Musikmesse: KORG Monotron Analogue Ribbon Synthesizer

"Analog synthesis returns, in the legendary KORG tradition
Korg is no newcomer to the joys of analog synthesis. Back in the 1970s, our astounding fully polyphonic PS-3000 Series and our affordable semi modular MS Series set the bar for creative musicians around the globe. Surely one of the most popular of Korg's analog synthesizers was the coveted MS-20, famous for its dynamic sound creation capabilities and its fat, snarly, expressive filter. Kept popular by dance and electronic artists, this legendary MS-20 filter came back to life using the Component Modeling Technology in Korg's Legacy software collections. Now you can experience the glorious, evocative MS-20 filter along with true analog synthesis in Korg’s new monotron Analogue Ribbon Synthesizer!!

Analog on the go!
Powered by two alkaline AAA batteries, the compact monotron can be held in one hand. Although small enough to easily carry with you, the amazing monotron is packed with KORG's legendary analog technology, generating thick and powerful sounds. Concentrating on the most important sound parameters, the controls have been streamlined as much as possible. The panel contains only five knobs and one switch. With this level of simplicity, now anyone can easily enjoy the world of analog synthesizers.

Product Highlights:

* Full-fledged, true analog synthesizer: VCO, VCF, LFO

* Inspiring, easy-to-play ribbon keyboard

* Intuitive, fun-to-tweak controls

* Features the same classic analog filter found in the legendary Korg MS-10 & MS-20

* Filter any external source using the audio input jack

* LFO can modulate either pitch of filter cutoff

* LFO Rate knob features cool LED visual indicator.

* Battery operation and palmtop size equals true portability

* Internal speaker/headphone jack lets you enjoy the sound anywhere – alone or with friends!

Ribbon controller keyboard offers easy expression
Borrowing the enjoyment of performing with a simple touch from Korg's wildly popular KAOSS products, the monotron's ribbon controller keyboard takes this ease of use even farther. Simple finger gestures can produce expressive effects such as vibrato and glide. Used in a band, you can expand your possibilities by harmonizing with another instrument – or taking center stage for a monotron solo!

1VCO, 1VCF, 1LFO – Modular synthesis building blocks
The monotron's circuit is radically simple: one voltage-controlled oscillator, one voltage-controlled filter, and one low frequency oscillator. Since each knob directly applies a specific change to the sound, the process of sound creation is intuitive, and instantly understandable. Simple is best. Gone are the deep lists of presets and parameters typical of today's synthesizers. Instead, the monotron encourages exploration and experimentation. The monotron provides the joy of sonic creativity that's at the heart of analog synthesis, making it an ideal choice for someone who is new to synthesizers, or for musicians who wants to expand their sonic palette.

The famous Korg filter
The monotron uses the same highly acclaimed VCF circuit as KORG's classic MS-10 and MS-20 semi modular synthesizers. Originally released over 30 years ago, these instruments are still coveted today for their aggressive, dynamic filters. The VCF Cutoff knob sets the frequency or tone of the filter; the VCF Peak knob adds emphasis. A powerful filter is an essential aspect of any analog synthesizer, applying dramatic tonal changes to the sound, and projecting an intense personality that will stand out in any live performance.

Semi modular satisfaction
Just as on the original MS-20, the monotron's filter can be "patched into," allowing any external audio source to be processed by the monotron's filter. The input jack (AUX input) built into the monotron's compact body inserts the AUX input into the signal path right before the VCF. This provides a great way to connect a KAOSSILATOR, a keyboard, a guitar, a digital audio player or even an un-mixed track to the monotron and enjoy tone-bending filter effects.

Versatile LFO provides audio – and visual – excitement!
You can switch the LFO to control either the oscillator pitch or the filter cutoff frequency. Both LFO Rate and LFO Intensity knobs are provided. As you turn the LFO Rate knob – featuring an embedded LED – the speed of the modulation effect and the speed of the blinking LED will change in tandem. Turning this knob can add another level of impact to your live performances.

Listen anywhere – alone or with friends
A miniature speaker is built into the monotron. Along with the battery operation and compact size, this feature allows you to enjoy the monotron anywhere, at any time. The ultimate in compactness, this system brings you new possibilities for performance. There's also a headphone output that you can use when creating sounds at home, for recording, or for connecting to an amplifier or PA system."

