DSMI - MIDI for the Nintendo DS

"So what is DSMI exactly?
DSMI consists of
* libdsmi
An open source library for DS homebrew development that makes it easy to write DS software that acts as a MIDI controller or MIDI client.

* DSMIDIWiFi Server
An application that runs on the computer and forwards the MIDI messages received via Wifi to MIDI applications.

* DS MIDI Keyboard acts as a MIDI keyboard, including pitch wheel / MIDI control adjustment by sliding the stylus vertically/horizonally.
o Kaos DS is an XY controller similar to the Kaoss pad. You can use the stylus or your fingers to adjust MIDI controls.
o Pulse DS turns the DS into a MIDI synthesizer that uses the DS's PSG (programmable sound generator) to produce Game-Boy-like sounds.

What do I need? In short, you need:
* A computer of some sort (OSX, Linux, Windows will do just fine)
* Either A wireless access point of some sort and a game that uses the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (needed only once)
* Or A DSerial
* A Nintendo DS, obviously
* DS homebrew hardware of some sort"

iPad MIDI Melodeon 2.0 Core MIDI Demo

Published on Oct 28, 2012 by tradlessons

"Here's a demo of upcoming version 2.0 of my MIDI Melodeon app for iPad with CoreMIDI support. Supports both B/C and D/G style layouts. The port from the old DSMI interface was trivial, took less than an hour. DSMI really isn't supported anymore so all future versions will be CoreMIDI based. I'll also be porting the Cyborg GCF three-row app to use CoreMIDI as well. Once I have a chance to test the new code on all the various iPad models, I'll submit the update to Apple."

Amos 1.2 Demo

YouTube via anythinghonest | February 20, 2011 |

"Amos is a reactive MIDI instrument. It sends MIDI notes to desktop software and outboard gear. Think MIDI wind-chimes crossed with a pinball machine.

This video shows some of the new features added to Amos 1.2. Independent MIDI channels per disc and a re-designed settings panel are the highlights."

"Amos is a reactive MIDI iPad instrument. It sends MIDI notes through a USB MIDI interface or over a wireless network to trigger sounds from software synths, MIDI-capable hardware or desktop DAWs like GarageBand, ProTools and Live...

In Amos's physics-simulated room, collisions between objects trigger MIDI notes. Up to three duration discs (half note, quarter note, eighth note) can be grabbed and thrown around the room. There are three 6-octave keyboards that can be configured via the Settings menu. When a disc strikes a keyboard key, it takes on that key‘s note value and emits that value for each collision until a new key is struck. Tilting the device controls the gravity in the room.

USB MIDI Requirements:
• iPad
• Apple iPad USB Camera Connection Kit
• Class-compliant USB MIDI interface

WiFi MIDI Requirements:
• A Mac, Linux, or Windows computer on the same WiFi network as your iPad
• A copy of the free DSMI Server running on your Mac, Linux, or Windows computer
• Some kind of MIDI capable desktop app (Garage Band, Pro Tools, Logic, Live, Sonar, etc.)

Network MIDI control with Pianist Pro

YouTube via MooCowMusic | November 11, 2010
"Coming in V1.8, Pianist Pro offers wireless MIDI control using the OSX "Network MIDI" driver. Simply enable Network MIDI within Pianist Pro, connect to it using the standard "Audio and MIDI Setup" utility on the Mac, and you will be provided with a new virtual MIDI port which can be access from any MIDI software. No installation. No wires. No problem!

For more information on Pianist Pro, check out our website at: http://moocowmusic.com"

Update: via MooCowMusic: "I thought you might be interested to see a video demonstration showing the direct and wireless connection of the iPad with the OSX Network MIDI drivers. Wireless MIDI control from the iPad has been possible for some time via OSC or DSMI, but both methods require some additional server setup, adding an extra layer of complexity. Now for the first time you can connect the iPad directly to your Mac via the built-in Network MIDI drivers. Latency is fantastic and the OSX Network MIDI driver offers a variety of configuration possibilities. Network MIDI functionality is included in the V1.8 update to Pianist Pro which will be available soon."

The press release:

"Erfurt, Germany, March 18th 2012

Audanika, developers of the iOS touchscreen instruments SoundPrism and SoundPrism Pro have today released a new version of their popular apps featuring new MIDI control features (Pro only) and support for the new gorgeous display of the new iPad. SoundPrism, which has already been downloaded by more than 500,000 musicians, producers and DJs lets users create pleasing music using a simple and beautiful interface without any prior knowledge of music theory.

With its new MIDI features SoundPrism Pro is now able to be used as a destination for other MIDI controllers which means its sound packs can be triggered by other iOS MIDI apps, or even external controllers like USB MIDI-keyboards. It is now even possible to route the MIDI information generated by SoundPrism Pro to iOS arpeggiators like StepPolyArp and back again into SoundPrism Pro. Furthermore SoundPrism Pro is now also compatible to the DSMI standard which lets it connect to Mac, Windows and even Linux systems.

To get a better idea of the amazing possibilities of SoundPrism Pro’s MIDI control features take a look at our YouTube video here.

