Dave Smith Releases Mopho Keyboard

See this post for where you can find it. Official press release for the archives:

"New Analog Mono Synth is Full-Featured, Compact, Affordable

HALF MOON BAY, Calif.—May 5, 2010—Dave Smith Instruments has released a keyboard version of Mopho, DSI’s popular desktop synthesizer module. The Mopho Keyboard is a monophonic synthesizer with an all-analog signal path, an expanded user interface, and a full-sized, semi-weighted keyboard action.

From a functional perspective, the Mopho Keyboard does not do anything radically different. It is what most players desire and expect from an analog mono synth. DSI’s goal was ambitious in other ways, though. “It goes without saying that it had to sound good, but we’ve also managed to create a very portable, very playable instrument without sacrificing the performance features people want. And we did it without compromising and resorting to things like smaller, cheaper keys,” said founder Dave Smith. “At the same time, we recognize that the cost of analog synths has long been a barrier for many would-be players, so the challenge was to make the Mopho Keyboard available at a price more people can afford. As I’ve said before, designing synthesizers is great, but it’s hearing what people do with them that makes it really fun.”

DSI’s Andrew McGowan added, “When we released the Mopho module we heard from many people that it was not just their first analog synthesizer, but their first hardware synthesizer. And that after experiencing a real analog synth they finally ‘got it.’ We hope the Mopho Keyboard gives even more people an opportunity to ‘get it.’”

The Mopho Keyboard’s voice architecture is essentially the same as DSI’s Mopho and Tetra desktop synthesizer modules. It features two oscillators, two sub-octave generators, selectable 2- or 4-pole low-pass filter, feedback, and a ton of modulation options, including three envelope generators, four LFOs, and a 16 x 4 step sequencer. It has a full-sized, semi-weighted, 32-note keyboard with velocity and aftertouch and full-sized pitch and modulation wheels. The Poly Chain feature enables expanded polyphony using other DSI synths. For example, combining a Mopho Keyboard with a Tetra results in a very portable five-voice poly synth. Other features include USB and the ability to process external audio through Mopho’s filter and VCA.

The Mopho Keyboard measures approximately 18.65" L x 11.1" W x 3.6" H (47.4 cm x 28.2 cm x 9.1 cm) and weighs under 10 pounds (~4.5 kg).

The Mopho Keyboard offers excellent value for classic analog sound in a modern, space-saving package. It is available now with an MSRP of $879.00 and an MAP of $799.00.

Dave Smith Instruments Announces Mopho Special Edition Keyboard

Dave Smith Instruments Announces Mopho Special Edition Keyboard

Best-Selling Analog Synth Gets Larger Keyboard, Updated Look and Feel

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—October 15, 2013—Dave Smith Instruments today introduced a special edition of its popular monophonic analog synthesizer, the Mopho Keyboard. “The Mopho family of instruments has been ground-breaking for us and for our customers in terms of value,” said DSI’s Andrew McGowan. “And I think it’s pretty apparent from the way the industry responded that we were on to something with smaller, more affordable, but full-featured instruments, whether modules or keyboards. But there is no typical synthesizer user and we’ve gotten feedback from customers who loved the synth’s sound and features, but who wanted an instrument with a larger keyboard. Now there is one.”

The Mopho SE (special edition) sports an expanded, full-sized, 44-note, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity sensitivity and aftertouch. The larger keyboard facilitates certain playing techniques—like smears for synth bass lines—and is more appropriate for use as a MIDI controller both onstage and in the studio. Even with the additional octave of keys, it’s still just a little more than 25 inches long and its trim profile and light weight make it ideal for gigging. And, like the other Mopho Keyboards, the polyphony can be expanded with the addition of a DSI Tetra or another Mopho synth.

The front panel artwork is now screen printed directly onto the Mopho SE’s sturdy metal enclosure. And it features a full complement of the Prophet 12’s great looking, and even better feeling, soft-touch knobs.

“A lot of synths in this price range have to cut corners to hit a price point; the Mopho SE takes a no compromise approach. As a family of products, these instruments offer great sound and a lot of bang for the buck to a wide variety of players,” concluded McGowan. “There’s a Mopho for just about every synth need.”

The Mopho SE will be shipping by the end of October with a projected MAP of $949.

