M-Z3R0 - curcuit bent ULTRA VL1 (concertmate - 200) part 1 of 3 - preset sound and beat manipulation

YouTube via manufacturedZ3R0
"The first of three videos demoing my casio VL1 based project. This one concentrates on manipulating the preset sounds and beats to create electro rhythms and later on some very NIN year zero inspired sound effects over a distorted beat. Part two focuses on subtle melody and sound fx and part three shows it creating all out wall noise and PE style sonic hell.

Can be built on request. PM me if you're interested."

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent ULTRA VL1 (concertmate - 200) part 2 of 3 - melody with Subtle LFO and delay

"Part two of three of my casio VL1 demos. This focuses on melody and subtle use of the LFO and embedded delay, moving on to trippy sound effects and then veering off into noise territory. Part three shows the absolute extreme end of what this machine is capable of."

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent yamaha pss170 (1 of 2) - Filter demo

YouTube Uploaded by manufacturedZ3R0 on Aug 15, 2011

"LFO with rate and depth
Death industrial delay v3
K-filter V2
Additional hum elimination circuitry
LTC1799 pitch mod
Processor glitch controls

A trial run of an embedded filter using the units own power supply while maintaining a clean signal path throught the filter. A total success and a quality sound.

This is how these keyboards were meant to be!

Concentrating here on the filter, with the delay adding ambience. Overloading the filter at about 4.15 for a nice bassline distortion and cutoff modulation..."

"Second part of the pss170 vid.

It's been upgraded since part one with some processor glitching and a drone switch.

Not quite a s pleasant to listen to as i just wanted to mess with the lfo and delay in the harsher side of what it can do.

I guess you'll either understand or you won't ;)"

"Back to where it all started.

No eye candy or wooden ends etc. I wanted substance over superficiality. As much as i enjoyed doing the larger machines and will probably do more when i think i've something signifigant to add again (like midi / adsr etc) i started to feel that the curious aspect of these little instruments that sparked my interest was getting lost in some kind of pseudo synthesizer territory to the point where i might as well have just moved on to total synth diy and ditched working on these things. I've taken what i've learned along the way and what i can do now, miniaturised it all for purpose and put it to work with the fundamentals of the circuit bending that bought me to where i am and what i can do now. The charm and fun of a bespoke circuit bent keyboard but with a sound that stretches from vanilla to hell.

I wanted a compact machine which made space very limited. So i opted to ditch all the drum mute/distortion bends and keep just the pitch control bend which is so easily applied to these. Grunge bossa nova and disco get old fast. I wanted this to be something you could sample the hell out of for trashed up noise and quirky analogue hits and sounds. It's heart revolves around additional circuitry. An embedded psu/supressor to power the keyboard, filter and delay efficiently and of course the filter and delay themselves. It also has a CV input around the side that allows you to modulate the filter cutoff via other equipment. In this case a sequential circuits Pro 1 with note sequences programmed to send out cv patterns.

The intro to this video was made using samples from this machine and the sampler/fx processing of propellerheads reason. Probably most apparent as the intro peaks with the delay crash.

I think i've got it right and i think this is something different and diverse within the realm. But i suppose like most things it's a matter of taste as to if you like this particular flavour or not :)"

Modifications and embedded circuitry:

Analogue resonant filter with high pass and low pass bands
Gain, resonance, low pass/high pass toggle and cutoff
A brilliant filter based on the synthacon.
Lot's of resonance and a unique character.

Digital 'death industrial' delay
Rate, noise, feedback, off/on toggle
This delay variant is based on what i've learned from modifying delay pedals in the past.
Quite an aggressive version that can dial up some serious noise as well as act as a pseudo reverb/conventional echo.

PSU - DC hum suppression circuitry
A regulated psu is now built into the machine.
This gives a stable and quiet power supply to both the keyboard and additional circuitry as well as
providing a quiet output and excellent noise floor.
Input voltage is 9 - 12V
Since filming the video the master power switch has been moved from the side of the machine to the top control panel which is a better position and looks neater.

Control voltage input to filter cutoff
3.5mm jack. Allows you to hook the casio up to your cv enabled equipment to modulate the filter.
Examples of this are shown in the demo video.
The cv modulation is provided by a sequential circuits pro1.

