Fairlight voicetracker, the usefullness of obsolete technology in modern day studio's

Published on Oct 25, 2013 karelpostthuis·58 videos

"A simple demo of the Fairlight voicetracker, built by Fairlight (the CMI makers).

It is a razorfast pitch recognition system and realtime pitch conversion unit that translates any pitch and timbre to control signals, both MIDI as CV Gate, totally ahead of it's time and superceded by nothing.

There is even a basic 2 vco synth in the unit.

I demo the functionality of the display, which in my case is done by the former monitor (that i modified) of my CMI series 3, that runs in color on vga now.."

Linn 9000 demonstration PWL sound after repairs

YouTube via karelpostthuis | January 22, 2011 |

"Just a simple video of my two Linn 9000 drum machines, demonstrating the sound and feel of it's sequencing and sampling capabilities.
You instantly feel it's a hitmaker, especially the sound and timing... MAGIC!
Sampling in a 9000 is an artform, you never know what you get, especially in the filter channels, instant depth and dynamic feel are fabulous.
Repair work was nerve wrecking but the result is beauty in it's purest form."

Fairlight CMI series 3 explained - Setting up voices + audio routing

YouTube Published on Jun 18, 2012 by karelpostthuis

"A simple explanatory video about the first setup for using the Fairlight CMI series 3.

Because there were no video's or other explanatory material about using this infernal machine i thought it would be helpful for newbie users.

The video covers the setup and loading sounds for playback and mixdown.
It also covers the configuration of the 24 channel router / mixer and assigning monophonic or polyphonic output busses.

At the end is a demo from an external sequencer (the magic Atari TT030 with Cubase 3.0 Atari) and the loading of a pre-programmed instrument line-up"

Repair work on a vintage SP12 Drum Sampler from E-MU systems by Karel Post

YouTube via karelpostthuis
"First movie of a set describing the repair of a SP12 in critical state of decay.
The unit suffers very much of corrosion caused by an unknown liquid that has entered the machine in the past.
Repair is mainly reducing the corrosion-resistance that causes functions to fail.

I hope the machine will function 100% again........"

Repairing an E-MU SP12 part 2 by Karel Post

"A detailed film about the repair and revival of the SP12. It turned out the unit had suffered a major fluid spill in the past ,oxydizing the integrated circuits and its sockets. The frontpanel of the unit had lots of rust and other oxydation as well as defective switches and LED's. The display however was fine fortunately..................

Part 1 is about the revival of the CPU part, this is the cleanup and repair of some user parts and switches."

Stock Aitken Waterman Sound, The Jason Donovan HITS, How did they do it!

YouTube via karelpostthuis | August 26, 2010

"As a sound engineer i'm always curious how records, and "sound-logo's" are built.
Anyone can make synth POP, but a HIT sound is made by specialists who know their stuff.

In a free afternoon i got into my studio to find out.. HOW the SAW / PWL sound of the late '80-s was made...

I used stuff they also had, like the Jupiter 8, the D50, a bunch of Juno's and the best Drum Machines ever, the Linndrum, DMX, TR808 and so on...

The basis is a kicksound like a Linn, but longer, to get the dancefloor "banging" sound and the sound of a couple of DX bass sounds stacked to sound powerful and with lots of punch.

I skipped the Emulator 2 strings, but i'm sure that's what they used in the earlier work next to the Fairlight.

I'm a fan of quality men like the whole team of SAW, Pete, Mike Matt are the forefront but the tape-op's and Tim Harding, Ian Curnow and all the guys that programmed the sounds and worked the desk are equally great."

The new DT200 replaces the PG200 for Roland JX3P

Published on Nov 6, 2013 karelpostthuis·58 videos

"I bought it, at last i can replace the worn out PG200!

As the old one still represents a good deal of dollars, the smartest move i could think of is to sell the old and buy the new, for practically the same money! :-)

PLUS, the DT200 is sturdy, yet lighweight and has the same handy magnetic strips on the back!

It comes with a new cable, impossible to find nowadays, and it really works like a dream, as the switches are of the highest quality available nowadays! These are NOT encoders that wear out, these are genuine POTS! Built to last!

This is NO CHINA MADE thing!

It's hand built, and the engineering is quite bluntly said -impressive-.

Plus this one will not start to rust!

I can recommend these to anyone using a MKS or JX3P."

Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 home made MIDI interface

YouTube via karelpostthuis
"The finished result of my home-made MIDI interface for the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 synthesizer.
Shows the response of the interface boards and pictures of the electronics inside my Prophet 5.
It was a pain to get it working properly as the Prophet had a LOT of faulty soldering making my interface look as if it generated flaws.
After rebuilding the internal powersupply the synth worked properly and also all tuning problems disappeared, the synth now works AS NEW!

If YOU have a synth that has no MIDI, mail me maybe i can build a board for you!"
