Toshio Iwai Videos and the origin of Electroplankton

Update3: Demo of SimTunes put up by thewhiteline: http://www.twofloorsrecords.com/uploaded

Update2: Via the comments of this post:
"Toshio Iwai also made a game back in 1996 for the PC called SimTunes
http://ns05.iamas.ac.jp/~iwai/ [Toshio Iwai's website]
If you google you'll find a demo to download"

Note the dates of the exhibits on his website. The piano piece was done in 1995.

Update1: Looks like the orders of the videos changed.
Click here for the one that mentions Electroplankton.
Click here for a crazy one that plays the piano via light.
Click here for the list including the Tenori-On and some interesting related videos.

Title link takes you videos of Toshio Iwai demoing his work including the Tenori-On and what he states to be the origin of his Electroplankton for the Nintendo DS. Make sure to check out the second video in entirety and listen carefully. You can hear him state, "these thoughts, um installations are kind of the origin of Electroplankton." It's amazing to see the interface and design on this scale. Brilliant stuff. Via the comments section of this post. Thanks to whoever took the time to post this.

Electroplankton Samplepack (free download)

Published on Apr 28, 2019 AA Battery

Spotted this one on discchord. Electroplankton was a musical game for the Nintendo DS.

"Download it for free from:
https://www.aabattery.de/stuff/Electr... [Update: link now works]
Fellow artist J46+2 asked me if I wanted to help him create a samplepack from Electroplankton sounds, the Nintendo DS music making "game" from 2005. And of course I wanted! So here we assembled 40+ WAV Samples, Loops and One Shots for you to grab and use anywhere.

Thanks again to "J46+2" (https://www.instagram.com/4orty6ixand...) and his label at bigpharmaeuropa.bandcamp.com for assembling and mastering our first pack!"

Doepfer & Electroplankton

YouTube via RanKirlian

"Having some fun with Nintendo DS, Kaoss Pad 3 and my custom Doepfer cabinet: Nintendo plays Electroplankton Lumiloop over the XP filter module while a Doepfer oscilator does first a drone and later a sort sequence through the Xtreme filter. The result gets some delay with kaoss pad 3 and then is recorded to minidisc. Video is a bit dark at the begining, sorry, facts of the improvisations..."

Electroplankton Trapy

via Nintendo

"Trace lines through the water. The plankton swim along the lines to create mysterious music.

Trapy plankton make sounds as they swim over graceful lines made up of linked triangles. The creatures follow the lines you trace along the water. There are six types of Trapy in all, each with a unique color and sound. All Trapy plankton produce different tones depending on the direction they swim. They produce the lowest-pitched sounds when they swim to the right and produce higher-pitched sounds as their path veers to the left."

via Andrew who notes: "Nintendo have just made Electroplankton available for download in the DSi Ware store. It's kind of wacky, though: They're only offering 5 of the plankton, and you have to buy each separately (for 200 points - or $2.00 each). I still have my original cartridge, but a downloadable version is appealing!"

That is a bit odd. Note you can still find the original on Ebay. Click here for a search on Electroplankton posts including video.

Microsia - molecular sounds

YouTube via salzmanufaktur
"Microsia is somewhat between a computer game and an instrument. Yep, it reminds a lil of Electroplankton but it works on its own way. Microsia has a couple of tone generators and some FX and they're all controlled by their own "molecules". It's a stunning piece of software design and it's big fun to play with!
You'll find it here: http://www.microsia.de/index.php"

Microsia - Colors

"Playing with one of Microsia's presets. I did some color grading in Vegas8, so these are not the real colors of the program."

A bit like electroplankton on steroids.

Elecktroplankton

I've been debating whether or not to get a Nintendo DS. After checking out the Electroplankton site, the debate is over. Electroplankton is from Toshio Iwai who also created the Tenori. Elecktroplankton is like a Nintendo DS theramin on steroids. Click through title link for the website with more info, sound and video. IGN has a good review as well.
