Reon Driftboxes SE, J, and W

REON drift boxパフォーマンス Published on Mar 9, 2016

Note the video above is from March in 2016, so these are not technically new. Reon gear tends to be promoted via Japanese channels. As you can see their website is primarily in Japanese only.  They also do a bit of one off and customized gear. Check out the pink one!

Previously featured Reon driftboxes included the driftbox S, S ver II, R, Q, V, E, C, T, and G announced here, back in 2013. There were also modular versions and a Roland branded DriftBox R model announced in 2015. You can find demos and pics via the Reon label here.

BTW, the different spellings and capitalizations I'm using for Driftbox is on purpose. Roland branded it DriftBox with a capital D and B, and Reon interchanges between driftbox, all lowercase, and Driftbox with the capital D. I have also seen it as Drift Box.

That said, not featured here on MATRIXSYNTH before now, are the driftbox SE, J, and W. The following are some details Google translated from Reon.

1979 KORG Lambda ES-50 Vintage Stereo Analog String Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Published on Jan 13, 2014 keyboard resource·71 videos

via this auction

"- All note polyphony for lush, rich chords.
- 9 voices in two separate sections: Percussive (electric piano, clavi, piano, harmonics) and Ensemble (brass, organ, chorus, strings 1, strings2).
- Three separate oscillators.
- Overal tuning and tuners for two of the three ocillators. Tuning LEDs blink faster the further you detune each ocillator. This creates interesting phasing and chorus effects or harsh noiscapes.
- Separate stereo chorus/phase shifter on/off switch for each section.
- Interesting tremolo effect for Percussive section with rate knob for a shimmering effect.
- Joystick controls pitch bend on the X-axis and chorus phase speed on the Y-axis. It is designed to sping back to the middle of the X-axis. The Y-axis stays in position.
- Separate volume sliders for each section.
- Tone filter knobs for each section.
- Filter cutoff knob for brass sound.
- Key click adds a plunking sound to electric piano (similar to RMI Electra-Piano's "accenter" except you control the amount).
- Decay knob for Percussive voices.
- Attack and release knobs for chorus, strings 1 and strings 2.
- Stereo, mono mix and headphone outputs.
- Expression pedal input jack (can be set to either or both sections). It may require a vintage Korg pedal as it doesn't work with a modern Roland EV-5.
- Sustain pedal input.
- Keyboard trigger out."

YYZ on a keytar - no further description is needed

Published on Dec 2, 2014

"Welcome to another installment of ridiculousness!

Thanks for so many years of YouTube support. Despite my intergalactic adventures I am a real person in need of real support. Please visit patreon.com/packrat for more information.

This film was masterfully cinematographied (blorg?) by one of my very best friends, an 8-year-old by the name of Jaxon Ventura. It doesn't matter that you don't know who that is; your kids will absolutely worship him sometime in the 2030s.

It's all OK.

You have no idea what is happening right now. It's weird when time travelers post shit on YouTube. Anyway, that's just going to have to be all right with everyone, and most especially Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart, who wrote one of my favorite all-time songs, "YYZ," which I've decided to sequence on an old Korg O1/W keyboard for nostalgic, shreducational purposes, and play along with it on one of my 1984 Roland Axis keytars controlling a Roland JD-800 synth. This is all happening at the Safehouse, which is an independent republic located in the heart of Connecticut and recognized (by at least five people) as a sovereign state known as "The Din." Its liege lords, the Royal Din, are what you would call "my band," and while we don't marinate in this kind of progressive wankadoo horseplay while playing live in front of anyone, we do on occasion do some pretty amazing musical feats together. It can be monitored on royaldin.com.

Meanwhile, keep coming back to this YouTube channel for more feats of berzerking amusement, and of course umop.com for updates on my comic strip "The Packrat," which contains a lot of synthesizer references and other stuffs of nerdist delight.

Universal Roland EV-5 Compatible MIDI Joystick Controller - VG-99 GR-300 Analog Synth Demo

YouTube Published on Jun 19, 2012 by WayneJoness

"The "X" axis (up and down) controls filter cutoff on a Roland VG-99 model of the legendary Roland GR-300. The "Y" axis controls resonance.

By moving the Joystick up and down, filter cutoff changes. Left-to-right motion changes the amount of resonance."

Keytar Action in Retarded Animal Babies 22

1st off, this one is 100% NSFW. If you are easily offended or maybe even not so easily offended, do not watch the episode here.