Master pitch control
Gives a large global pitch range - demonstrated in the demo video
Since filming the video a body contact has been added to the side of the machine which gives a handy way of pitch bending and modulation.

X1L3 - Circuit bent - synth mod - Roland TR-505 + Tascam four track cassette

Published on Jan 19, 2014 manufacturedZ3R0 .·104 videos

"Commisiion job consisting of my favoured modifications and some extras requested by the guy who sent it to me.

Ten minutes of shifting from place to place with the machine mods. Then another six focussing on the fx chain and the external input. That's the cure 'all mixed up' played backwards and slowed right down on a four track you can hear in the background and being smashed up towards the end.

Hit me up if you've got a 505 or 626 you'd like me to modify. Or any other drum machine for that matter :)"

X1L3 - circuit bent Casio PT-80 with midi retrofit + eurorack - The trip

Published on Jul 23, 2016 manufacturedZ3R0

"Casiotone trance.

Audio is slightly out of sync with the video, but the sun will still rise in the morning.

Playing the Pt-80 via midi from reason. Under pinned with a 4/4 sequence. An A/R generator is being triggered on 16th notes on my eurorack, also via midi. The attack/release is connected to the CV input on the casio, spiking the filter cutoff with a short envelope for the first and final sections of the vid. The envelope is turned off on the breakdown (0.50 - 1.22) allowing the filter cutoff to flat line and follow only the cutoff knob manually.

Additional tronix:

XILE Midi retrofit on channel 15
PT2399 delay
Steiner synthacon resonant filter
Front mounted led array (midi activity indicator)
Regulated internal psu board

Raw bends:

Pitch control
Kick mute
Snare mute
Hi hat mute
Chord mute
Lead boost
Drum boost
Drum/lead combined distortion - merges the two in a dirty sort of way

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent casio SA8 running through an M-Z3R0 K-Filter.

YouTube via manufacturedZ3R0 | February 15, 2011 |

"Nothing overly eclectic or wild but a good example of how my filter can make even something as basic sounding as the casio SA sound like a good synthesizer. These will be available on both ebay and via commission shortly.

The casio is fitted with several new mods of it's own which will be coming up in a video shortly. Having upgraded to pcb work for my modifications a new wave of highly modified machines are on their way.

Sorry about the poor lighting of the vid. Having relocated i over estimated the quality of image i'd get under the new lighting conditions."

X1L3 - SH4RD - HNW/PE/GLITCH - Eurorack module

Published on Aug 26, 2017 manufacturedZ3R0

"Improvised jam experimenting with gating the inputs of shard. Grinding, screaming, strangely mesmerising sensory dissonance.

If you came here by accident while looking for the wave105 commercial radio top five and you hate it then i fully understand. If you came here intentionally and knew you'd hate it then you're probably a tool. But that's alright, the sun will still shine in the morning and in ten minutes nobody will care. Stick to what you do best. You'll be fine, i promise.

MIdi to gate to ADSR gens to shard CV ins. Shard to ripples to clouds (as reverb) to output mixer.

Overlooked by Yorick and underpinned by a repetetive drone from a braids which kicks the whole thing off. It builds into some found sound drums and then just drops out and crawls through a storm of debris intil it crawls under the stone it came from at the end.

A more focussed/less lazy beers and early hours jam demo soon. A dedicated 6U 84HP noise, video and tronix suitcase is in the works for this reason."

"SHARD - HNW/PE/GLITCH OSCILLATOR
£85.00 / Coming Soon

SHARD - harsh noise / power electronics and glitch generator

Harsh noise and S&M floor show?

14HP - purely for generating chaos, violence and the abstract.

Controls:
Six oscilators merged into a well masochism - Three fragments - three shards.
Choke - A fetish for punishment - stress relief for the all that is - it's just breath control.
CV control over all parameters - 3x shard / 3x fragment / choke - all with front panel response setting controls.

Intentionally psychotic, with a good degree of control. It thrives on modulation sources. Vactrol implementation benefits from attenuation where finesse is required, but is just as fascinating when under manual or simple high/low gate control.

Skiff friendly - approximately 26cm from panel to deepest component depth.