Dave Smith Instruments Officially Launches the Mopho

via Dave Smith Instruments:
"Mopho is a compact and affordable—but powerful—monophonic analog synthesizer. The voice architecture is identical to a single voice of the Prophet '08, but with a couple of unique twists to distinguish it from its award-winning sibling. We have added two sub-octave generators—one per oscillator—for additional girth and crushing basses. It also has an audio input that lets you process external audio and mix Mopho's own audio output back in pre-filter for feedback effects that can range from subtle distortion to extreme skronk. The Push It button is a manual trigger that lets you play a specific note or latch notes and sequences on. It can also step through a sequence to play short melodic lines without a keyboard. Of course, Mopho can also be used with a MIDI controller or external sequencer.
Mopho is fully programmable and all the parameters can be tweaked from the front panel. The four Assignable Parameters controls are assignable per program for optimum performance control. A free editor is available for Mac OS and Windows to facilitate programming. (And, if you already have a Prophet '08, most of Mopho's parameters can be controlled from the Prophet's front panel via MIDI!)
Mopho is perfect for people who want to learn the ins and outs of real analog synthesis without spending a bundle, DJs looking to add some old school sonic spice to their setups, and musicians who will appreciate a great-sounding, very portable mono synth.

* Affordable, fully programmable mono synth with a 100% analog signal path.
* Classic, real analog sound—including legendary Curtis analog low-pass filter.
* Process external audio through the filter and envelopes.
* Just 7.5" x 5" (19.05 cm x 12.7 cm).
* Free editor for Mac OS and Windows."

Street price in the US appears to be $399.

Mopho Gooey! 2.0 Synth Control Plug-in for Reaper

Published on Jun 30, 2016 Mister 1-2-3-4

"This Mr. Fingers-inspired track was created to test out working with Mopho Gooey! version 2.0, the latest version of the plug-in I programmed for Reaper which allows remote editing and automation of the Mopho desktop synthesizer module from Dave Smith Instruments.

All sounds were created with the Mopho synth and hardware effects pedals. The video shows the Program settings for every voice, as well as notes on the additional effects used.

You can download Mopho Gooey! 2.0 for free here: http://stash.reaper.fm/27985/MophoGoo...

Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with Dave Smith Instruments. This was created purely for my own benefit, and has only been tested with my home system. I hope others will find it useful, but you use this plug-in at your own risk."

And additional details via the press release:

"Announcing Mopho Gooey! 2.0, a major revision of my Reaper control plugin for the Mopho desktop analog synthesizer module by Dave Smith Instruments. It provides a convenient graphical user interface (GUI) for programming the multitude of parameters hidden behind the synth’s minimal interface and opens up new automation and modulation possibilities. What’s new in this version:
- Added a Banks menu where you can store and load up to 384 Programs.
- Added a Global Parameters menu.
- Operation hints for each control are now displayed in the lower-left corner of the GUI.
- You can now type in a new Program Name, rather than having to scroll through each character individually.
- Fast-incrementing of knobs is now done by right-clicking-and-dragging, which makes one-handed operation easier. Shift-clicking a parameter now restores it to the value saved in the currently-loaded Program.
- Added the ability to change all the steps in a Sequencer Pattern at the same time.
- The interface is about 10% smaller.
- The coding is much more efficient. Even though I added data for 384 Programs, the plugin is still significantly smaller than the prior version.

How to Make Your DSI Mopho Sound "Better"

via Tony of Oakley Sound Systems on Muff's (via Daniel Nikolaj Sand on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge):

"I've got a Mopho keyboard and it's a great little thing. But one thing puzzles me; when listening to any patch using a pulse wave, I notice the overall sound somewhat dirty sounding. It's not very nice really.

You can hear what mine sounds like here:

http://www.oakleysound.com/Mopho&Pulse.wav

I popped the hood and found that it is caused by the internal CVs to the voice chip that control the pulse wdith having some sort of randomised voltage added to them.

However, it is not only the pulse width control voltages that have this unwanted randomisation. All of the CVs do, but it is most noticeable on the pulse widths. What got me onto the right track was the fact that all the CVs had worse noise when they were set to high values. This points the finger towards a noisy reference voltage to the system's DAC.

The DAC used on the Mopho Keyboard appears to use a 5V reference derived from the +12V supply. Now, the 12V supply gets tainted by noise from the other parts of the electronics of the Mopho - but in particular from the -5V charge pump power supply which generates horrible 80kHz perturbations.

However, the real problem is that the Mopho creates the 5V reference by simply dividing the +12V rail with a pair of resistors (R67 and R71). This divided down signal, complete with a portion of the noise from the +12V rail, gets sent to a voltage follower (U18b) and then sent to the DAC. Oh dear... because this noise now ends up on the CVs. The higher the CV the more noise gets through.

Solution: Filter the +5V reference voltage before it goes to the voltage follower. I did it with a 10uF tantalum cap soldered directly across R71. The reference voltage is now nice and quiet. The Mopho behaves better, not only with respect to the pulse wave, but also seems smoother in general tone too.