That said, if you are not familiar with RAB, it's a toon by Dave, the man who brought us The Packrat and these excellent videos. He runs all of http://umop.com/ and plays keys in Parallax. You should recognize his custom "Tron" red Roland AXIS keytar. See this video. Image of Dave below via the Parallax site, not the toon. Hmm... is he the donkey?

Herbie Hancock - Rockit 1985

YouTube via cminor7add9th.

via Jeff Bova on the Rhodes Chroma list:
"That patch was Herbies. To have 8 voices he had each of the two layers of the sound in the chroma and expander. Live I play the part when herbie is soloing but played as a layer on my single chroma. Here is a you tube video I have been meaning to share, It's us playing live in tokyo at Parco Theatre Shibuya. You get to see more use of the Chromas than in other videos I have seen on line. ALl the sounds we are playing with the remote keyboards are Chroma patches, the sounds the other guys are triggering with dx7's are the fairlights."
Also Roland AXIS keytar and a turntable used for synthetic sounds. Pretty cool.

Modbap Modular Osiris WavPak Volume 3 by Learning Modular’s Chris Meyer

Press release follows:

Modbap Modular announces availability of Osiris WavPak Volume 3, carefully crafted by Chris Meyer to integrate seamlessly with Eurorack module namesake

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: Modbap Modular is proud to announce availability of Osiris WavPak Volume 3 — carefully crafted by Learning Modular’s Chris Meyer to integrate seamlessly with the black-owned electronic music instrument manufacturer’s own Osiris BI-FIDELITY WAVETABLE OSC (originally introduced to a captive audience at Knobcon Number Nine, Hyatt Regency Schaumburg, IL, USA, September 10-12, 2021), providing four banks of all-new custom 32 x 32 wavetables which have been meticulously curated and designed to expand anyone’s approach to wavetable synthesis using its Eurorack module namesake — as of November 2…

As the owner of Learning Modular, an online resource to help anyone master their modular synthesizer, Chris Meyer is perfectly positioned to help expand anyone’s approach to wavetable synthesis using Modbap Modular’s Osiris, operating powerfully in and of itself as a (frequency modulation- and phase modulation-including) seven-plus TIMBRE MODE 12HP BI-FIDELITYTM WAVETABLE OSC (oscillator) module, neatly-packed with an independent sub-oscillator, LOFI processing, extensive CV (control voltage) modulation capabilities, a PITCH quantiser, four banks of 32 x 32 wavetables, the ability to load user wavetables via Micro SD card (not included), and its own free open-source wavetable editor (OsirisEdit). After all, Chris Meyer is the talented individual responsible for creating the-then-trailblazing Vector Synthesis technology behind the 1986-vintage Prophet VS DIGITAL VECTOR SYNTHESIZER, supposedly intended to revive the flagging fortunes of US synth ‘giant’ Sequential for whom he worked in an engineering role. Subsequent stints at Digidesign, Music Maker Publications, and Tom Oberheim’s Marion Systems soon ensued, before becoming the Chief Engineer at the now-defunct Roland R&D US while serving also as Technical Chairman of the MIDI Manufacturer’s Association. A transition into the video and film industries followed thereafter as his storied career continued, coming full circle to ultimately end up where he originally started — playing with modular synthesizers.

Duly derived from Chris Meyer’s sizeable studio modular synthesizer — affectionately called The Monster, the four banks of all-new custom 32 x 32 wavetables included in Osiris WavPak Volume 3 are a result of undergoing a meticulous sampling process drawing upon the talents of one of the industry’s leading experts to offer Osiris owners a wide range of timbral possibilities catering to different sonic aesthetics: BANK A — otherwise known as the ‘East Coast’ bank — features wavetables that have been carefully crafted as a result of working with Livewire Electronics AFG’s Animated Pulses and Alien Saws waveforms, as well as Serge-filtered waveforms, using techniques such as audio rate waveform crossfading to offer a diverse palette of sounds, ranging from smooth and evolving textures to aggressive and cutting tones; BANK B — the ‘West Coast’ bank — incorporates techniques like Serge rectification, wave folding, and Serge resonant EQ, the resultinwavetables providing a more experimental and abstract sonic experience suited to those interested in pushing the boundaries of sound design and diving into harmonious tones and textures; BANK C — Formants — focuses on different vowel sounds with a sound design approach anchored around both digital and analogue formant filters for creating expressive vocal-like textures and tones that are ideal for adding a human touch to compositions or exploring more abstract and otherworldly sounds; and BANK D — Harmonics — utilises tube overdrive, filter banks inspired by both Buchla and Moog stylings, as well as featuring analogue and digital additive oscillators.

