The ARP 2600M Experience

"The Korg Arp 2600M is a "mini" version of the extremely classic Arp 2600 analog synthesizer. In this video I multitrack it to create 4 experiences that show off how it can sound. All sounds besides drums and noise risers are from the Arp. Keep reading for what's going on in each "experience"!

classic synthwave sounds. captured midi for each part in ableton and then recorded the audio while playing the panel controls. arp, bass, lead, noise lead, drums. used amp and cab simulation in ableton on some parts to give more space to the mix and add some grit.

fed a youtube video playing terence mckenna directly into the arp's preamp, then piped that to the ring modulator. the pre-amp signal also creates an envelope via the envelope follower that is used to adjust the filter cutoff. played around with a pass of just noise and effects, then added a repeating melodic line and a bubbling abstract arpeggio underneath.

the modwheel of your midi controller plugged into the arp can be used as a cv modulator for anything in the synth. i used it to do pitch-bends of specific oscillators to specific intervals, giving me a cool sort of duophonic slide lead thing. wanted to make a track that sounded like black moth super rainbow, but one the acapella dropped in it felt more like tabasco. I'm not complaining.

the arp can be used as a duophonic synthesizer, meaning you can play two separate notes at once through the same filter and vca section. if you tune the third oscillator to a pleasant interval, you can get nice chords. that and the arp are the basis of this track. the acid rain maestro provides complex modulation to the filter which i bring in and out."

"The ARP Odyssey is a classic monophonic / duophonic synthesizer. It came out 1972 and was the competitor of the Minimoog. It can be seen as a cutdown version of the ARP 2600 - although some features where added - the highpass filter and the oscillator synchronisation for example.
It has the best sync-lead-sounds I ever heard from a synthesizer! The Odyssey is a real classic - and it sounds classic!

The ARP has a lot of features, so it is very flexible: 2 oscillators (VCO 2 can be used as a second LFO), VCO synchronisation, 2 filters (resonant lowpass & non-resonant highpass), ring modulator, sample & hold, noise generator (white & pink noise), 1 LFO, 2 envelopes (ADSR and AR).

There were three versions of the Odyssey. In my video you see an ARP Odyssey MK III, which has the CV/gate jacks - and an external signal input.

The ARP Odyssey was used by many prominent musicians: Klaus Schulze, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Herbie Hancock, Gary Numan, Pink Floyd, ABBA, Chick Corea, Tony Banks (Genesis), the Carpenters...

Andy Whitmore started life as a top session keyboard player playing on over 50 hit records before turning his hand to music production. He went on to produce 14 top ten hits. He is a pro when it comes to synthesizers, and here explores the ARP Odyssey as part of a brand new series.
One of the most iconic synthesizers ever, Andy’s experience with this Arp classic dates back to the mid-‘90s, and he discusses the basics in his exploration of what makes the ARP Odyssey so great.

SEARCH /Broadcasting Tijuana Electronic Music to outer space

"Manglano-Ovalle transformed the bullfight ring of Tijuana located at the border in to a Radio telescope searching for "aliens". He suspended an antenna above the building and a receiving dish below, Live Electronic Music was brodcasted in the building, on the web, FM radio and into space. This project makes reference to the social situation of Mexican "Aliens".

In the video Pepe Mogt(Latinsizer, Fussible, Nortec), Ramon Bostich(nortec Collective) and Leslie(Dream addictive) were making music with digital and analog sequencers and synths(Arp Odyssey, Oberheim), the audio out of this machines was sent to Manglano-Ovalle Transmiter in real time in to outer space.

The ARP Odyssey was and still is a very popular synth because it is a powerful lightweight version of the awesome ARP 2600. It was also ARP's response to the Minimoog and the Odyssey became the most popular synth ARP ever sold! The Odyssey is a 2-oscillator analog synth (with duophonic capability) which sounds really nice; the Minimoog has 3 oscillators and is considered fatter. The Odyssey comes well equipped with all the tweakable features you'd expect: resonant low pass filter, ADSR envelopes, sine or square wave LFO and even a sample-and-hold function. It also added a few new features such as a highpass filter in series with the lowpass, oscillator sync capability and pulse width modulation. It is a very professional and expressive machine that can create nice analog basses, interesting leads and great effects and sweeping sounds or noises!