The Mopho Keyboard is primarily built from surface mount components using lead free solder. This makes it slightly more awkward to work on than older through hole designs. However, it is quite possible to do a nice job if you take care.

You'll need one 10uF, 16V tantalum capacitor. You can use a decent quality electrolytic if you wish, and in that case, a 10uF, 25V will suffice.

Solder the cap across the resistor R71. With the keyboard to the front of the unit, the positive terminal of the cap should be facing left. That is the negative end should go to the ground plane which is attached to the end of R71 that is nearest to the number 1 of its name.

Don't pull too hard on the cap once it is soldered in place because you might pull off the solder pads of R71.

For the Mopho Desktop:

This seems to be built in much the same way with the DAC reference being taken off the +12V line. I am guessing it too will have the same unwanted noise on the DAC reference. However, the board is different in several other respects and the parts numbering is different.

Now I haven't tried this but from online photographs I can assume that you will need to solder the 10uF cap across R52. This is situated, again above the DAC, near U12. The negative pin of the cap should be soldered towards the front of the unit, ie. the positive pin will be mounted nearest the R52 legending."

Mister 1-2-3-4 MophoGUI VST3 - Free, Open-Source Editor/Librarian Plugin for the DSI Mopho

video upload by Mister 1-2-3-4 Programming

MophoGUI VST3 version 1.0.0 is now available for free download at https://programming.mr1234.com/mophogui-vst3/.

"Putting MophoGUI VST3 To Work: A Song Built with Mopho Sounds Plus FX

As a use-test of the MophoGUI VST3 plugin, I created this slow, atmospheric acid jam using only sounds generated by the Mopho desktop analog synthesizer module plus various effects boxes and plugins (compression, reverb, delay, phasing). In the first half of the video, I scroll through the Reaper project and reveal the various audio and MIDI tracks that went into creating the song. In the latter half, I isolate each of the Mopho sounds and display the MophoGUI editor settings used to create them. Program parameters that were automated to change over the course of the recording are circled in red."

Interface minus audio

"MophoGUI is a VST3 plugin designed to be used with the Mopho desktop analog synthesizer module, manufactured by Dave Smith Instruments between 2008 and 2015. It presents all of the Mopho’s program parameters in a single editor window, lets you edit them within your DAW, allows for the automation of parameter changes, and lets you store and recall both factory and custom programs. At this time, MophoGUI is only functional within Cockos’ Reaper (version 6 and later) and Steinberg’s Cubase (version 10 and later). This video explains how to set up the plugin in those two DAWs.

00:00 Intro
00:22 Global Parameter settings on the hardware
01:17 Installing the plugin
01:27 Setting up tracks in Reaper
02:15 Setting up tracks in Cubase
03:24 Loading and editing sounds on the hardware via the plugin interface

MophoGUI is distributed free and open source under the GPL v3 license. You can download it and get more information about the code at https://programming.mr1234.com/ If you find the plugin useful, please consider making a donation at the same website to support further development!

THIS PLUGIN DOES NOT GENERATE AUDIO. It simply provides editing and automation capabilities for the Mopho desktop hardware module. If you do not possess that module, the plugin is of no use to you. It is not compatible with the keyboard model.

I have no association with either Dave Smith Instruments or Sequential Circuits. These companies bear no responsibility for MophoGUI and cannot provide any form of support for it."

"Enhancements in this version:

- Compatible with Reaper (version 6 and up) and Cubase (version 10 and up)

- All sound parameters are exposed and can be automated and/or controlled via external devices.

- Six program storage banks: three read-only Factory banks which hold the original program presets that shipped with the hardware, and three Custom banks where you can store your own programs.

- The ability to copy-and-paste programs between slots in the Program Banks window.

- Specific wave shapes can be selected directly by holding down a number key and clicking an Oscillator Shape knob.

- Floating tooltip windows appear when you hover the mouse over a parameter control for a few moments. You can change the amount of time before the tips appear or turn them off entirely.

- More polished look-and-feel."

iMopho1 v1.2 CoreMIDI iPad Editor Now Available

YouTube Uploaded by iControlMIDI on Mar 16, 2012

"Apple has released iMopho1 v1.2 our Wired and Wireless CoreMIDI iPad Editor for DSI Mopho module / keyboard.

iControlMIDI for the Mopho offers all the Program parameters.

iControlMIDI displays some numerical parameter values in semitones, cents, notes, ms, Hz or BPM rather than plain numbers.
Like a hardware step sequencer, the used steps are lighten up by iControlMIDI.

