Alessandro Cortini's SONOIO Released - Buchla Goodness

Alessandro Cortini's SONOIO is now available on sonoio.org. If you haven't previously checked out the four promo tracks on site, do it now. What you will be listening to was all written on the Buchla 200 and 200e. All tracks primarily feature the Buchla with Jomox Xbase 09 for some of the drums. The full release features nine tracks. The following are the tracks and the synths used for each. Note tracks 1, 3, and 6 are 100% Buchla 200, and track 9 is 100% 200e.

1 Just me - 200
2 Suck up everything - 200, Ultrabeat, 200e
3 Not worth remembering - 200
4 Silence - 200, 200e
5 Heartbeat - 200, Jomox, Bass (electric), Reaktor Weedwacker ensemble
6 Hold on - let go - 200
7 Memory loss - Sepakerphone, NI Massive, Buchla 200e
8 Houdini - 200e , NI Massive
9 Happy - 200e

This is a great album on first listen and only gets better over time. The fact that it's primarily all Buchla only makes it better, as not only can you appreciate the tracks from a musical perspective, but you can really focus in on some of what the Buchla is capable of. This is essentially all Buchla in a modern rock recording. Buchla Rock and Roll (you might remember that one from Alessandro's NIN days. It's also worth noting Alessandro Cortini recently perfomed with Don Buchla at the San Fransisco Electronic Music Festival (SFEMF). SONOIO has been added to the Synth CDs post.

Available on http://www.sonoio.org/ you will also find the SuONOIO, available with a digital download of the album for $159.99. Note the extra "u". The SuONOIO is hardware. What does it mean and what exactly is it? From the site:

"SuONOIO (italian , suono io = i make sound)
# Alessandro Cortini and Scott Jaeger (The Harvestman) have collaborated to create a fully functional, highly featured and fun synthesizer called the SuONOIO. The SuONOIO utilizes sounds found on the SONOIO album and allows you to reshape them into new sounds, rhythms, textures and drones!
# The SuONOIO is highly portable thanks to its battery powered operation and built-in speaker. In addition to the immediate feedback of the built-in speaker, SuONOIO features a 1/4" output that makes it easy to be integrated with your favorite pedals, processors, amplifiers and more. Multiple SuONOIOs can be patched together if you decide to become a shut in or a professional concert SuONOIO-ist."

The following are a couple of teaser videos featuring an original Buchla 200.

Everything Ends Here (Alessandro Cortini) // Eurorack, Rings, Mangrove, Bermuda, Plaits, Hermod

Published on Apr 9, 2018 Lost For Words

"I love the video of Alessandro Cortini, who wrote this track, and Don Buchla (modular father) playing this live. See link below. A simple 3 part melody loop with great feeling. I hope I did it a little justice.

In my take on the piece, played on a Keystep and recorded and sequenced by Hermod, Rings goes to ZVEX Instant LoFi Junky. Mangrove and Bermuda play the other two pieces. I use the Erica Polivoks filter and the Ripples filter to bring in distortion with a careful resonance/cutoff balance. Mangrove goes to Ripples then to Pico DSP for additional distortion and crunchiness.

Some sound effects from Plaits are bounced around in the Tapographic Delay.

Recorded to cassette. Mastered with Ozone etc. in Reaper.

Cortini and Buchla :"

IDOW Extended Interview #10: Trent Reznor & Alessandro Cortini, NIN

IDOW Extended Interview #10: Trent Reznor & Alessandro Cortini, Nine Inch Nails from I Dream Of Wires on Vimeo.

"I DREAM OF WIRES is an independent documentary exploring the history, demise and resurgence of the ultimate electronic music machine, the MODULAR SYNTHESIZER. A special edition, 4-hour extended cut is available to order now on DVD and BluRay from http://idreamofwires.org. The feature-length, theatrical cut is set to premiere spring 2014.

-- IDOW Extended Interview #10: Trent Reznor & Alessandro Cortini, Nine Inch Nails --

In January 2012, the I Dream of Wires team visited the Hollywood studio of Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, for a joint interview with fellow NIN member, Alessandro Cortini. Through his continued interest and adoption of cutting-edge electronic instrumentation, Reznor's been witness to the evolution of the synthesizer, from the giant unobtainium of '70s modulars, to the digital "how's the piano sound?" ROMplers of the '80s, right through to the current dominance of computer-based plug-in synthesizers. In our interview, Reznor expresses his enthusiasm for the recent wave of boutique modular synthesizer manufacturers, for having "brought a lot of that magic back into the synth world, that got lost in the Korgs and the Yamahas and the Rolands…." Additionally, Reznor and Cortini offer insight into the influence of an instrument's physical presence, and how for both of them, the process of interacting with hardware plays a crucial role in the resulting sound.

Wrangler Sparked: Modular Remix Project

"Wrangler Sparked: Modular Remix Project

(Modular remixes by Daniel Miller, Chris Carter, Alessandro Cortini & more. Including David Burraston Mus IIC remix on the Hinton Muisc Lab!). Release date: 24/6/2016

Limted 750 copies double vinyl LP + CD"

"Wrangler’s new remix album features 11 modular synthesizer re-workings of tracks from their 2014 debut album, LA Spark.

