Benjolin Light Synth 3

YouTube via bubagoo | November 07, 2010

"The sound in this video is all made using one my custom built synth that you can read about here. http://casperelectronics.com/finished...
The synth is made up of two complex analog oscillator/modulator/filter circuits, a light control circuit and a modified BOSS RSD 10 sample/echo module.
I've started playing with a cool feature of the RSD 10 which is that it can use external oscillators to control the playback rate of the echo and an external clock to trigger the echo repeats. I'm using a sequenced oscillator to melodically modulate the pitch of the echo of the other oscillators and I'm using the sequence clock to trigger the echo. its a cool sounding effect that gives a relatively normal sequence a bunch of cool quirks to play with."

"Playing with some gear on my workbench. A handful of unfinished modules with some new stuff in the works.
-center unit with the light is the benjolin light synth.
-the unit to the right of that is the new benjolin prototype.
-in front of that is some bread boarded interfacing circuitry.
-way in the back is the bread board prototype for a super duper rhythm brain.
-reverb via the alesis nanoverb."

Mini Modular Noise synth

YouTube Published on Jul 7, 2012 by bubagoo

"Here's Kate demo-ing my new synth. It's based on my new Mini Modular Noise Synth project which you can check out here:
http://casperelectronics.com/finished-pieces/mini-modular-noise-system/
The core circuit is a modular synth with a bunch of oscillators. I added an external audio processor and the total output is a ring modulated combination of the synth and any audio you plug into it."

Casperelectronics NOVA DRONE sound and light synth

YouTube Published on Jun 17, 2012 by bubagoo

"The Nova Drone is an open source, analog experimental sound and light synth from casperelectronics.
It it can be used to create effects ranging from slowly fading drones to chaotic harmonic sequences.
The Nova Drones offers 9 potentiometers, 9 switches, 6 oscillators, 3 oscillator sync inputs and an epic 15 voltage outputs as well as 3 high current outputs for controlling external LEDs. All of the ins and outs have been routed to a prototyping breadboard at the bottom of the unit which allows for liberal experimentation and development of custom circuits. The prototyping area is especially useful for syncing the oscillators of 2 or more Nova Drones together.

Arduino controlled casio keyboards and samplers

YouTube via bubagoo | November 20, 2010 | 2 likes, 0 dislikes

"In this video I'm controlling 2 casio SK1s, a casio SA-38 and 3 SAW voice memo recorders with an Arduino. I've wired a bunch of the pushbuttons on the different devices to the arduino and have written some simple code to sequence it all.
-The SA-38 is useful because it has a pushbutton for each drum voice. By interfacing this with the arduino I'm able to write and play drum patterns.
-Then I wired up the "one key play" buttons on the SK1s. The SK1 lets you record a sequence then play it back one note at a time every time you hit "one key play".
-Finally I wired up the "record" and "play" buttons on 3 little voice memo recorders. These record sound from the keyboards and play it back. They're pretty noisy but add some nice variety to the overall sound.
The whole project was pretty easy and is very flexible, especially if you're a savvy arduino programmer. Tutorial coming soon to Make magazine."

modular synth circuit bent sequencers

YouTube via bubagoo
"This video shows two casio keyboards, a drum toy, switch sequencer, mini modular synth and analog sequencer all linked together.

I built the modular synth and sequencer based on schematics from
http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/
If you want to get into building analog synth gear, but don't know where to start, go to this site!!! Super helpful, tons of info and he has lots of circuitboards for sale.

The switch sequencer is the blue box second from the left. This is the central brain for this whole operation. Schematics for this piece can be found on my website:
http://www.casperelectronics.com/fini...

This is used to trigger the drum toy (rehoused in the brown box to the left) and is also triggering the casio keyboards which are pretty quiet in this video. The switch sequencer is also outputing a clock pulse which is being fed to the analog sequencer which is controlling the analog synth. What you get is a link between circuit bent instruments and analog synth gear."

Benjolin Light Synth.AVI

YouTube via bubagoo — March 31, 2010 — For more info go here:
http://casperelectronics.com/finished...

This video is of the BenjolinLightSynth. I've been working on this piece for a few weeks. I just added a crazy modded sampler/echo unit. It's the BOSS RSD-10. I'm triggering echoes from the synth circuit and controling the pitch of the echo with oscillators from the synth. It's a crazy combination

This piece is built around the 2 Benjolin circuits, which is a complex, analog sound generator designed by engineer/artist/super star Rob Hordijk. I've made a bunch of modifications and added a 3 channel light globe.
The globe has three high intensity LED lights in it, RED, GREEN and BLUE.
I'm able to grab different signals from the circuit (not JUST the audio signal) and send them to the lights, so each color is fading and strobing in a different pattern.
The result is complex color mixing madness.

SK1 to modular synth

YouTube via bubagoo
"Sorry this isn't a very good video, but it shows a really cool module I'm working on. The drum beat is coming from a Casio SK1 keyboard. The Melody is coming from my modular synth. The opening shot is an external audio signal processor that I built on a bread board. I have since built this into a full module which I will post on my site as soon as I have time. I am feeding the drum beat from a casio SK1 keyboard into the circuit. The circuit is then outputting clock pulses triggered by input volume spikes. I am using these clock pulses to control the modular synthesizer. It's a pretty cool way of syncing up your synth to a drum beat."

analog synth and iPhone

YouTube Published on Jun 18, 2012 by bubagoo

"Running a simple beat sequencer on my iPhone (beatwave) into the new synth I'm building:
http://casperelectronics.com/finished-pieces/mini-modular-noise-system/
The magic trick is ring modulation! I have all the audio from the synth being ring modulated by the audio from my phone. This works really well with vocals and melodies too.
The basic effect is that there is only an audio signal when BOTH devices (iphone and synth) make sound... and the sounds are mixed in an interesting way. So basically you only hear the synth when the beat is playing.
More info on ring modulation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_modulation

For the techie folks out there, I'm using the AD633 analog multiplier chip for ring modding. Its obsolete but can still be found. Its super simple to use and functions really well.

Another cool trick I'm doing here is using a sample and hold circuit to modulate the pitch of the oscillators in the synth. The clock input to the S&H is coming from the beat, so the pitch changes somewhat in time.

The big knob on the left is a multi turn pot which controls the pitch of all of the oscillators in the synth at the same time."

Vintage drum brain tweaking

YouTube via bubagoo | September 12, 2010

"Experimenting with the awesome and obsolete LM8972 rhythm generator IC. I have two LM8972s and a CD4024 clock divider wired up. I'm using the divider to send a 1/2 speed clock to the second LM8972 and a 1/8 speed pulse is activating different drum sequences. Adding a second rhythm IC and divider adds LOTS of variety to the output."

NovaDrone v1.3

YouTube Published on Jul 15, 2012 by bubagoo

"This video is of TWO linked NovaDrones WITH REVERB. I don't normally add effects to my instruments for videos but it sounds so good that I couldn't resist. I'm currently looking into methods of building reverb into future models.
This is the third iteration of the NovaDrone I have designed over the past few months. One of the main developments over the last version is the addition of a link port which lets you plug multiple units together to share power and mix the audio to a single output.
The NovaDrone is an analog sound and light synthesizer. It is completely open source and hackable. I will be selling (as of august 2012) PCBs, kits and assembled units or you can just use the plans to build your own. More info here:
