Ellatron Remote Visualizer

YouTube via OmenieSoftware. no audio.
"Ellatron Remote Visualizer is a new add-on for Ellatron 1.4 that runs exclusively on the Mac, and is currently in development. Ellatron Remote Visualizer is designed to hook up to the stage projection system, to make an iPhone-based performance more compelling for the audience. Ellatron Remote Visualizer connects over WiFi to Ellatron 1.4 and duplicates Ellatron's display on the Mac, and adds customizable, swirly, groovy, hyper-psychedelic backgrounds for that authentic Pink Floyd UFO Club 1967 oil wheel experience. Ellatron can be connected to a guitar radio transmitter for audio and to Ellatron Remote Visualizer over WiFi for video, to allow true rock star expeditions across the stage during performance.

Mellotron Classics : Space Oddity

YouTube via OmenieSoftware. Ellatron on omenie
"During Summer 2009 the 40th anniversary edition of Space Oddity was released, along with 8 original stems to support remixing. How could we possibly avoid that remix challenge?!

So, challenge accepted - here is one of the most influential Mellotron songs of all time - Rick Wakeman, no less - with his Wakemanness artfully removed by muting the track in Logic. And the Rolf Harrisisms of the Stylophone removed as well, but that was trickier as the Stylophone and lead guitar share a track. Mellotron and Stylophone were replaced by Ellatron's 'Mellostring' and 'Stellavibe' respectively, to give authentic Mellotron string and vibrato stylophone sounds.

Ellatron sits beautifully in the mix (even though the level is artificially lifted for emphasis), and the result is totally convincing, with no post-processing at all on the Ellatron tracks. There's no question Ellatron is an excellent performance instrument, particularly the new (not quite released!) Ellatron version 1.5 with 12 chord buttons - 16 songs, each with 12 chords allows a band to apply rich Tron sounds to a whole set, without having any musical talent whatsoever - if you can read a chord book you can program a whole set into Ellatron!"

Jordan Rudess presents Ellatron for Mellofest 2009

YouTube via OmenieSoftware
"Jordan Rudess is amazing - not only an incredibly talented musician, but extremely generous of spirit and of his time. Despite having a world tour coming up with Dream Theater in a few weeks, he found the time, along with musical collaborator and videographer Richard Lainhart, to put together this great video, which is both a special message to Mellofest 2009 and an emphatic approval of our Ellatron App for the iPhone. Personally, I am so thrilled to see him play Ellatron, and the way he manages to hold the iPhone and play chord pads and individual notes (and fingered chords) at the same time is an amazing feat of dexterity and balance.

Let me say here - thank you Jordan and Richard for putting this together, it was *VERY* well received by both the organizer of the festival and the crowd."

Diatonic triads on the Riekotron

YouTube via OmenieSoftware
"Ellatron version 1.2 is now submitted to the App Store, and the big introductions with this version are -
* Chord Mode - 8 programmable chords
* Fat keys - much improved playability when in chord mode via the single-octave keyboard
* Save/restore of settings and modes

Big improvements on every release, 22 voices, and groovy 1960s goodness - Ellatron remains the one must-own synth for the iPhone."

Ellatron via MIDI

flickr By Omenie

"Ellatron via MIDI

A small group of people will remember our first MIDI video about 10 months ago that needed a jailbroken iPhone. Well here is the real thing.

Filmed by iPod Touch, here are a few of the features of the Ella MIDI implementation - 3 voices at once (upper, lower and pads), all can be played concurrently if you have enough hands or somebody else around/on stage who can hit the pads. Programmable keyboard split for upper and lower, programmable chord pads if your keyboard supports it (and the Axiom 49 has 8 of them - mighty useful). Ella can be seen responding to controllers on the keyboard with on-screen information keeping you up to date, and controllers are used to change voices, volume, pitch, tone, reverb parameters, and level/pan for each of the upper, lower and pad instruments. Ellatron and the Lite Trons now all feature the same rich reverb unit first seen in M3000, and the MIDI Ellatron is going to hit the shops with a handful of the real Tron voices from M3000, albeit with the usual limitations - shorter loop times, major third sampling intervals etc. Mellotron purists, or indeed anyone who wants a real Tron will still want the M3000, but people who just want a handful of Tron sounds for occasionally spicing up a song will love the new Ella.