KORG monotron DELAY x monotribe = Future Dub Sound!!

YouTube Uploaded by KORGINC on Oct 31, 2011

"monotron DUO key features:

Two analog oscillators (VCO) with individual tunings

Edgy X-MOD (with Intensity knob) circuit from Korg’s classic Mono/Poly

VCF with Cutoff and Peak Control

Ribbon controller keyboard with Scale Select

Original Analog (VCF) Filter taken from the classic MS-10 & MS-20

Aux input jack lets you apply filter to any audio source

Built-in speaker and battery power for Go Anywhere Analog sound

Headphone jack for private use

Dual Oscillator / X-Mod Design
Offering two oscillators, the monotron DUO adds an extra dimension, delivering an even more extreme sound. Tune the oscillators in unison for a rich, thick, analog tone. Tune them in intervals for classic soloing sounds and generating new effects. The X-MOD (cross modulation) circuit taken from Korg's classic Mono/Poly can introduce a mild or razor-sharp edge to the overall sound; everything from a rich vibrato to extreme metallic sounds reminiscent of an FM synth.

Enhanced Ribbon Controller Keyboard
The monotron DUO's ribbon controller keyboard now features the familiar Scale function used on the KAOSSILATOR. You can use this button to select one of four scales: Chromatic, Major, Minor, or Off. Choose the Chromatic scale to play precise pitches as on a piano, or choose Major or Minor to generate musically coherent phrases by simply sliding your finger around on the keyboard."

----------------

"monotron DELAY key features:

Space Delay with Rate and Intensity controls offers analog-style echoes

New Pitch LFO with selectable Waveshape and Intensity and shape controls

VCF with Cutoff Control

Wide-range ribbon controller keyboard

Original Analog (VCF) Filter taken from the classic MS-10 & MS-20

Aux input jack lets you apply filter to any audio source

Built-in speaker and battery power for Go Anywhere Analog sound

Headphone jack for private use

Classic Analog Synth / Space Delay Combination
A good delay was an essential part of the classic analog synthesizer sound. More often than not, that delay came from a tape-style echo machine until affordable digital delays were created. The monotron DELAY is an analog synthesizer optimized for sound effects. In addition to its analog oscillator, filter, and LFO, it also provides a Space Delay that's indispensable for swooping, cosmic sounds. The monotron DELAY even reproduces the pitch changes that occur when you vary the delay time, just as though you were using an analog tape echo. This fat and warm delay will add an authentic edge to your analog sounds!

Dual-Waveform LFO
The Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO) waveform used to modulate the pitch now offers a choice of waveshapes – a new square wave plus the traditional triangle wave. Both the Rate (Speed) and the Intensity (Depth) can be adjusted independently. In addition, a trimpot on the back panel can continuously adjust the shape/direction of the triangle wave or the pulse-width of the square wave to deliver even more versatility. Used in conjunction with the delay, the LFO can create dazzling effects and provide unique possibilities for embellishing your songs.

Wide-Range Ribbon Keyboard
The monotron DELAY's ribbon controller keyboard features a wide, four-octave range. This design allows the pitch to be controlled even more aggressively and dynamically, making the monotron DELAY a great weapon for a DJ to get the floor moving with irresistible sound. The reversed white keys and body adornments glows under black light illumination, making the monotron DELAY ideal for delivering a striking visual impact in nearly any club environment."

Thanks guys.

The monotron is cheap and begging to be circuit bent and hacked.

Its a shame that the monotron filter used is only the low pass one from the Korg MS 20.
To get a real feel of the beauty that is the MS 20 you also need the high pass.
Please Korg... put the HP filter in your next monotron.

Korg Monotron - LFO Sync Mod Compilation

Published on Jan 18, 2013 KrassesZeug·46 videos

"This is a compilation of the possibilities of a LFO-sync modded Korg Monotron analog synthesizer.
In this mod (see also http://stevewoodward.posterous.com/lfo-reset-point-on-korg-monotron), the low-frequency oscillator (LFO) of the Monotron (sync slave) can be retriggered by pulse signals in this case from a Roland TR-626 rhyrtm computer (sync master). The trigger signals sent by the TR-626 can be programmed by its rimshot pattern. Shuffled notes of the sync master are directly introduced into the Monotron LFO, to give also a shuffle effect.

