"Stretch" with Judd Miller at Le Cafe 1986

Published on Feb 22, 2014 PatchmanMusic·17 videos

"Here is a wonderful performance from master studio synthesist and pioneering EVI wind controller player Judd Miller with the group "Stretch" recorded live in 1986 at Le Cafe in California. Wind controller players will appreciate the fact that Judd's Crumar EVI is pre-Midi!! It uses analog control voltage (CV) to control the attached Crumar EVI synth as well as the external Oberheim Xpander. A special guest in the audience is none other than EVI / EWI inventor Nyle Steiner! He is seen at 01:03:20 in the video.

Personnel:
Judd Miller - Crumar EVI / Oberheim Xpander
Art Rodriguez - Drums
Tom Kellock - Keyboards
Cliff Hugo - Bass

We hope you enjoy this rare glimpse into the early days of wind synthesis. If you want to read more about Judd Miller's amazing career in the studios and working on big budget movie soundtracks, visit:

Special thanks to our good friend Judd Miller for providing this video.

Enjoy!

Matt Traum - "Thinking Of Michael"

Published on Jan 13, 2013 PatchmanMusic·8 videos

"On this the 6th anniversary of the passing of the great Michael Brecker, I thought I would play a little improvised tribute dedicated to my friend and Sax/EWI icon- Michael Brecker. This is a little thing I was playing while thinking of him and what he did with the amazing Steiner EWI electronic wind instrument. He touched a LOT of people with his music and he was a wonderful human being too.

I am playing what I call a "Hyper-EVI Steinerphone". It's the exact same model Steinerphone EWI Michael Brecker played for many years in the mid to late 1980s with Steps Ahead and on various studio sessions. This model was the first EWI that Brecker played and he took the instrument to amazing heights. This horn was hand made by the great wind controller inventor Nyle Steiner. It is an EWI (woodwind type controller)- but I have modified it internally so it fingers like an EVI (brass type controller). The horn plays incredibly well- it's the Stradivarius of wind controllers. It is hooked up to a companion synth system also designed by Steiner. In this system are two Crumar EVI synth modules and a Steiner "wood and glue" formant filter unit (which is not used in this video). Only one Crumar module is heard in this video fed into an intelligent harmony processor with reverb, chorus, and delay. Amplification is via two Yamaha MS60s speakers running is stereo.

A little trivia on this system you see in this video: This is the actual synth unit that Doug Norwine played on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson with Melissa Manchester when she performed "La Vie En Rose" (you should be able to watch it on youtube).

Matt Traum - "James"

Published on Feb 2, 2013 PatchmanMusic·9 videos

"Matt Traum improvisation on Pat Metheny's classic "James".

I am playing the Steinerphone EWI on this. I thought I would play a little improvised version of Metheny's "James" harmonized ala Michael Brecker. This is a one-pass recording with no overdubs. The harmonizer is an Eventide Eclipse with a custom patch designed by myself being controlled in real time via foot switches.

EVI Serge by vgermuse

YouTube via matrixsynth. Sent my way via Todd Barton, aka vgermuse.
"The EVI 2000 analog synth module of the EVI 1000 is producing long sustained sine tones which are now and then sent through a Moogerfooger Ring Modulator. The EVI is triggering a patch in the Serge that is creating random pitches and drastic timbral shifts. Hope you enjoy."

Update: New video is up here.

Mark Steiner - Time Travel Wind Synth Sound Collection (incl. the Nyle Steiner Historical Patches)

video upload by Mark Steiner

"For the Holiday season I'm offering my Time Travel Collection (license to all my sound collections future and past). And this will include the new Nyle Steiner Historical Sound Collection. Sounds he sampled himself and used in Hollywood movie sessions and more.

The first 10 orders will also get a sound named after them. Cool or silly but fun for sure!

Cost during the holidays starting now is $250.

I'll very soon have a full list up. But it includes 100 or more sounds for EVI-NER, Lyricon 1 and 2, Arturia SEM V plugin, Moog Model D for iPad, and more...

Also around 30 to 50 sounds for Anyma Phi, Moog Sirin, Arturia MatrixBrute and Respiro (both for plugin and iPad/iPhone app)... A few of my Respiro sounds will also be free to anyone. I may do up to 100 of those but at least 50.

I am also preparing and will ongoing make new sample sounds for Logic and MainStage ($30 application for Mac). These include per-note sample instrument made from analog synths, rare and exotic modules/modular synths, tube synthesis, samples from vintage EVI and EWI modules and all kinds of things.

I would note, the Anyma Phi just had an update and added more oscillator types including multi-dimensionally morphing wave table oscillators that are frosty and glassy and sound unreal. This is one of the most amazing and diverse sounding instruments and made for wind synths. I'm dying over the sounds I continue to discover within. So 100% something to get if you have a chance. Analog in it sounds soooooo good, and then so much unreal digital and physical modeling... all mixable to 3 independently expressive layers. It's a technology creature of wonder. ---fully unpaid testimonial/bought my own unit :)

Anyone who has already bought any of my sounds can upgrade to this bundle during the holidays for $150.