There were many versions of the Odyssey over the years, each a little different. Pictured above is the Odyssey I (Model 2800). These original white-faced Odysseys used a tinny 2-pole VCF filter design (Model 4023) similar to old Oberheim SEM modules. They also used a rotary knob for pitch bending. These models were produced between 1972-74. Odysseys have been used by ABBA, Bomb The Bass, Ultravox, Gary Numan, LTJ Bukem, Air, Tangerine Dream, 808 State, Apollo 440, Nine Inch Nails, Astral Projection, Chick Corea, George Duke, Josef Zawinul, John Foxx, Vangelis, Elton John, Latinsizer, Jethro Tull, Fussible, Nortec Collective, Jimmy Edgar, DEVO, R.E.M. and Herbie Hancock

TR-808
The TR-808 is a classic drum machine that used analog synthesis to create its sounds. The sounds have a very thin and pure quality and aren't grungy like it's successor the TR-909. In fact, the 808 has become the signature beatbox used in most R&B and hip-hop as well as a lot of dance and techno music. Booming bass kicks, crispy snares and that annoying cowbell sound made famous during the 80's are all part of the 808 and its famous sound.

Its 16 drum sounds include the famous boomy low kick, snappy snares, low/mid/hi toms, low/mid/hi congas, rimshot, claves, hand clap, maracas, cowbell, cymbal, open hihat, closed hihat and accent. All of the sounds can be edited and/or tuned and have individual outputs. Unfortunately it is not MIDI equipped but it does use Roland's DIN Sync.

The TR-808 was OK in its time. It just didn't sound like real drums. When the Linn Drum machines appeared, the 808 seemed doomed. But its unique sound and analog allure have found it a long-lasting home in many forms of music. Clearly the 808 has been one of the more important and famous drum machines in the history of music, spawning imitators (ReBirth, DrumStation) and band names (808 State). Famous users include Orbital, Uberzone, Download, Aphex Twin, 808 State, BT, Bomb The Bass, Sense Datum, The Prodigy, Josh Wink, Faithless, Skinny Puppy, Bushflange, Jimi Tenor, A Guy Called Gerald, Eat Static, Dr. Dre, Jimmy Edgar, Nortec Collective, Freddy Fresh, Richie Hawtin, Jean Michel Jarre, Cocteau Twins, Bostich, Marvin Gaye, Latinsizer, Luke Vibert, Ice Cube and Puff Daddy."

Arp 2600 with Tonus Logo & Keyboard

"Here's the chance you've been waiting for. For sale is an incredibly rare Arp 2600 synthesizer with the Tonus logo. What makes this Arp special over most of the ones you see is it has the superior sought after 4017 oscillators, said to be more stable than the later versions and also with a fatter analog tone. It also has the rare Moog Filter which Arp was later sued over [not true - threatened but not sued] and had to change the design [true]. The later design is said to be weaker and thinner sounding. This Moog filter is super creamy and buttery, very incredible sound. The synth is 100% fully functional, recently tuned/calibrated and gone over, all sliders are clean and jacks are working and power supply board has been recapped. The keyboard keys all trigger properly, and has an upgraded connector jack that isn't as flimsy as the original connectors. Also upgraded is the power cable, it takes standard 3 prong instead of the proprietary oval shape. The only issue is 3 slider shafts are broken off, the slider still work but the shafts are shorter without the knob caps (which could be glued back on or replace the sliders entirely if desired). Cosmetically, the synth face looks very nice, crisp graphics and not much wear. The outside of the synth does show quite a bit of wear, especially on the lid covers. The lids for both keyboard and main unit are included but show a bit of peeling, so be sure to check out the pictures and make sure you like it. The cosmetics could easily be touched up with a retolexing if desired or you can appreciate the vintage character to it. The sound is the important part which is just really incredible and noticeably better than the other G-clef or black/orange 2600s I've played that didn't have the 4017 and Moog filters in them. I am open to offers but remember while your offer is pending someone else may snap this up. Don't miss out on this gem!"

Hopefully this video provides some context to its sound. I feel this will be a winner for Korg, well done! Great sound, neat size, this could be a monster of a machine.

