Bananalogue Serge VCS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Bananalogue Serge VCS Synth Module For FracRack or Blacet Style Mounting Rack. Getting hard to find these in FracRack format. Same rack format as Blacet, Paia and several others, but comes with a Blacet style power connector. Could be changed over if needed.

The Serge VCS module released in from bananalogue.com is an extremely versatile control voltage generator and audio source. In the early 1970s, Serge Tcherepnin developed the Positive Slew and Negative Slew modules for the original Serge synthesizer. In time these merged into the classic Dual Universal Slope Generator. The Bananalogue VCS is an adaptation of Serge's original circuit with a few new features.

The VCS is a unity gain voltage follower. The rising and falling slopes are independently and jointly voltage controllable over a wide range.

VC Transient Envelope Generator

A pulse at the trigger input will start the envelope, or a gate input will sustain the level and the envelope will fall when the gate goes low. Rise and fall are independently and jointly voltage controllable, with variable linear and exponential wave shapes.

VC Portamento

Voltage is slewed according to the rise and fall times.

VC LFO

When the cycle switch is thrown, the trigger input is connected internally to the end trigger output, creating a VC clock with variable waveform and independent rise and fall times.

VC Oscillator

While not as wide ranged, or accurate as a dedicated oscillator module, the VCS is still an excellent audio source. The Exp CV input is scaled approximately to the 1v/oct standard. The Output wave can be swept from triangle to saw with linear and non-linear waveforms. End Out also produces a pulse waveform.

VC Non-Linear Audio Processor (Low-Pass Gate)

If an audio rate signal is slewed, the module responds like a VCF, and a rough VCA. The signal is low-pass filtered down to silence, similar to a low-pass gate.

Envelope Follower

Positive and negative peak detection envelope follower.

VC Pulse Delay

Trigger input starts the envelope and a trigger will be produced again at the End Out when the envelope completes its cycle.

Sub-Harmonic Generator

If a series of triggers are applied to the VCS faster than the total rise and fall times, the module will divide the incoming signal by a whole number. In the audio range the output will be the sub-harmonic series."

Serge Tcherepnin Coming Back to Modular with Tiptop Audio

Serge Tcherepnin, the man behind the original Serge Modular Music Systems from the 1970s is back at the drawing board with Tiptop Audio.  This is HUGE news.  Another legend of synthesizer history has returned. Note the newer Serge Modular systems are from Rex Probe's Sound Transform Systems. Serge Tcherepnin will be working with Tiptop Audio on new designs.

Update: they will be working on bringing both the older designs to euro format as well as new designs modified to be used with Tiptop stackable cables in lieu of banana jack.  Note older designs including modifications have been available in multiple formats via other manufacturers including Ken Stone's CGS and Bananalogue.  A VCO and the noise source are in the works.  The noise source is actually the original Serge design (the copyright is for the new schematic), and can be used independently, or can used in conjunction with the SSG to create a random voltage generator. (see the comments below)

Some history on Serge Tcherepnin from Wikipedia:

"Serge Tcherepnin is the son of composer Aleksandr Nikolayevich Tcherepnin and grandson of composer Nikolai Nikolayevich Tcherepnin. His mother was Chinese pianist Lee Hsien Ming. He had his first instruction in harmony with Nadia Boulanger and studied from 1958 to 1963 at Harvard University with Leon Kirchner and Billy Jim Layton. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1960. In 1961 at the Darmstadt Vacation Courses he studied with Luigi Nono. He then studied in Europe with Pierre Boulez, Herbert Eimert, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Between 1966 and 1968 he worked at the studio for electronic music of the Cologne Hochschule für Musik. From 1968 he directed the electronic studio of New York University. Starting in 1970 he taught composition and electronic music at the School of Music-California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. He has been involved with the development of synthesizers such as the Serge Modular and founded the company Serge Modular Music Systems. After selling this company in 1986 he returned to France. He has composed works for tape and electronic instruments, multimedia works, chamber music, a Kaddish for speakers and chamber ensemble (1962, on a text of Allen Ginsberg) as well as pieces for saxophone and for piano."

Update 2 via Tiptop Audio on Muff's: "Ok fellows, I don't have any front panels to show you yet, but i can share some of the progress we've made on this project:

I have been talking to Serge for sometime now about making the Serge system in eurorack. It all started when I introduce him to our Stackcables, he loved it and said that very few people are aware of how shielded patchcords would enhance modules such as the Serge VCFs, VCAs, Ring Mod, which are already ultra low noise. He continued by saying that with shielded patchords, the modules will
attain studio quality performance. I guess that from that point it was obvious, we are going to start a new Serge system in the best format in town, eurocrack.

So this is how it's going to work, all modules will be:

1. Original Serge designs

2. Serge color coded jacks

3. Serge original fonts and graphics, work flow

Or in other words; the whole Serge experience.