More info coming soon. More videos of new sounds including the Nyle samples (including his Rapping from the EVI Concerto, his own trumpet playing sample instrument, and his own exotic flute sound he carved.)

Most of these are all ready now, the rest will electronically ship by Thanksgiving.

A few parts of this seem a bit odd. At times I like to keep unexpected things from sessions in the videos as they are unusual, interesting, funny, or whatever. This one had a few things rarely caught organically... some gibberish Tourette's that I don't understand a few times (from my brain injury I'm still climbing back from). I thought I'd never share that but it felt right tonight. So it's just a little something that is organic and personal. I was also just pretty out of it in some ways from being up so late, I'm usually this... um... gone lol. Anyway, an interesting little journal entry in a way.

Thank you so much, sincerely,

Mark"

Mark & Nyle Steiner - NuEVI from Berglund Instruments - Day One

Published on May 31, 2018 Mark Steiner

"Nyle Steiner, virtuoso and inventor of the EVI, day one with the NuEVI. Video of his first in-person impressions, testing and lots of playing. Nyle has given his full blessing to this great instrument's creation and has assisted as an official consultant.

It was a special and legendary experience to recently deliver to Nyle his own NuEVI... which came all the way from the brilliant programmer/designer/musician, Johan Berglund in Sweden.

We talked, tested and explored, and playing the instrument was so engaging, we kept getting distracted and just enjoyed the music... so there is a lot to see and hear. The date was 5/23/2018.

Thank you, Steve Anderson for starting the 'Save the EVI' movement and to Johan Berglund for creating this amazing instrument... the NuEVI."

My 1st NuEVI Demo - Mark Steiner

Published on May 23, 2018 Mark Steiner

"Berglund Instruments NuEVI demo with built in midi rotator. All sounds are digial instruments in Logic. Analog and modular demo soon to come. Endless thanks to Nyle Steiner, Johan Berglund, Steve Anderson, James Ingenito, and Robo Sax. For updates and to be on the waiting list, please email TheNuEVI@gmail.com. Please help us keep the EVI from becoming extinct by telling your trumpet player friends... and why not... even tuba, euphonium, French horn... or anyone who just wants to play one of the most amazing instruments to recently emerge on Earth."

Nyle Steiner_Michael Brecker_ Joel C. Peskin EWI Video

YouTube via ireedman. Note the YouTube video has Nyler instead of Nyle in the title.
"Performance video of EWI Prototype in 1987. Sweet 4 CP, composed by Joel C. Peskin, produced by Joel C. Peskin & Andy Muson. Nyle Steiner performs on EVI, Joel Peskin & Michael Brecker perform on EWI. Michael Brecker is also heard playing tenor sax in the opening sequence."

This is an obvious follow-up to the prior post directly below. I found it on Nyle Steiner's http://www.sparkbangbuzz.com. Do check the site out for more.

Note Nyle Steiner is the Steiner in Steiner-Parker Synthacon.

Serge Creature controlled by cardboard box

YouTube via JargMarbin.

video response to EVI Serge by vgermuse. Also see these.

"This is a cardboard box with a contact-mic ($1 piezo buzzer) controlling a Serge Creature. It's essentially the same patch I used on the previous video using the HSS2, except I have an oscillator controlling the VC GAIN at the begining to get a tighter sound. If you look closely you should see the brightness of the green light increase after a trigger pulse is received; since the decay of this oscillator is set long, it only can receive a trigger pulse once in a given interval (the first knob adjustment shortens it). Later in the vid voltage is removed from VC GAIN and the sound gets crazier."

Serge Creature controlled by audio from Hardware Software Synth 2 from Gijs Gieskes

"I realize it sounds really crazy, that's the point of this demonstration. I'm sure my neighbors hate me. The left channel is the sound of the Serge Creature (Sound Transform Systems). The right channel is the output from the Hardware Software Synth 2 (HSS2) (http://gieskes.nl). The audio input from the HSS2 is removed from the Creature several times begining at 2:39 to demonstrate the constant pitch of the oscillators without input from the HSS2. The audio output of the HSS2 is being piped into the Creature at the filter's TRIG input and AGC IN, and at the the oscillator's TRIG input. The Creature's black OUT jack is feeding back into the HSS2, which is making it's own sounds and applying effects to the incoming signal, before routing to an amplified mixer and coming back to the aforementioned connections on the Creature. The Creature's 1/4" output jack carries the signal you hear in the video."

NuEVI Feels Like - by Nyle Steiner and Mark Steiner

Published on Aug 5, 2018 Mark Steiner

"How does it feel to play the NuEVI?

For wait list and info, email: TheNuEVI@gmail.com.

NuEVI created by Johan Berglund of Berglund Instruments in Sweden.
EVI invented by Nyle Steiner.
Save the EVI movement successfully realized and driven by Steve Anderson.

Jason, my 12 year old son asked why we were doing such a strange thing in this video. I told him it was just a stunt. He said, quite seriously, "that's really not a stunt, Dad, that's just screwing around."