On the face of it, then, the results are all a testament to the expert craftsmanship involved in ensuring the highest-quality sound production possible. Put it this way: Osiris WavPak Volume 3’s four sound banks were sampled at 96kHz, perfectly aligning with the Osiris BI-FIDELITY WAVETABLE OSC module’s unique, high-quality 96kHz sample rate operation. Ultimately, users can enjoy pristine audio clarity, enabling exploration of full depth sonic landscapes.

Lending themselves a knowing nod in the direction of Chris Meyer’s trailblazing achievements, the X-axis in all the banks contain different waveforms, while the Y-axis introduces different harmonics for each X-wave; the harmonic series used in Osiris WavPak Volume 3 are: H1 (root up), H2 (one octave up), H3 (one octave, plus perfect fifth), H4 (two octaves up), H5 (two octaves, plus major third), H6 (two octaves, plus perfect fifth), and H8 (three octaves up). It is worth noting that in some cases — especially the filter banks, formant filters, and resonant EQ — the waveform also changes with ‘harmonic’ on the Y-axis, allowing for sculpting and refining patches with extraordinary detail thanks to this precise control over harmonic content. Modbap Modular encourages experimentation with different modulation sources patched to its Osiris BI-FIDELITY WAVETABLE OSC module’s WAVE Y to further enhance sonic explorations with the texture-rich Osiris WavPak Volume 3 — think velocity/accent from a sequencer or keyboard, a mod wheel, aftertouch, ribbon controller, or even a sample & hold triggered on each new note to create dynamic and evolving timbres that respond to playing style.

Osiris WavPak Volume 3 is available for free as a digital download exclusively from Modbap Modular’s online Shop here: https://www.modbap.com/products/osiris-wavpak-vol-3-by-chris-meyer

Watch Learning Modular’s Chris Meyer mentioning the-then-upcoming Osiris WavPak Volume 3 — while talking about Modbap Modular’s Osiris BI-FIDELITY WAVETABLE OSC module as a new way to wavetable — at Knobcon Number Eleven, Chicagoland, USA, September 8-10, 2023 here: https://youtu.be/tYkDT82wxx0

a NEW way to WAVETABLE! with Alias Zone & Osiris // Chris Meyer & ModBap at Knobcon 2023

video upload by DivKid

"Chris Meyer of Learning Modular & Alias Zone has A NEW WAY TO WAVETABLE!

Chris has been working on a new X and Y based wavetable systems that does two fascinating things, firstly it "samples" his whole large studio system while keeping that performable and responsive in the ModBap Modular Osiris and secondly he's using harmonics and interval sets to create morphing tunings within those sounds too.

The WavPak is out now through the ModBap site here // https://bit.ly/WavPak3-ChrisMeyer"

Lemondrop - Portable Granular Synth That Could by 1010music

video upload by Axis of Wold

"Note: One can indeed change the scale on LD. Read the informative pinned comment by GerenM dot Net. Thanks for info! 👍

Hi, this is Lemondrop from 1010music, what a revelation. At least that is my opinion, it is so portable it begs to be carried around, be taken with you on your next gig, next tour to the beach, it easily fits in your pocket, it only needs some USB power to turn on, and it invites you to be creative and, not at least, create some music wherever you are.
Lemondrop makes me happy as a creative person, and I'll bet it will make other people happy, too.

This is NOT a paid promotion in any way, it is just me being infatuated. It is a great feeling. Try it!

In this video I demonstrate most of its functions, I use together with Roland U-110, with Korg SQ-1, DigDugDIY Purple Rain, the lowfi sampler and compressor, with PO-14 Sub, and give you and overview of how it is modulated using its special modulation sequencer, that can contain as many as 31 steps and with varied step length. Also, I cover the filter section, there are two, the LFOs, also two, and the FX section, which sports reverb, delay, chorus, flanger, phaser, and a distortion.

I demonstrate its audio input and how it is used together with midi.

Enjoy!
Cheers!"

1988's Roland U-110 Meets Lemondrop in 2022 | Hearing is Believing | Choir of Dover

video upload by Axis of Wold

"Hi, this is a taster for what to come.
More Lemondrop, because it works so well with everything (I guess...).
It has a price tag, but when it makes music creation so fun and efficient and yields such good results, it is a keeper.

All well!"