This is going to be one doozy of a post, so bear with me. This post is a review of the year in synths for 2013. We begin with Tributes to Those We Lost This Year, followed by New Manufacturers & Makers, Older Manufacturers Added to the Site, New Gear Announcements, Top 10 Posts by Traffic,  My Standout Posts for the Year, and finally This Years' Synth Events. I did my best to keep things as short and concise as possible.

New Manufacturers & Makers

Starting last January, I decided to keep a running list of every new manufacturer and maker introduced to the site during the year.  This is something I haven't done before and I thought it would be interesting to see how many there were in the year.   It's easy to focus on the big synth announcements throughout the year, but what about all the new makers and brands? I shouln't have to go considerably into the significance of new designers on the scene, so I'll just say two things regarding them.  One, the number of new makers is a direct reflection on the interest in our scene, and two, these are the creators of new gear which directly translate into new designs not previously available to us.  Think about that for a moment.  These are makers and designs that did not exist before.  They are part of our synth history.  So what is the total count of new synth designers for the year? A whopping 113. Think about that a bit. One hundred and thirteen new synth designers and brands this year alone.

Evenfall Mini Modular Designed by Grant Richter of Wiard

"I guess 50 (60?) of these were produced, either as kits or assembled products. I bought this to complete my own rack full of Grant Richter modules. It was a largely an impulse buy fueled by the tingly feelings my Wiard 300 modules give me. Make no mistake--this is NOT a Wiard module nor does it sound like one. It is not nearly as awe-inspiring overall, though it does have a few tricks that make it worth exploring. Definitely a cool piece of synthesizer history.

I found this to be, overall, one of those "sweet spot" machines, where nuanced wiggling can give you some really unique and impressive sounds. This is particularly true with the bandpass filter, which really sounds like Satan yelling about the weather while contending with a head cold. Very cool.

There are a few peculiar aspects to this, such as the weird gain staging. Any setting after 12 o'clock in the VCA will saturate/distort. Maybe you like this. I don't care for it personally. That's just the way these things work, as confirmed by several other owners, as well as Cary Grace, who currently builds all modules under the Wiard name, and who tours with an Evenfall Mini Modular (largely because it's small and light, I guess). This is a very lightweight synthesizer.

The pots are all mini pots, like attenuator pots on lots of modern Eurorack modules. I'm a bit of an oaf for these, but they're not difficult to work with.

I have not opened it to check internals or perform any mods. I'm not sure whether there are schematics floating around, but if you choose to go that route I'm sure you're an intrepid enough lad or lass to chase them down.

Cosmetically, there is some damage on the lower right edge of the panel; I have straightened this to the best of my ability.

The Evenfall Mini Modular Synthesizer is a rack mountable semi-modular analog synthesizer featuring the warm, organic sound of real analog circuitry and the flexibility of individual control knobs and a patch cord interface.
The Mini Modular also features internally "pre patched" or "normalized" connections among the modules. These connections make the Mini Modular a capable synthesizer even without inserting patch cords. These internal connections can be overridden by inserting 3.5mm patch cables as desired.
The Mini Modular can be patched to make sound by itself or in conjunction with another voltage-controlled synthesizer. It can also be controlled from a MIDI controller via the built-in MIDI to CV interface which provides pitch, velocity, gate, pitch bend, portamento on/off, and modulation output voltages.

This synth was designed by Grant Richter of Wiard synthesizers and there were roughly 60 sold, 30 in kit form and 30 assembled. The previous owner told me this is a factory-assembled unit.

Grant wrote this on the old Wiard Yahoo list:

It was originally slated to be the Wiard Model 3600, but I decided to pass on it because we could not find knobs to fit the little nubby pot shafts. They are just like TR-808 tuning pots. I feared the lack of knobs would limits sales too much.

Arturia announces the Synclavier V

Timbres consist of up to 12 Partial Timbres
Much of the magic of the original Synclavier owed to the ability to build Timbres (presets) by creating and layering four completely different sounds or Partial Timbres to realize massive, complex sounds. With the Synclavier V, we’ve taken the number of Partial Timbres to 12, dramatically expanding the creative possibilities. Since each Partial Timbre is a complete sound, that means that you can stack many different sonic elements into electrifying Timbres resounding with rich complex textures brimming with subtleties.