Soundprism Pro can connect with your PC/Mac via a wireless network or USB MIDI using the iPad Camera Connection Kit. It is available for $7.99 (50% sale from $15.99 for a limited time) whilst the standard app is a free download.

MIDI Touch for iPad

"MIDI Touch is the ultimate MIDI controller - it allows you to create your own custom controllers by placing knobs, sliders and other controls onto the screen wherever you want.

Send MIDI over Wi-Fi with latency as low as 2-5ms, and now with iOS 4.2 you can connect compatible MIDI hardware devices directly to iPad for near-zero latency using the Camera Connection Kit.

Features:
★ Design & save your own MIDI controllers by dragging and dropping sliders, buttons and more where you want them to create personalised control surfaces
★ Native MIDI Device support - connect compatible devices via the Camera Connection Kit and your iPad becomes a proper MIDI control surface with almost zero latency
★ Excellent performance - measured latency over WiFi to a Mac: 2-5ms, over Camera Connection Kit: 1-2ms
★ Send messages over Wi-Fi with easy setup (Windows: requires the free software driver rtpMIDI (http://www.tobias-erichsen.de/rtpMIDI_configuration.html), alternatively use DSMI Server for Mac, Windows or Linux, also free)
★ Several different control types - Add sliders, knobs, buttons (momentary or latched), drum-pads, X-Y controllers, transport controls and preset-jump buttons
★ Easily change the settings of each control - CC number, note number, minimum & maximum range, size & label
★ Standard & neon control themes to skin controls
★ Multi touch - control multiple knobs/sliders etc at once
★ In-app brightness control allows dimming of the screen to very low levels for performance

★ Full screen mode to reduce distractions
★ Controls snap to each other to help create aligned layouts
★ More to come!

Pianist Pro V1.5 - Now with Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer support

Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer on Ebay

"Line 6 have recently made their API available for iOS developers to add support for their MIDI Mobilizer interface. We are pleased to announce that Pianist Pro will be the first application taking advantage of this, in a forthcoming V1.5 update.

Pianist Pro is the market-leading piano simulator for the iPad. Recommended by global media sources such as The New York Times and Rolling Stone Magazine, it was also recently used in a live performance by legendary band Squeeze on the Jimmy Fallon Show (NBC).

MIDI Mobilizer is currently the only hardware MIDI interface for the iOS platform, providing a pair of MIDI cables that can be plugged directly into external devices such as MIDI controller keyboards and modules, or a computer interface to control Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software such as Logic, Garageband or Cubase.

With our existing MIDI-via-OSC technology, Pianist Pro can already be used as a wireless master MIDI keyboard to control external soft or hard synths. MIDI Mobilizer now allows us to offer a robust wired alternative for live performance, together with bi-directional control enabling Pianist Pro to also act as a MIDI sound source or sequencer driven by an external hardware keyboard. Now you can record your song ideas on the road with nothing more than an iPad and portable MIDI keyboard, and then import those songs into your DAW via a Standard MIDI File when back at the studio.

We have put together a short video [above] showcasing a few examples of using Pianist Pro and MIDI, both with the new Line 6 interface, and with a wireless connection using OSC.

The V1.5 Pianist Pro update is currently "In review" at Apple and so we would expect it to go live within a couple of days. In addition to adding support for MIDI Mobilizer, it also adds wireless MIDI via DSMI, and optimized wireless MIDI via OSC.

MIDI Voice Controller for iPhone/iPod Touch

"Play synths by singing into your iPhone/iPod Touch!

Voice Control is a wireless MIDI controller that converts the pitch of your voice into signals for controlling MIDI devices networked to your computer.

HOW TO USE:
• Download a wireless MIDI interface such as DSMidiWifi (http://dsmi.tobw.net) and install on your computer.
• Launch Voice Control on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
• Connect your device’s MIDI stream to the synthesizers you want to control. For example, on a Mac use Audio MIDI Setup to connect your iPhone/iPod Touch to Garage Band or other MIDI units networked to your computer.

USB MIDI on the iPad

YouTube via MooCowMusic | November 01, 2010

"A demonstration of using the Pianist Pro with the Apple Camera Connection Kit as a USB MIDI interface. Plug in a MIDI sound module and control it from your iPad. Alternatively plug in a MIDI keyboard and use Pianist Pro as a simple MIDI recording studio.

Coming soon in Pianist Pro V1.8."

Some additional notes via Mark Terry of MooCowMusic:
"Since the iPad cannot provide power through this interface, only self-powered devices such as rack modules or larger keyboards can be directly connected. However, "Bus Powered" keyboards can be connected using a "Dual Power USB lead" which can be cheaply obtained from a variety of sources. These leads split data and power input and combine them into a single output, allowing you to plug the data input into the iPad, the power input into a powered USB hub, and the output into your keyboard.

Together with Wireless MIDI via OSC and DSMI, and MIDI Mobilizer (which provides standard MIDI connector output), MIDI via USB gives you yet another tool to connect your iPad with your favourite MIDI device.

USB MIDI is coming in Pianist Pro V1.8, which will be available later this month. It requires iOS4.2."
