Mission Control

YouTube via worldsfair. KORG MS20
"'Mission Control,' the first video off The Dandy Warhols' sixth full-length, ...Earth to the Dandy Warhols..., epitomizes what the band and the album are: innovative and smart, self-aware and informed, and with a strong -- but never generic -- pop sensibility.

Shot in grainy sepia tones in the Dandys' own Odditorium, the video, directed by Mike Bruce, finds the band in space, playing their instruments as they float in zero gravity, frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor singing authoritatively, transmitting the band's message to the world down from the Moon. It's clever and fun, playing both on historical events and future occurrences, totally stuck-in-your-head catchy, the perfect depiction of what the Dandy Warhols are.

In The KOMA Studio: Peter Holmström of The Dandy Warhols

Published on Apr 9, 2015 KOMA Elektronik

"Peter Holmström of The Dandy Warhols and Pete International Airport came by our studio last month while on tour to jam. He worked on some more drone and experimental sounds with our modular synthesizers and effects. While in the studio, he also told us about his process and approach to working on music with both guitar and synthesizers, combining both sounds."

Moog Music Launches Season Two Of Moog Sound Lab And A Partnership With SPIN.com

"November 21, 2011: Moog Music launches Season Two of Moog Sound Lab, a unique performance series giving artists the opportunity to experiment with various forms of synthesis and soundscaping. Season Two marks a partnership with music tastemaker, SPIN.com. SPIN will exclusively present one performance from each session.

Moog Sound Lab Season Two’s debut episode features a distinctive performance by Twin Shadow, who applies synthesis to organically re-invent his breakthrough songs “Castles In The Snow” and “Slow”. The on-line series is creatively engineered and filmed at Moog Music's factory in Asheville, North Carolina by Moog’s in-house multi-media production team.

Little Dragon, The Antlers, Ra Ra Riot, and Megafaun join Twin Shadow for the second season of Moog Sound Lab. Each band re-imagined two of their songs while experimenting in Moog's gear rich, black box studio space within its working factory. Combining artists' untethered creativity with access to the full catalog of Moog's handcrafted electronic musical instruments, Moog Sound Lab offers viewers a rare view of performances usually reserved for private rehearsals and experimentation that take place regularly at the Moog factory.

Viewers may watch one performance exclusively on SPIN.com and the other at moogsoundlab.com. The episodes will debut on the first and third Mondays of each month. Little Dragon's session will premier December 5th.

Season One of Moog Sound Lab featured Tegan and Sara, Phantogram, OK GO, Junip, Dorit Chrysler, and The Dandy Warhols, which can be viewed at moogsoundlab.com.

Matthew Sweet "Where You Get Love"

YouTube via PostModVid. Not the best quality video, but this is the best I could find on the tube. BTW, I can thank Matthew Sweet for my Clavia Nord Lead 1. I used to go see him perform live. My wife loved his music and asked what that red synth the band was playing all the leads with in every show. I said it's this new cool synth called the Clavia Nord Lead. She said I should get one and eventually talked me into it with some extra money that came in at just the right time. :)

BTW, Mathew Sweet has an ARP 2600 in the following video. Anyone know if it's his and if not who's it is?

Matthew Sweet "Sick of Myself"

YouTube via detour066. "This speaks for itself." Again not the best quality, but the best of the two I found.

Back to the Clavia Nord Lead (and the purpose of this post), it definitely has it's own character and it excels at lead sounds. All synths are obviously capable of a wide range of sounds including leads, but you have to wonder how much it's strength in it's character lead to the name of the synth.

If you know of other tracks featuring *that* Nord Lead sound feel free to share. Also feel free to comment on other specific synth lead sounds you think stand out in general. The MicroKORG detuned saw in various tracks, such as The Killers' Somebody Told Me comes to mind. I'd post the video but there's no embed code for it. Side note: every time I hear that track I hear bits of Midge Ure and early Robert Smith. Their new track Human sounds like Alphaville. Not much synth playing in the video but you can see their MicroKORG. I like bands that own, show and stick to their synths. Ladytron, and the Dandy Warhols with their KORG MS20s come to mind.