Partial Timbres are each compete synth engines
Each of the 12 Partial Timbres has two digital oscillators that combine the principles of both additive and frequency modulation (FM) synthesis. Rather than using filters to subtract harmonics from simple oscillators, additive synthesis builds up complex sounds by selectively adding harmonics in this case. The Synclavier V goes way beyond that, combining these oscillators in an FM architecture where the carrier (main) oscillator is modulated by the second harmonic oscillator. The fusion of additive and FM technologies make for a stunningly diverse and unique universe of cinematic pads, epic leads, evolving bass lines and more.

Time Slices animate long passages
Time Slices allow you to specify up to 50 snapshots of the 12 Partial Timbres of additive and FM synthesis goodness, and animate through them over time. For each Time Slice, you can set the volume, pitch, FM modulation amount, and delay. The ability to set parameter crossfades of up to 30 seconds between Time Slices—over a total time of 5 minutes—makes it possible to create long evolving ambient pads and cinematic cues of incredible complexity.

Improvements make a great instrument even greater
We’ve made a lot more improvements beyond boosting the sound engine from four Partial Timbres to 12. Where the original modulation oscillator was only a sine wave, now you can also choose sawtooth, square, or triangle—or graphically build your own waves comprised of 24 phase-controllable harmonics. These enhancements allow you to create outrageous textures never possible before. Each Time Slice can now even have a separate FM modulator waveform. Variable bit depth between 4- and 24-bits, on-board effects, and a MIDI Learn feature are just some of the many examples of the new options available to you in Synclavier V.

With the Synclavier V, digital synthesis meets total creative and performance expression.
Sure, all synths have LFOs, but the vibrato section of the Synclavier V is exhaustive, giving you control over LFO attack, phase, quantizing, bias and more. Things get even more interesting when you apply the LFO to the FM harmonic oscillator that, in turn, modulates the carrier. Let that sink in for a minute!

Want to take your listeners on an animated journey? Add extra energy to your pads and soundscapes with the stereo modulation section. It actually takes the form of separate linkable tremolos for each channel, making for unique spatial animation effects that will have everybody’s heads spinning.

Imagine performing with expressive nuances never possible before. Press harder on the keyboard to change the amount of FM modulation. Ride the expression pedal to affect the frame speed of your Time Slices. Grab the mod wheel to rock the FM modulation ratio. Thirties-developed tonewheel technology originally made that special sound happen. An electronic current is created when rotating a metal tonewheel near an electromagnetic pickup and amplifying that signal. The B-3 has 91 of those tonewheels with each key connected to a fixed set of tonewheel outputs. Drawbar settings control how these are mixed together. The tube preamplifier subsequently shapes the sound a little further — filtering and distortion take hold here — while factoring the position of the expression pedal. This not only acts as a volume control but also affects the frequency response of the preamp which is connected to a speaker.

Plug-in support for all major formats inside any DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) with easy MIDI-learn functionality provides hands-on control of many of its parameters and automation support for considerable creative control. Naturally, Native Instruments’ new NKS® (NATIVE KONTROL STANDARD) — allowing advanced integration with third-party software instruments — is there for the taking.

As always, recreating an instrument in software provided an opportunity to add a number of more advanced features fit for the 21st Century. Cue the special USER WAVE position, allowing anyone to create an additive waveform. Why not use the ToneDraw feature to create a new waveshape based on the graphical look of the sliders? Having modelled the original built-in spring reverb, Arturia added other reverb IRs (Impulse Responses). Reorder the additional ANALOG DELAY, CHORUS, FLANGER, OVERDRIVE, and PHASER effects. Easily-accessible individual voice tuning, PARA (paraphonic) and POLY (polyphonic) modes, ATTACK and RELEASE envelopes for upper and lower keyboards, BASS WAVE (waveform selector), TONE control for bass section, TREMOLO SYNC, and REPEAT SYNC round out this all-new Analog Classic. Hearing is believing. So is seeing, thanks to the resizable (Retina/4K-compatible) GUI (Graphical User Interface) that’s as easy on the eye as it is to use.