A little bit distorted by youtube compression, but not as badly as often can be for an isolated saw wave sound. Doing this video I did tests and learned that their compression doesn't distort a pulse width modulated square wave. And that both are far less distorted if you pan them at about 6% (or more but I did 6%) away from center. So happy find. Thank you for listening!

Setup: NuEVI midi to CV.OCD converter to Doepfer Slew on breath, controlling a Manhatten Analog - Nyle Steiner Synthesystem Filter, which is filtering a Pittsburgh Modular VCO, which goes through Valhalla Hall reverb. A journey of human to digital to analog through digital... all used to strengthen each other."

The Girl From Ipanema / 「イパネマの娘」 / Berglund Instruments - NuEVI with Modular Synthesizer

video by BANANA su

Berglund Instruments NuEVI demo
Main : Modular Synth controled NuEVI
Backing : Roland MC-101

"The Girl From Ipanema - イパネマの娘

・NuEVI/NuRAD IN端子
・Pitch CV OUT端子
・Breath CV OUT端子
・MIDI OUT端子

Googlish:

"The Girl From Ipanema --The Girl from Ipanema

Bossa Nova is fashionable !!!
Just by making the song selection Bossa Nova, you can transform yourself into a fashionable person ... !!!!!

My EVI is a CV model, but this time I tried to play it with a modular synth using the Eurorack CV module.

This CV module has
-NuEVI / NuRAD IN terminal
-Pitch CV OUT terminal
-Breath CV OUT terminal
-MIDI OUT terminal

NuEVI / RAD The MIDI terminal of is actually equipped with a breath and pitch CV output terminal (it seems that you should not call it MIDI if you install a signal other than the MIDI signal, but lol), and connect it to the IN terminal of the CV module. I'll use it.

I've been experimenting with this setting with the desire to get closer to John Swana's sound.
I used the GATE terminal to give it a moderate attack. "

Super Duduk Demo - Mark Steiner on NuEVI

Published on Jan 6, 2020 Mark Steiner

"Suonopuro Super Duduk sample instrument for Kontakt. Made for electronic wind instruments.

Purchase at SuonoPuro.net.

Incredibly well, multi-sampled duduk instrument. The best I have played, and I adore the duduk. Thank you, Gino for creating this!

Also, for info and waitlist on the physical midi controller/wind instrument that plays in this video, email TheNuEVI@gmail.com. It is the creation of Johan Berglund, based on Nyle Steiner's EVI.

There is also a woodwind fingered version of that instrument called the NuRAD, which is patterned by Nyle Steiner after the standard EWI he invented (the one in the video is based on trumpet fingering)."

NuEVI wireless playing SE-02 - new Gate Hold feature - Mark Steiner

Published on Aug 12, 2018 Mark Steiner

"Playing the SE-02 wirelessly and testing out new beta of Gate Hold mode on the NuEVI using standard resolution midi. It's the smoothest I have ever felt playing an analog unit via standard midi with breath control (with no analog slew on the end). So exploring ways to bring these types of tones in a more fluid way to others. This also smoothens any synth voice that doesn't need the attack tracked for effects or attack sound (like the bow attack of a violin).

You can do this on other wind synths manually by setting zero as though you are very slightly blowing when you really are not. This has been confirmed on the standard Steiner Midi EVI by Don Cagen with an Oberheim Xpander.

But you could also with EWI's that allow zero threshold changes (or those that don't if you ask secret agent, Ingo how).

As this doesn't work for all instruments, it's likely more for studio than live, which is why Johan has placed this feature easily switchable in the NuEVI. This approach was Johan's idea in the first place and it's truly amazing.

Also this video shows how to get smoother LFO by using XMod on the SE-02.

For NuEVI info and wait list: TheNuEVI@gmail.com

Once the update for the NuEVI is released, to turn on Gate Hold, hold the EVI like a doorknob, specifically touching the bottom 3 octave rollers and the canister button, and then tapping the pitch bend up sensor. To turn off... same except tap the pitch bend down sensor.

Some synths can do this, but it's absolutely smoother setting it up on the controller side instead of the synth or sound source side. At least to a large extent due to the fact that the controller will always send note changes via midi instantly, whether you are blowing yet or not."

EVI Serge by vgermuse Part 3

"at the request of many folks on and off line, I have put together a 6 minute piece using just the EVI1000/EWV2000 analog synth. This features sounds I created for my work with Anthony Braxton and the Northwest Creative Orchestra. Sometimes the sounds are sent through Moogerfooger Murf, Moogerfooger Ring Modulator, Boss RC-20 loop and some reverb. I recorded the track via the mixing board so things are pretty clean." Bio Instruments - String Filter & Crumar - Per Note Sample Sounds - Mark Steiner

video upload by Mark Steiner

"Demo of layered new sounds (and then brief solos) that are new additions to my Per Note Sample collection for wind synths.

1 of these is an 8 octave per note sample of Analog Saw Waves played through Nyle Steiner's string filter. Ah, and the VCO happens to be from a Steiner Synthesytem Module.

The other 6 are samples per note from a Crumar EVI.

All made for wind synth.

Played on Johan Berglund's wonderful NuEVI."