Those who have/had a Serge know what i'm talking about.

For starters, we are looking at making the Smooth and Stepped Generator (SSG) with added randomization, the Dual Slope Generator (DUSG) and the Wilson Analog Delay (WAD).

The fact that we are going to design all these from scratch give us the option to add features, but it is totally up to Serge to decide that. It is going to be his system and his ideas.

On the WAD we are working directly with Dave Wilson and hopefully we could figure out how to implement it with available parts.

The whole thing takes a very long time; Serge is a busy man so please be patient. I'm sure it is going to be worth the wait. It's a great joy seeing Serge drawing schematics again, and I will do my best to make it available for all of us to use."

Serge Synthesizers Coming to Eurorack

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. http://sergesynthesizers.com/

via Bananalogue on Muff's: "im not giving any time table, but you will see "serge" brand euro rack modules and instrument pedals from me in the coming months. they are fully endorsed by serge tcherepnin himself, with royalties paid to him for his designs. good karma all around.

i will update the sergesynthesizers.com website when modules become available." Also some discussion on Muff's here. Note Banalogue currently produces the Serge VCS in eurorack format as well as Elby Designs. This will be a new Serge brand for the euro format. Also worth noting is there is no affiliation with the current Serge Transform Systems run by Rex Probe.

Bananalogue Serge WVX

images via this auction

"Awseome collection of wave folders in one compact Frac format module. Read all about it at the Bananaloge website here. Bananalogue makes some of the most well designed and higest quality modules available."

From the Searge site: "The WVX is based on the classic Wave Multiplier module designed by Serge Tcherepnin. Top and bottom sections of the unit are independent and transform an input wave in various ways. The effect is non-linear and useful on both audio and control voltage range wave forms, the most pronounced effect coming from low harmonic content waveforms like sine and triangle.

The top section has DC and AC coupled inputs that may be used alone or together. The signal from Out 1 of the top section adds odd overtones. Out 2 and 3 are from the Lockhart folder.

The bottom section is a full wave rectifier, transforming waves to positive voltage with even harmonics. Out 2 is a "squared" version of Out 1."

Note the Copyright print in the bottom shot. It includes Serge, Ken Stone and Seth Nemec.

"This is my build of the Bananalogue Serge VCS in MOTM format. This is an extremely quirky multifunction module that was originally designed by Serge Tcherepnin in the early 70's, resulting in the Dual Universal Slope Generator that is in Serge modulars. I always wanted one, having watched several friends with these synths program complex patches based on this module. When Bananalogue came out with this module in euro and frac format, I approached them about buying several of the pcb's so I could put them behind MOTM format panels, but was refused, as they were plannng on producing them in that format "soon". Some time passed, and apparently the plan was dashed, as they seem to be reorganizing, and selling off all their old stuff. I bought several pcb's from them, including 2 of these in MOTM format, and it was a pretty simple build once I figured out a panel layout."

"Here's the Pittsburgh ViLFO (voltage-influenced LFO). In this video the ViLFO is modulating the pitch of an Analogue Systems rs95e oscillator. The ViLFO is being modulated by a pair of Bananalogue Serge VCS modules. We're creating a three-way modulation loop with the ViLFO which can yield some really nice results."

Serge VCS

In via AH. Brandon Daniel just got a Searge VCS. Click here for a sample. He gave me the go ahead to post this. Thanks Brandon!

"My Bananalogue Serge VCS module arrived yesterday.

I don't have any real experience with actual Serge panels, so I can't
really compare it with a DSG, but the short impression is that this thing
rocks.

It seems most useful to me as a lin/log shaper or an LFO or EG with
lin/log shaping. I doubt I'll be using it as a simple slew much, it would
be a waste!

It's modulating the frequency of the model 15 osc and the lowpass/vca of a
doepfer lpg. All the various shapes of the modulation you're hearing are
coming in via external modulation of the slopes, and as you can hear it
happily heads into audio rates.

-Brandon"

Serge Plexiglass VCS

via this auction

"this is a very special Bananalogue Serge VCS module, only the second one we've made with a plexiglass front panel, and the first in the Frac Rack format. This module is based on the classic Serge DUSG module (possibly the single most flexible synth module ever created), you can find much more information about the module at our website.

This module is a special one-off Frac Rack VCS created with a translucent red plexi front panel, red indicator LED and red switch cap, with yellow laser engraved legends. Fits fine in a Blacet or PAIA brand Frac Rack and works great alongside Wiard/Blacet/PAIA/MetalBox/etc etc modules in this form factor. However, since the panel is plastic it is more prone to scratching and care MUST be taken when mounting the module not to tighten the mounting screws too tight or the panel could crack. I would actually recommend using some small rubber or plastic washers between the mouting screws and the actual module. When it's in the rack with the LED blinking away the module looks pretty neat!"
