Roland CR8000 Voice Mod Demo Part 1 of 2

YouTube via gumielectronic
"This is part one featuring the bass drum, snare drum, rim shot, and hand clap mods. I tried to demo all the individual voice mods here but ended up forgetting snare decay, rim tune via cymbal oscillators 5 & 6, and system noise. Full details on the modification at http://gumielectronic.net/cr8000/inde..."

Roland CR8000 Voice Mod Demo Part 2 of 2

"This is part two featuring the hi hat, cymbal, clave, conga, and tom mods. Again I forgot to twist a couple of knobs: hi hat and cymbal high pass filters (they're not that great), clave boost (I used the trigger pulsewidth knob instead), high conga tune (behaves the same as the low & mid congas, just pitched higher), and tom noise."

Roland CR8000 With Elby MIDI2SDS(X) Installed

" Testing the Elby MIDI to trigger modules after installing them into the CR8000 case."

Roland CR8000 & Elby MIDI2SDS(X) Test

"This was early in the Roland CR8000 modification process when I was testing the Elby MIDI2SDS(X) MIDI to trigger modules. The CR is being sequenced by a 1 bar MIDI loop in Live. I also tweaked the 'noise' and 'offset' VRs on the voice board a bit. Definitely needs more cowbell."

Roland CR8000 Modification Timelapse

"Several days of work on the CR8000 in a cold shop. My pipes froze that week. But with the price of micro-miniature SPST switches these days, who can afford to heat the house?"

Elby Designs AVR Synth 16 Review on modularsynth.ru

via Dimitry on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

"Yet another Elby Designs module reviewed: this time it is 16-bit version of well-known AVR Synth. It is available since 2005, but I didn't find any really detailed review, so I decided to translate my Russian article about DIY-kit, history of the instrument and some projects-successors."

"The AVRSYN project was started by Polish experimentalist Jaroslaw Ziembicki in the year 2002 as the experiment of making a complete synth on single chip. I’d like to say that slavic people are talented with low-level programming and can get 250% efficiency from obsolete technologies. Initially, the synthesizer was built around 16-bit Atmel AT90S8535 MCU. In 2005—2006 project was continued by Paul Maddox and Laurie Biddulph. Eventually, they developed the PCB, the program code was ported to modern ATMEGA16-8 and the comments were translated to English. At the same time, Biddulph started to sell synthesizer as the Elby Designs product that is still available today.

The project was developed to number of forks like 32-version made by Daniel Kruszina. His version has extended functionality, partial MIDI-control and even the wavetables. This version is also available at Elby Designs. In 2010, James Grahame with a few friends and also, supported by the original developers, made a completely new project, that is called MeeBlip..."

MPC Electronics MPC-1 with Elby Designs MIDI Retrofit-8

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The enigmatic MPC-1, called the British 808 by some, used by Depeche Mode, Thomas Dolby and others. I've owned this particular unit for well over 10 years now, but have finally given it the sorting out it deserves and since I have no room for the rather large beast, it's ready for a new home.

Like so many other vintage pieces, this suffered a nasty battery leak on the digital (sequencer) board, trashing it. I have completely removed the digital board (not that anyone would really miss the very limited sequencer it housed) and installed an Elby Designs MIDI Retrofit-8 ( formerly the MIDI2SDS) to give you MIDI control over the voices.

The Elby interface is very straightforward to program to your needs, lift the front panel of the MPC-1, hit the "Learn" button on the interface, and it's in omni learn mode - play the MIDI notes in sequence on the channel you want and it's set. I currently have it set to respond to channel 1and the first eight natural notes starting at C3. Bass is boomy, snare is brilliant, open and closed hats are fizzy, claps and cymbals (switchable from the MPC-1) are awesome, and Toms 3 & 4 do a great Simmons impersonation. For unknown reasons I haven't been able to figure out, Toms 1&2 will not trigger via MIDI - they trigger from the pads, but not MIDI. Otherwise, the noise for Tom 1 does not work. Those are the only real "issues". You may look into sorting that or not, but you still have Toms 3&4 working great.

Like so many of these, the pots are often wonky, specifically the voice level pots. This unit has wonkiness with just about all of the level pots, so forget about using the glorious mono output and use the indie outs! Included in the sale is a period-correct Yamaha KM802 mixer, so you have the ability to mix and pan the indie outs as you desire, and even get EQ on the first 2 inputs. The internal mixer was pretty noisy, so using an external is really the only way to go. I'm also including enough 1 meter long HOSA dual cables to hook you up."