Advantages of this mod is the low-budget (~2$, only a few cables and a 3.5 mm plug are needed) and the possibility to sync other music devices to the TR-626 via MIDI at the same time. Like shown here a Nanoloop (http://www.nanoloop.de/gameboy) cadtridge for Gameboy Classic, can also be synced with the same pulses.

This LFO-sync Mod enhances the possibilities of the Korg Monotron significantly.
It allows to use the synchronized Monotron analog filter LFO for external audio, as well as for the internal voltage controlled oscillator (VCO).

If the Monotron LFO frequency is tuned higher the retrigger frequency of the sync master, there is also the possiblilty of cross-modulation effects, like for the unsynced version.

Project - MONOTRON Acid Thing

Published on Aug 11, 2013 squidfanny·149 videos

squidfanny on eBay (RSS)

"An old project, revived from the dead for a Monotron experiment. This synth was originally a TB-303 clone (known as the FB383), which I sadly killed after getting carried away with some modifications some years back :(
I recently managed to bring it back to life, and despite the permanently damaged tuning scale, it's been successfully combined with a Monotron!

So - The Monotron is triggered by various points inside the tb-303 clone. Non provide accurate pitch tracking, but I can tap into the envelopes, gate & various other interesting spot's.

The fun really happens when the Monotron is used as a modulator, to disrupt and screw around with the 303's internal systems. There's alot of weird modulation and bypassing going on with this machine, the best sounds are thanks to the 'Rezzy/Acid FM' on the 303, which I shamelessly copied from Circuitbenders.co.uk. It really is an amazing sound! Kudos to CBUK.

Sounds ace when the Monotron is used as the modulation source for the FM mod, and at various point's in the vid I'm using digital drums, sent through the Monotron, to act as the modulator.
The result is some fierce acid distortion and noise damage....

This is a 'work in progress'. Definably needs some more work, but the initial results are promising :)

Big thanks Mark for your generous gift of the Monotron :)"

Rude 66 Monotron Mods for Sale

via Monotron Mods
"As cool as the Korg Monotron is, wouldn’t it be nice if it could be controlled externally?

I can modify your Monotron to accept cv/gate signals so it can be controlled directly by an analogue sequencer, or through midi via a cv/gate converter.

You’ll get an external box with a seperate cable (as obviously the Monotron is too small to include all the parts) that can be taken off so your Monotron can be used as before. it's a standard S-video cable, so you can replace it. both the box and the monotron have 4-pin DIN input connectors.

The box includes inputs for:
-gate signal (5V)
-CV signal for oscillator pitch
-Cv signal for filter
-a switch for filter tracking
-a potmeter/ trimmer to adjust pitch cv
The box is connected to the Monotron with a 4-pin mini-DIN cable..."

Monotron++ is modified version of Monotron that come from Korg. 'MIDI-IF', 'VCA' and some other things are added onto it.
'MIDI-IF' allows you to be able to control Monotron++ by keyboard. VCA works as noise gate. But you can use it by external cv to control its expressions (option). The schematic of VCA is also based on MS-20. It's getting to be almost MS-20 clone now.
All the information for modifying is opened for anyone else of the world.

I add 4 parameter to Monotron++

Glide
VCO Wave form selector Switch(SQR / SAW )
Pulse width for SQR Wave
EG/LFO switch
Output Volume (for recording out)

HAXXED OMNICHORD SYNTHESIZER w/ Monotron Delay

+ HAXXED OMNICHORD SYNTHESIZER + for Olly (December 2013)

Published on Dec 19, 2013 HAXXOR AUDIO·38 videos

Note: HAXXOR is Dave Bradbury's aka Squidfanny's new branding. Not sure if it replaces Squidfanny. I shot Dave a message to find out. I did however create a new HAXXOR label for new posts and found one older post I added it to. See the HAXXOR channel at the bottom of this post for it.

Video description:
"This modified Omnichord OM-84 has been infiltrated and subverted using an assortment of DIY circuitry, and a Monotron Delay -

The Monotron is firmly bolted onto the Omnichord, and provides Resonant Filter & Space Echo, and there's a little mixer built into the Omnichord, so that it's individual channels can be sent through the echo & filter.

The Monotron can even be triggered from the Omnichord!

Deep hardware hacking using a sophisticated little Step-Sequencer circuit has opened up a world of weirdness, modulations and custom rhythm patterns.