Plus the MIDI implementation is ultra-responsive, despite this being a debug build and having a dozen printfs per played note - printfs going over WiFi to the Mac, because you can't really printf with an attached dock accessory...

A bit more work to do on the user interface to de-stupid it (e.g. "What is" ... "This For?" on the left!), an upgrade to the saved/restored preferences file, and we will be ready to roll out for testing. If all goes well we should be good to go by early December."

Ellatron 1.3 first sighting

YouTube via OmenieSoftware
"Despite the 1.2 legend on the control panel, this is in fact the first build of the 1.3 feature set, including multiple chord banks - 16, which carry around with them Tape Frame settings - and a revamped set of tonewheel organs, which sound excellent."

Strawberry fields for Ella

YouTube via OmenieSoftware
"The challenge - can a ham-fisted non-pianist use Ellatron version 1.3's chord banks to recreate the most recognisable and iconic Mellotron tune of all time?

The answer would seem to be, yes!!!"

Ellatron 1.2, second sighting

"Again, captured straight off the simulator, this shows that we are in much better shape than yesterday, and clearly shows why the UI implementation needed to be changed. Previously the keyboard was physically realizable - 3 faces mutually set at 120 degrees in a 'Toblerone' shape, one with an F root, one with a C root, and one with the control panel - you just had to rotate in the right direction to get the thing you needed.

Now it's a bit Escher - there are 7 faces to the 'keyboard' now, but still at 120 degrees to each other, featuring fatC, fatF, thinC, thinF, Control Panel, Chord buttons (NOW WITH CHORDS!) and the 'wait for version 2 you impatient Ellaheads' Step Sequencer. Also notice that the big triangular buttons have gone, and now both displays are touch-sensitive - I was getting really confused by my own inconsistent user interface and figured Apple would never do that on a product, why should I?

A few bugs still in here, and I need to implement a few things yet -
* fat key overlays for 'blue touch' rendering
* fat keyboard layout (to support playing - that's important!)
* chord programming interface
* persistent options (i.e comes back where you left off)"

"Update - very nearly there. Now to implement the code associated with the chord panel - record, clear, keyboard shifter thing at the top right - and we will have Ellatron 1.2 ready for beta testing. Beta testing will be pretty simple for this version, we may have version 1.2 ready for the app store within just a few days."

Omenie Mellotronic M3000 Mellotron for iPad

via Ellatron

"And here is the wide world's first glimpse at the Mellotronics M3000 HD. Powered by Ellatron and stuffed with genuine Mellotronics, this is initially an iPad-exclusive baby brother to Streetly's amazing M4000 tape-replay instrument, with iPhone version to follow. Streetly have for the first time made their entire tape vault available under license, and the M3000 is stuffed with voices derived from the Mellotronics tape library - *EXACTLY* the same tapes that appear on all those Beatles, Genesis, King Crimson and Zombies records."

The M3000 is an uncannily accurate, beautiful-sounding and immensely playable instrument, packed with 13 huge, authentic voices from the Mellotronics tape vault. These are the same production tapes that featured on Strawberry Fields Forever, Nights in White Satin, Watcher of the Skies, Odessey and Oracle, and hundreds more timeless classics.

Ellatron 1.4 is in review

flickr by Omenie

full size

"Exciting, eh?

EllaCello - we heard that people just couldn't make our MelloStrings play notes that were low enough. A problem we understand round here, as we have bass guitars in Ellatron central. So EllaCello now becomes the proudest, bassest member of our tape frame family.

So StellaPhone - what's that all about? Well - have you ever thought "If only I had a Mellotron?" - what about - "If only I had a Stylophone AND a Mellotron - then I could play Space Oddity all on my own!". Madam, your wish is our command - say a big hi to StellaPhone!!!"