Featuring remixes by the likes of Mute founder & The Normal’s Daniel Miller, Chris Carter from Chris & Cosey, Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) and Scanner, all the artists were sent the same original proposal by Wrangler at the start of the project: ‘Wrangler would like to ask you to submit an experimental piece of music for inclusion on an album entitled Modular Remix. The idea is very simple. We provide some basic stems from a track selected by you from our debut album LA Spark and you add whatever sounds you like - the only rule being that you use just one analog modular synthesiser system of your choice. We've approached you because we admire your passion and commitment to electronic music, and we hope you will be interested in taking part.’

The result is an album which flows across four sides of vinyl, from the locked down electro-dancefloor rhythm of Daniel Miller’s ‘Theme From Wrangler’, through the darker, brutalist shapes of Chris Carter’s eight minute ‘Lava Land’ opus and into schizo-synth pop (Dean Honer – I Monster, Eccentronic Research Council), abstract ambient beauty (Alessandro Cortini), dark dub (Solvent) and finally the brooding 14 minute masterpiece of Wrangler’s own remix, ‘Theme Meme’.

01 - Abul Mogard - Mus IIC

02 - Daniel Miller - Theme From Wrangler
03 - Steve Moore - Harder

04 - Scanner - LA Spark

05 - Chris Carter - Lava Land

06 - Dean Honer - Space Ace

07 - Alessandro Cortini - Modern World
08 - Benge - Peace & Love

09 - Solvent - Harder

10 - David Burraston - Mus IIC

11 – Wrangler - Theme Meme"

Alessandro Cortini + MATTHS Rig Tour

video upload by sonicstate

"Alessandro Cortini played a rare UK gig last weekend, and regular Sonic TALK panelist Matt Hodson AKA MATTHS was booked in the support slot.

We figured it was a great opportunity to have them talk about their gear selection and approach to the performance.

Alessandro opted for something minimal to support his completely improvised approach, with two Make Noise Strega (these were designed in conjunction with Alessandro) and two 0-CTRL - sequencer/CV controllers, Strymon Blue Sky and Volante all into an Allen and Heath Zone 96 DJ mixer, the laptop runs Resolume visuals for the show.

http://cortini.bandcamp.com

Matths has a different approach basing his set around pre writtern material and re-voicing larger modular rig, with the Knobula Poly Cinematic for chords, 1010music Bit Box for triggering CV and gates, the Expert Sleepers ES-9 running from the laptop for triggers from Bitwig, the Soma Pulsar-23, Beatstep

Matt uses an analogue parallel compression path to give the stereo feed to front of house a more consistent polished sound.

Three One Synth Releases From Important Records - Alessandro Cortini (Buchla), Eliane Radique (ARP 2500), & ELEH (Serge)

Important Records wrote in to let us know they have three new releases showcasing one synth each.   Alessandro Cortini's "Forse2" was made entirely on the original Buchla Music Easel, Eliane Radique's Adnos I-III was composed with an ARP 2500, and ELEH features an 8 panel Serge modular wynthesizer.
Full details and links:

"-Alessandro Cortini’s “Forse 2” is now available. Made entirely on an original Buchla Music Easel, just like 'Forse 1' but with an entirely different mood to it.

This is a 2xLP and the second in a series of 3 releases we have planned with Alessandro. Hopefully the CD Box will be out early next year. A cassette for our sister label Cassauna is in the works too for his Synthi A explorations.

Strega Musica by Make Noise Music

"Strega Musica is intended to be a free compilation— a gift from Make Noise and a celebration of Strega. All artists on the collection have already been compensated.

"Strega Musica" is a collection of music created with Strega, an instrument designed in close collaboration between Make Noise founder Tony Rolando and Alessandro Cortini. Thoughts on the collection from Strega's co-designers can be found below:

"It’s quite inspiring when people connect with your output and your works, making them theirs, finding their own emotional color in them. It’s truly magic and I will never stop being thankful for it.

Creating an instrument that reflects your idea for a vessel of compositional creativity, and seeing it stimulate other people’s creative output, has to be in a complete different level, and I couldn’t have been caught more off guard by it.

Hearing what people all over the world have made with Strega is invigorating and overwhelming!

If all that wasn’t enough, I’m here to present you a compilation of pieces composed on the Strega by some of our favorite musicians and friends: it’s really great to see how each of them was able to make the instrument their own, and speak their own language through the grammar that is Strega.

May you find your own language through it as well... happy exploring!”

- Alessandro Cortini

"As a listener, I am forever seeking music that has the ability to put me into an alternate space. Sounds that let me travel fluidly through time, forward or backward. I'm not usually looking to be in the now while I listen, as I must be in the now for most other parts of my life.

As an instrument designer, it makes me happy when people find a process, a patch program that creates a sound I'd not known was possible with the instrument. If that sound connects on an emotional level and takes me away from the now, the listener in me is also elated.

As a musician, I'm looking for an instrument that wants to connect with me and travel. Searching out a future I wish to know, or a past time I've lived. Maybe a moment I never thought about until I played that instrument on that day.

It doesn't matter if the sound is complex and never before heard, or simple and universally heard for decades.

As a listener, I traveled fluidly through time as Strega Musica played.

As an instrument designer, I was surprised by the sounds these artists achieved.
As a musician, the Strega sparked in me an energy I've not felt in a decade.”

- Tony Rolando, founder Make Noise
