external good low latency audio interface OP-X PRO-II only barely can be run and there is occasional crackling and overload artefacts with some cpu intensive patches. 12-voice patches have to be reduced to 10 voices by deactivating voices for a glitch free performance.

For serious and artefact free performance for all patches the next higher Intel Atom CPU (Intel Atom N2800 1,86 GHz) is recommended and if possible an external USB audio interface like the E-MU 0204.

The played patches all are patches included in the "famous" bank coming with OP-X PRO-II. These are the featured songs:

"Various methods have been used in the plugins world to copy analog behaviour. SonicProjects has made a new and different approach. By extensive exploring of the real device it became obvious that a big part of the organic feeling comes from the minor differences in sound between the voices. This has nothing to to with random behaviour but with device tolerances and slightly different trimpot settings. SonicProjects has implemented this behaviour into the virtual device. Each voice is a separate mono synth with independent signal path and comprehensive global tuning options."

OB-X Based VSTi OB-XTREME, OP-X & OBXD OSC & Filter TEST

By popular demand...let's do a basic comparison of the OSC and FILTER sound of those OB-X based VSTis, as nobody seems to read products specs and details..

No insert, nothing on the master bus, just the VSTs, same settings.

I have been used all at some point and they are all good, I will quickly showcase what the differences are and why OP-X, OB-XD and OB-XTREME have each their nice peculiarities.

IMO:
OP-X PRO is really good for lush PADS because it features interesting modulations the other don't have.

OB-XD is free (which is a point :) ) and feature a really nice clarity and top end the OP-X can lack while sounding warmer.

OB-XTREME have a simpler 'hands on' approach with far less functions and features but it provides 2 analog saturation stages before and after the filter and a FAT mode which makes it growl in a way the others don't.
It also feature 8 separate outputs so you can have 1 channel per voice in your DAW if you want :)

Basically I needed to have the "essence of the OB Sound" not the full feature list, mainly that huge analog wall we all love.

That is why I made OB-XTREME in the first place, in you liked the OB-X you should have them all :)"

OP-X PLAYER within Mac VFX

OP-X PLAYER, the cheap ($39) preset version of OP-X, played in realtime with no lateny on an intel mac within the new SM-Pro Audio VFX Application for mac (first public beta version). Note that the OP-X PLAYER is a windows vsti plugin!

The audio is routed via Cycling74 Soundflower to Apple Garage Band, where the audio stream is recorded and sent to the audio out, all without any noticeable latency!

The plugin could be installed without any problem using the integrated "Run VFX Plugin Insraller" provided in the VFX menu. The OP-X PLAYER is already adapted for VFX and V-Machine and needs no additional wizard file.

Note that you need an Intel Mac, PPC G4/G5 is not supported. Here's a short guide to try it out by yourself"

Kind of like the Oberheim OB-SX version of the OB-Xa.

Building a Drum Computer for the RetroChallenge 2021/11

"In this episode, I extend the pattern-based drum computer to full 16 steps / beats (4 bars x 4 beats), and tailor for real time drum pattern input (like a real drum computer).

This requires inputting data from the keypad using the KIN (Keyboard Input) op-code, whilst playing back the pattern, and hence isn't possible with the standard Microtronic KIN. Thus, I implemented a non-blocking KIN behavior. Utilizing 2 more vacuous op-codes, I can now toggle between the standard blocking KIN input behavior, and the new non-blocking behavior.

The op-codes for determining the KIN mode of operation are 3F0 (blocking KIN mode) and 3F1 (non-blocking KIN mode). By default, the Microtronic only uses blocking KIN. The vacuous op-codes 3F0 and 3F1 are idempotent immediate AND (ANDI) op-codes, i.e., the operand 0xF = 0b1111 = 15 is idempotent for 4bit registers, and hence, no (existing or new) program would ever use them. So it is safe to assign the mode toggling extra side-effect to them.

In general, the following vacuous op-codes are available for side effect extension:

MOV x,x: copy register x onto register x, 0xx
ADDI 0,x: add 0 to register x, 50x
SUBI 0,x: subtract 0 from register x, 70x
ANDI F,x: bitwise AND of register x with F, 3Fx"

OP-X PRO-II: Interfaces

"The newest version of OP-X PRO-II (1.2.6) offers two interface types (Synth Interface / Rack Edition) each in 3 sizes (standard/large/huge) via separate installers.

This video shows how they look in the screen of an iMac 27" Mid 2017 Retina 5K at standard resolution (resolution equating to 2560 x 1440 pixels real).

The alternative "Rack Edition" interface does without a virtual keyboard and empty chassis areas for maximum controls size on the smallest area possible. It furthermore also offers labels and dedicated controls for hidden features and calibration tools and a new way of presenting the presets of a loaded bank.