The Step-Sequencer will trigger a pair of envelope generators, which can be used to MODULATE THE PITCH of the Omnichord & MODULATE THE ECHO RATE on the Monotron. Both envelope generators can also be used the Trigger the Monotron and provide Whooshy synth sounds.

The Modulated Echo sounds amazing....

There's also an array of metal touch-points, which can be used to 'Play' the insides of the Omnichord with fingers...

Other Modifications include a Patch-Bay, which can be used to re-patch the triggers from the preset rhythms (drums, chord & bass), and an extra row of patch-able bolts belonging to the Step-Sequencer; these bolts can be used to generate unique custom rhythms, or just used to add variations to the existing rhythms.

There's also some knobs for tweaking the Analog Drum sounds, and there's powered individual outputs on the back of the machine for the Omnichords separate channels (Drums, Chord/Bass & Harp).

Yep, this one's been an epic project..... Learned alot though, and it's interesting to see how the technology inside has advanced from the original OM-27 (produced 8 years earlier in 1980).
This OM-84 was the last 'Analog' Omnichord, and although the voicing circuits ARE analog, all of the really cool chips/circuits have been compressed into a large ROM/MPU, so sadly they can't be accessed externally - and that means NO GLITCH SOUNDs on this machine :(
Instead, I've gone to some considerable effort to modify the ECHO on the Monotron, to act as a 'Glitch Sound' provider. It works very well, and has an interesting 'under water' style of sounds, which I really like :)

Sorry about the dodgy audio levels in places - recorded this vid late at night with cheap headphones, while the neighborhood was soundly sleeping :]"

The Borgatron - Gesture Controlled Monotron

(DEMO)Korg Monotron Hacked into Gesture Synth called the Borgatron. Demo of operation

"A Demo of the Borgatron in action ... a beer and a disco light."

Korg Monotron Hacked into Gesture Synth called the Borgatron.
Published on Nov 16, 2012 by SolarisBorgatron
"Korg Monotron modified by replacing analog pots with digital ones that are controlled by a wii nunchuck in one hand and a pot selector in the other.
The x,y accelerometers and the x,y joy thumbstick are mapped to individual digital pots.
Meaning that you can wave the nunchuck around and make lots of complex sounds. The monotron ribbon has also been removed and a visual basic sequencer directly drives the monotron. So from monotron to Borgatron. Its an ugly beast only its mother could love.
So really it is a form of Gesture synth as you have to move your arms about and strike a pose.... possibly very good for Electro Vogue-ing."

Production Room - Korg Monotron Analog Ribbon Synthesizer

YouTube via productionroom | July 13, 2010

"Powered by two alkaline AAA batteries, the compact monotron can be held in one hand. Although small enough to easily carry with you, the amazing monotron is packed with KORGs legendary analog technology, generating thick and powerful sounds. Concentrating on the most important sound parameters, the controls have been streamlined as much as possible. The panel contains only five knobs and one switch. With this level of simplicity, now anyone can easily enjoy the world of analog synthesizers.

Borrowing the enjoyment of performing with a simple touch from Korgs wildly popular KAOSS products, the monotrons ribbon controller keyboard takes this ease of use even farther. Simple finger gestures can produce expressive effects such as vibrato and glide. Used in a band, you can expand your possibilities by harmonizing with another instrument or taking center stage for a monotron solo!

The monotrons circuit is radically simple: one voltage-controlled oscillator, one voltage-controlled filter, and one low frequency oscillator. Since each knob directly applies a specific change to the sound, the process of sound creation is intuitive, and instantly understandable. Simple is best. Gone are the deep lists of presetsand parameters typical of todays synthesizers. Instead, the monotron encourages exploration andexperimentation. The monotron provides the joy of sonic creativity that's at the heart of analog synthesis, making it an ideal choice for someone who is new to synthesizers, or for musicians who wants to expandtheir sonic palette.

The monotron uses the same highly acclaimed VCF circuit as KORGs classic MS-10 and MS-20 semi modular synthesizers. Originally released over 30 years ago, these instruments are still coveted today for their aggressive, dynamic filters. The VCF Cutoff knob sets the frequency or tone of the filter; the VCF Peak knob adds emphasis. A powerful filter is an essential aspect of any analog synthesizer, applying dramatic tonal changes to the sound, and projecting an intense personality that will stand out in any live performance."
