8/6/23 Roland SBX-80 plays its metronome and pings General Radio 1564-A + Univox ProVerb

video upload by Cfpp0

"The Roland SBX-80 does a lot—SMPTE, for one thing, but it gives you clock on TS, clock on DinSync, clock on MIDI, manual tap tempo, and so on. It was the master clock around here until Pamela’s New Workout took over. The SBX-80 looks like a 909, and has a cool numerical grid of buttons like the old keyboards (back when mice had wires). Here the SBX-80 is playing its metronome at a lugubrious 20bpm. SBX-80 metronome audio out to Univox ProVerb for some spring reverb. SBX-80 time base out to audio input on General Radio 1564-A Sound & Vibration Analyzer, with band level at 70 3mV, then 60 1mV, then 50 .3mV, with bandwidth at 1/10th octave, and frequency at 3.5, then 4, and back."

Roland SBX-80 and TB-303

images via this auction

"The Roland TB-303 Bass Line is a synthesizer with built-in sequencer manufactured by the Roland corporation in 1982 and 1983 that had a defining role in the development of contemporary electronic music. The TB-303 (named for "Transistor Bass") was originally marketed to guitarists for bass accompaniment while practicing alone. Production lasted approximately 18 months, resulting in only 10,000 units. It was not until the mid- to late-1980s that DJs and electronic musicians in Chicago found a use for the machine in the context of the newly developing house music genre. At the time they were very cheap, which helped to contribute to their popularity. The TB-303 is considered a collector's item today, often valued at US $1000 to $3000. An example recently sold on eBay for US $2,275.00. Phuture's "Acid Tracks" is widely acknowledged to have been the first Acid House recording to incorporate prototypical TB-303 sounds. Earlier recordings featuring the TB-303 can be traced back as far as the early Electro scene, including artists such as Ice T, Newcleus, and Mantronix, as well as pop musicians such as Heaven 17 and Section 25. In the early 90's, as new Acid styles emerged, the 303 was often overdriven, producing a harsher sound. Examples of this technique include Hardfloor's 1992 EP "Acperience", and Interlect 3000's 1993 EP "Volcano". The well-known "acid" sound is typically produced by playing a repeating note pattern on the TB-303, while altering the filter's cutoff frequency, resonance, and envelope modulation. The TB-303's accent control modifies a note's volume, filter resonance, and envelope modulation, allowing further variations in timbre. A distortion effect, either by using a guitar effects pedal or overdriving the input of an audio mixer, is commonly used to give the TB-303 a denser, noisier timbre--as the resulting sound is much richer in harmonics. The head designer of the TB-303, Tadao Kikumoto, was also responsible for leading design of the TR-909 drum machine. " No details on the SBX-80. If you know more, feel free to comment. via ni hao in the comments of this post.

Update via burstgenerator in the comments: "the SBX-80 was good for syncing sequencing hardware to tape machines via SMPTE that it would then translate into midi-clock or roland sync, etc. link"

Roland SBX-1000 sync box and midi sequencer

via @psilosamples

Anyone know where to find the system disk for an SBX-1000? I'm not seeing it on the Roland FTP site here.

This MySpace page mentions someone that did obtain a copy.

Below is a pic of what an original SBX-1000 looks like.

Also see the SBX-10 and SBX-80.

Roland TR-909 Drum Machine + SBX-80 Sync

via this auction

"Both are in exceptionally clean condition and work perfectly.

The SBX-80 is, in my opinion, the best sync box one can have for an analog studio. It has 2 DIN sync outs, 2 MIDI outs and even provides analog trigger for clocking a modular sequencer or something like an SH-101 or Pro One. It was designed by Roland to be the perfect "Father Time" of an analog studio."

Roland SBX-80 Sync Box and MSQ-700 Sequencer

via this auction
via the description:
"Roland SBX-80 Sync Box as well as a Roland MSQ-700. Terrific vintage relics from our musical past. The Sync Box offers many options for sending and receiving different beat sources. I purchased this piece originally to (DIN)sync a TR-808 and/or Roland CR-8000 Drum machines with a tap tempo. This also works well to tap tempo for arpeggiators inputs on any period synth (Jupiter 4, 6, 8, Juno-60, Korg Mono/Poly etc...). I am including a DIN/SYNC cable with this particular piece (looks like a MIDI cable but pin-configured differently). Also included is a Roland MSQ-700."

XBASE 888 (Digital-side), SH-101, CMU-800 demo by Jordan Passmore

Published on May 3, 2016 Jordan Passmore

"This demo is of the JoMoX XBASE 888 (utilizing solely the digital, sample-based side of the drum machine, rather than the analog voices), Roland SH-101 (doing the bassline), and Roland CMU-800 (with the arpeggio melody). The Mutable Instruments MIDIpal is sequencing the CMU and the Roland SH-101 is running off of it's own sequencer. A Roland SBX-80 is the master clock, sending MIDI clock to the XBASE and MIDIpal and triggers to the SH-101's trigger in. The mixer is a Roland M-16E and the only effect is the Boss DM-2w analog delay.

I uploaded my own samples into the XBASE 888; a mix of LinnDrum and Oberheim DMX samples. The XBASE has an 8-bit sample playback engine for 6 of it's voices and they can either be one of the stock 808/909ish samples or user uploads (via the JoMoX Win/OSX utility)."

Roland SBX-80 SYNC BOX

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Great sync box for making your vintage (and not so) drum boxes, rhythm machines, sequencers, samplers, keyboards, synths, midi sound modules, tape machines, etc. talk to one another.
Shows cosmetic wear, but overall in good shape. (The last image is a digital advert for informational purposes).

The unit appears to work well with the following exceptions — the light in the ‘start' / 'tap' does not light up, but the button works well; the ‘set sec’ button does light up, but the button does not work (may just need a good cleaning); the two smaller rubber feet on the bottom are old / feel sticky; unit is missing 1 rubber foot which has been replaced with felt foot. Unit is older, used, and sold as-is.

Includes power cable. (and yes, has the plastic battery holder inside with two healthy AAs included).