Elby Design Interview on VICMOD

"The man behind Elby Designs is Laurie Biddulph. If you are interested in building synths from scratch Elby Design have heaps for you to choose from. If want to add to your euro modular system take a look at the Panther Series. If you want build a complete modular look at an ASM2. The list of things to build are huge. I took my soldering iron and PCB and chatted to Laurie."

Doug Lynner & Elby Designs Classic Mystery Serge in Eurorack

via Doug Lynner on Modular Grid:

"Here is the first glimpse at one of ten EuroSerge system configurations that I have created for Elby Designs. Their new EuroSerge is a full, classic Serge Analog Modular Synthesizer, including the entire catalog of first generation Serge modules in a truly modular format, reimagined for the 3u format. This configuration is based on my Mystery Serge, the first 'commercial' Serge. The configuration will give new adapters a well used system from which to explore their own configurations. Following I will be publishing systems of all sizes for a wide range of users. It has been my pleasure to work together on this with Serge Tcherepnin, and Laurie Biddulph and I hope that you enjoy this new opportunity to include official Serge designs in your 3u system.

Elby EuroSerge System - Sci-Fi Robot Sounds

video upload by NOISEBUG

"This feedback patch on the Elby Design Paperface Serge was made to create ever changing sci-fi robot sounds.

In the past, we offered these preconfigured 4mm banana format Elby systems. Now we have all the individual moduals availble for anyone wanting to build their own system.

The great thing about the EuroSerge format is that
You can build your own banana format system into
A preexisting eurorack case that you may have lying around.

Elby Euro-Serge 6U System

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Elby eurorack system using mostly Serge licensed replica modules (and a Doefper A-110-4!). All modules include banana jacks or have been slightly modified (i.e. not irreversbly; a single contact was moved on the jacks of the VCS, Chaotica, and A-110-4—connectors fit quite nice and snug) to permit banana jacks. Lightly used otherwise, most modules bought direct from Elby. Powered wooden case by Dutch Modular SynthLabs. This is a full complete system designed to exhibit the most functionally-dense, multidimensional Serge modules (which only banana jacks can really exploit—e.g. system can be programmed for the availability of seven different audio-rate VCOs) into the portable, travel-friendly 6U 2x84hp eurorack format. Also includes DIY 0V ground jack attached to power bus which allows interfacing with external equipment."

EDP GNAT with Elby Designs MIDI

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction
"It has had the elby designs midi retrofit installed - this has no impact on how the synth looks - the wasp interface simply becomes a midi input socket ! Elby designs are still operational and continue to provide really good support for upgrades to the midi interface O/S Correct power adaptor supplied (it has a strange 'mini jack' type socket) The synth itself is in great condition - the membrane keyboard works as well as I can imagine it ever has done! Some of the pots need a few crackly twists to clean the signal if they haven't been used for a few days but this would be very easy to fix. Also, the battery compartment cover is missing...

The sound itself is the real deal. The filter is exceptional. The LFO is unique - fastest speed really is FAST! All together this is a great sounding synth and can go from cutting solo lines to squelchy 303'esque basslines to full on SFX. I've written in the title 'analogue' - it's actually digital VCO with analogue filter."

Elby Designs - EuroSerge System

video upload by NOISEBUG

"This Elby Designs EuroSerge System is a small, compact Serge system in the eurorack format, but uses 4mm banana plugs! Based on the old paperface circuits, this modern take on the era keeps the sound quality in a much friendlier format.

Details on the Elby Designs Chaotica by Ian Fritz

This one in via Dimitry on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge. Modularsynth.ru has a post up here on the Elby Designs Chaotica.

"Ian Fritz is known as developer of electronic circuits which utilise the Chaos Theory. One of these circuits that is called Chaotica, can be purchased from Elby Designs as assembled Eurorack module Panther ED120 or as DIY kit. The Chaotica is a third-order chaotic system with extensive voltage control...

It’s hard to understand the way it works without oscilloscope, but mainly, Chaotica imitates the process that can be imagined as some kind of particle moving in a 3-dimensional space. Three variables, x, y and z keep the coordinates of this particle. oscilloscopeThere is also vectorized time variable that can be reset and can flow at various speed. After reset, this “particle” always appears at the same point and starts to move in complex elliptic trajectories. The full path is completely determined by system parameters and can by repeated, but if some of the parameters changes even slightly, the path can change almost unpredictable..."

Elby Designs - 1973 EuroSerge System

video upload by NOISEBUG

https://www.noisebug.net/products/elby-designs-1973-system

"The Elby Designs 1973 EuroSerge System is inspired by the early paperface era of Serge Modular, with a few new modules sprinkled in to add more functionality. The EuroSerge modules use 4mm banana jack plugs to give you an authentic Serge experience in the eurorack format. As some of you may know, patching with banana cables forces more possibilities in experimental routing and bleeding CV goodness, by allowing CV's to feedback into other modules where the banana cables are stacked into each other, creating an instrument that moves and breathes.