In order to offer an even faster workflow:
• iControlMIDI automatically enables the Mopho Module / Keyboard parameters and value lists based on Page 0 Synth selection
• iControlMIDI automatically disables the Mopho Module / Keyboard parameters and value lists based on Page 0 Synth selection
• iControlMIDI automatically enables the some parameters based on other parameters values
• iControlMIDI automatically disables the some parameters based on other parameters values

The Mopho can be edited using the following Pages:
• Page 0: MIDI channel selection and Mopho Module / Keyboard selection
• Page 1: Global parameters
• Page 2: Program DCO1 and DCO2 parameters
• Page 3: Program VCF and VCF Envelop parameters
• Page 4: Program VCA and VCA Envelop parameters
• Page 5: Program LFO parameters
• Page 6: Program Envelop3 parameters
• Page 7: Program Modulation Matrix, ARP and Sequencer Modulations parameters
• Page 8: Program Velocity, Modulation Wheel, Pressure, Breath Controller and Foot Controller Modulation parameters
• Page 9: Program Sequencer 1 and 2 parameters
• Page 10: Program Sequencer 3 and 4 parameters
• Page 11: Program Naming"

DSI Mopho - 80s ARP by iControlMIDI
"Here is another example of how you can realtime control sounds with iControlMIDI.
We are using the 2 Sub Oscillators and the ARP 2-octave up & down to create the sound; then sequencing 2 notes, 1 octave apart which is creating the 3 octaves sequence basis.
The first part of the sequence, only DCO 1 can be heard.
The second part of the sequence, we are using iControlMIDI to slowly move the DCO Mix towards DCO 2; which has a high pitched Oscillator modulated by LFO 1.
The third part of the sequence, we are using iControlMIDI to change the LFO1 Waveform from Square to Random, then back to Square.
The fourth and last part of the sequence, we are using iControlMIDI so fade out the VCA.
There is a high end (hardware) reverb."

Axel F - on the MoPho

YouTube via syntesen. sent my way via fischek.
"I recently got the Dave Smith Instruments MoPho real analog, monophonic synthesizer (serial #281), and while I'm already putting it to good use in my own music, I decided to make a demo of a well-known song to show how powerful, this very affordable analog synthesizer is.

I chose the Beverly Hills Cop theme music by Harold Faltermeyer, because it's based around synthesizers and really demonstrates the range of sounds from the MoPho - from fat, powerful basses to searing leads.

All of the sounds in this demo except for the sampled drums and a single DX-7 piano sound are from the MoPho, programmed by myself. Except for the drums and bass, all of the parts are hand-played without correction.

In my opinion, the MoPho is probably the best sounding synthesizer that's affordable for most people on the market right now. It's warm, thick but even deadly aggressive if you want it to. It even has 4 16-step sequencers ;)

MoPho part list:
- Bass
- Leads
- Chords
- Xylophone
- Hihats
- Noise pops
- Dubbed snare sound

The short E-piano sound is courtesy of the Yamaha DX-7, and the drums the LinnDrum (or rather, samples of it ;))

___________________

All in all, I hope you like the demo - if not for the music, then because of the sounds! Remember, the MoPho is a $299 instrument ;)"

Update: It's more like $399 in the US. Not sure where he found that price.

Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Analog Synth

via this auction
"About This Unit (From The Manufacturer):

Mopho is a compact and affordable—but powerful—monophonic analog synthesizer.

* Just 7.5" x 5" (19.05 cm x 12.7 cm).
* Free editor for Mac OS and Windows."

Note the rubber feet on the bottom are larger on top in order to slightly tilt the unit.

yr3wk47 rhodes thru mopho

yr3wk47 rhodes thru mopho from longcat on Vimeo.

"the rhodes going through the mopho's lowpass filter...

it's the 1st time i've tried it so the signal through the mopho was quite distorted, not a bad sound as it goes...

about a week after the recording i filmed the sky from a point in finsbury park... clouds slowly passing...

techy stuff:

the rhodes has it's own tremolo (the speed of which is shown by the flashing red light), i sent one channel to the mopho and one channel straight to record so you hear a mix of pure rhodes and filtered/distorted rhodes, it pulses between them at the speed of the rhodes tremolo...

the clouds video is often pulsing with the LFO in the mopho (or at half it's speed), i'm changing between 2-pole and 4-pole (self oscillating) filter types, changing the speed of the LFO (which is controlling the filter cutoff frequency), changing the resonance and cutoff frequency, altering the audio modulation (which modulates the cutoff frequency from the audio)...

the mopho is reading the level of the audio input and this is controlling it's own volume...

beautiful beast meets beautiful beast... more from this kind of experiment in the future...