Check out the videos below:

M-Z3R0 - dreadnought - part 1 - melodic piano and noise

YouTube via manufacturedZ3R0
"Two circuit bent casios built into an old school wooden synth casing.

Melodic, random, noisy, it pretty much does the lot.

SA1 mods: distortion, pitch, filter, variable speed 2-8 step arpeggiator/LFO with depth control on each step, note hold on two switchable octaves, deep crash.

PT10 mods: drone distortion, pitch, drum booster, lead booster, LFO with depth and rate."

M-Z3R0 - dreadnought - part 2 - modulated deep crash + lfo action

"Deep crashed drone and glitching.

The upper half of the dreadnought is crashed while the lower keys are used for playing and LFO action. Later in the vid the deep crash/glitch control is used to vary the processor crash."

M-Z3R0 - dreadnought - part 3 - dark side chip tune

"Commodore 64 inspired chip tune and hi speed lfo drone.

Another run on the dreadnought. This time with some c64 drums added in ableton live (taken from the games delta and armalyte) and a selection of hardcore drum hits later on to build the track.

A good example of how this thing can be used in various lo-fi styles."

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent yamaha pss-80

YouTube Uploaded by manufacturedZ3R0 on Sep 27, 2011

"Another Yamaha pss model added to the collection. The pss-80 has a lot in common with the 30. Nice raw digital waveforms and drum sounds that work well with the analogue filter. It has a very 'aphex twin' feel to it. The demo runs through melodic to drone/noise to abstract fx using the LFO. Currently one of my favourite modified keyboards.

Yamaha Pss50/Pss9 & Casio SA1 demos to come soon. On the lookout for as many Pss models as i can find at the moment. Many are said to be 'unbendable', with a little bit of patience and some diy pcb work there's not much out there that can't be turned into something new....."

X1L3 - circuit bent - PT87 - harsh noise and power electronix redux

Published on Oct 15, 2017 manufacturedZ3R0

"Revisiting the PT87 for what is probably the last time with 32 minutes of post optimism improvised power electronics.

Shop:
http://www.x1l3.bigcartel.com/

Cleared out the hoard of these in the circuit bending stash recently and modified them all. They're becoming harder and harder to get these days and this is most likely the last run of them from this camp. It seemed fitting to throw out the constraints of percieved attention span and adherence to a time limit and just let the camera roll. If you're here it's either by accident or you know what you're looking for. And if this is what you're looking for then turn it up, sit back, have a beer, take a trip through the shatter zone and let the machine do the talking. This is the modified board at work, with no additional fx. Shifting from scene to scen within the noise through the set. A great variety of dark and harsh PE orientated textures.

If you visit the shop, there are at the time of writing this PT87 and 82's available. Other than the colour they're identical in performance. Once they're gone they're more than likely gone for good this time.

X1L3 - circuit bent Casio PT-80 with midi retrofit + eurorack - Synthetic industrial

Published on Jul 24, 2016 manufacturedZ3R0

Watch your volume levels on this one to start.

"Casiotone industrial.

Playing the Pt-80 via midi from reason. An A/R generator is hooked up to the CV input to apply an envelope to the filter cutoff. This comes into play more prominently as the video progresses. The circuit bent aspect isn't really used here and the video focuses on the midi, delay and filter. It is however more than capable of excelling in the fucked up noise arena :)

XILE Midi retrofit on channel 15
PT2399 delay
Steiner synthacon resonant filter
Front mounted led array (midi activity indicator)
Regulated internal psu board

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent yamaha DD8 + K-filter V2

YouTube Uploaded by manufacturedZ3R0 on Aug 16, 2011
Listen to this one evolve.
"An old DD8 i did back in 2009. Out and about to demo the K filter processing drums,,,,,"

M-Z3R0 filters on eBay

"The M-Z3R0 - K-FILTER is a high quality analogue resonant low pass filter FX unit.

This is a progression on my earlier K-filter. This filter now has a pre-amp section which has allowed me to add filter overdrive,

gain reducer control and amp input level. Combined with the standard cutoff/resonance controls they turn this into an interesting fx unit

for mashing up drum loops or adding a 'bit crusher' style effect to sounds.

Add this to any piece of equipment and it immediately takes it to a whole new level in audio diversity.

Even a childs keyboard can sound like a good analogue synth through one of these, as the link shows."