The Syntax Euro Bananas module adds more routing capabilities with the outside word and other banana or 3.5mm based gear. Being that the Euro Bananas modules is passive, meas you can rout CV or Audio in and out of the 1973 EuroSerge System with ease, making this system a plug and play well rounded instrument. Housed in the Doepfer A-100P6 case makes this system a portable suitcase that can be taken on gigs without any worries of damaging your system in transit.

The classic analog Serge sounds is very present in this system and begs for the user to experiment and create crazy textures, soundscapes, or even your classic analog sequenced based music, all routed out through balanced outputs, making the 1973 EuroSerge System a true studio piece.

1973 Serge Paperface Era Modules
- 1973 VCO x 2
- Ring Modulator
- 1973 VCF
- Envelope Generator
- VCA (Gate)
- Programmer / Sequencer
- Negative Slew
- Noise Source

New Additions
- Syntax Euro Bananas
- Universal Slope Generator
- Analog Shift Register
- Audio / CV Mixer

Elby EuroSerge vs Kilpatrick Format Synthesizer

video upload by NOISEBUG

Elby Designs PolyDAC Polyphonic MIDI - CV Converter

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Elby Designs PolyDAC 4-voice polyphonic MIDI-CV converter in very good condition. I purchased this unit a month ago and it is in like-new condition. There is a small locking piece missing from one side on the rear of the unit, however the unit still functions perfectly. Polyphonic mode, two different monophonic modes, 4 MIDI CC outputs as well as Pitchwheel, Modwheel, Aftertouch and Sustain outputs. Comes with brand new 15V power supply for use with US outlets.

I have pasted the manufacturer's description below for your convenience. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. Thanks!

This module not only gives you a four note Polyphonic mode, with selectable assign method. But gives you two more, versatile, monophonic modes. Effectivly replacing not one but four MIDI to CV converters in one easy to use 3U wide Module.

Poly Mode, this gives you Midi to CV conversion for 4 voices, each with its own note CV, Velocity CV and Gate, along with pitchwheel, modwheel, aftertouch, sustain and four user definable Midi CCs. A choice of Polymode allows note steal or note ignore for new notes once all 4 voices are in use. With note steal mode on you can also turn retrigger on or off, which will retrigger the gate for the new note.

Mono 1, this gives you a monophonic Midi to CV converter. The 4 voices all play the same note/gate allowing for some monster stacking of oscillators. A choice of retrigger mode and a 16 note deep note stack. Also with pitchwheel, modhweel, aftertouch, sustain and four usef definable Midi CCs. Again you have the option for retrigger or not.

Mono 2, gives you 4 channels of monophonic Midi to CV conversion. The 4 channels all being consecutive (eg, 4, 5, 6 and 7). In this mode voice 1 uses the pitchwheel, modwheel, aftertouch, sustain and four usef definable Midi CCs. Retrigger sets retrigger on or off for all four channels. Each channel has its own 16 note deep note stack.

Other features

Assignable CVs, so you can choose which MIDI CC's you wish to use to control your modular. By default they are CV-A = 74(Filter cutoff), CV-B = 7(Volume), CV-C = 5(Portamento time), CV-D = 2(breath controller)
The pitchwheel CV affects all 4 note CVs Via the bend range knob. However, If you plug a jack into the Pitch wheel CV socket the pitch CV is no longer applied.
The Modwheel socket is slightly different, Plugging in a standard mono jack will give you the Modwheel CV out.
But, if you plug in a stereo jack in, the TIP gives you the Modwheel CV, the RING then allows you to feed back into all 4 note CVs, allowing a single LFO/VCA to control modulation on all 4 voices.
The MIDI light flash with each Midi message it receives and understands, eg, note on/off will cause it to flash, Midi clock and Sysex will be ignored."

ASR Freez

Published on Jun 16, 2017 Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"A little experiment using the Elby Designs CGS734 Analog Shift Register running three oscillators, the Verbos Electronics Complex Oscillator, Endorphin es Furthrrr Generator Oscillator and Harvestman Hertz Donut Oscillator, the latter of which runs through the 2hp Freez, triggered by a Modcon Quad LFO. Intellijel Metropolis is making the melodies. Meanwhile two separate melodies lines flutter and appear from Hex Inverter Orbitals, also clocked by Metropolis - using Make Noise STO and Intellijel Dixie 2. Add a little reverb and a terrible iPhone film and you have it :-D"
