Nodal

"Nodal is a generative software application for composing music. It uses a novel method for the notation and playing of MIDI based music. This method is based around the concept of a user-defined graph. The graph consists of nodes (musical events) and edges (connections between events). You interactively define the graph, which is then traversed by any number of players who play the musical events as they encounter them on the graph. The time taken to travel from one node to another is based on the length of the edges that connect the nodes.

Nodal is free software available for Mac OS X based computers.

Working with Nodal

Nodal does not make any sound by itself – it only generates MIDI data. You will need a MIDI synthesiser to hear the output that Nodal is making. Nodal is compatible with any MIDI synthesiser. For simple demonstrations we recommend SimpleSynth.
Nodal will also work with Apple's GarageBand software."

This morning I visited the Nodal website and looked at the 2 videos there. I thought it looked interesting so I downloaded a demo which was still version 1.6. This evening I have tried it and bought the license for some less than 30 euro's because I wanted to be able to save. Here you can see the first results. My attempt is very basic though. There are three sequences. The first driving the Creamware MiniMax ASB, the 2nd the Clavia Nord Lead 1 and the 3rd the Waldorf Q Keyboard. Try Nodal yourself, it's fun (and cheap):

The first sequence is driving the Creamware MiniMax ASB, the second is transposing the Synthesizers.com sequence and the third is doing the bassline performed by a sine wave from the Ian Fritz Teezer Through-Zero VCO fed to the Resonant LoPass Gate. The Doepfer MAQ16/3 plays two 7-step sequences. The first sequence is driving the Synthesizers.com Modular which is transposed by Nodal, and the second is driving the self-built Modular."

Nodal 1.0.7 Triggering Demo

YouTube via pmcskeeter — April 19, 2010 — "This demo shows a number of exciting features that have been added to Nodal. First networks can be triggered with a MIDI note. In the example, a MIDI keyboard is used and represented with a Max/MSP patch showing what keys a currently depressed. The triggering feature also includes velocity scaling so that networks can be played at a range of dynamics.
The second feature is the ability to program in pitchbend CC messages, The long held notes at the end of the networks have a pitchbend curve on them, one of which is shown in the inspector window.

Nodal 1.0.7 is not yet released but we are very excited about the musical potential of this software and will be releasing it soon."

As each instrument (voice group triangle) has a different entry in the network it sounds like a musical canon. The first instrument is the MiniMax ASB, the second the Clavia Nord Lead 1 and the third the Waldorf Q Keyboard. The Mellotron strings are performed manually on the Roland XP-80.

YouTube via attorks — April 29, 2010 — "Again I was playing around with Nodal this evening and came up with these four coherent sequences which I liked a lot. The solo and the strings were improvised on that. Three synths are used for the four sequences. At first you hear the Creamware MiniMax ASB after which the Synthesizers.com and Waldorf Q Keyboard are joining. The Waldorf performs 2 sequences. You can see the Nodal screen just before the solo is played. The solo is performed on the Clavia Nord Lead 1 and the Mellotron strings on the Roland XP-80."

"I am aware of the risk of overfeeding you with video´s but the inspiration is there so let´s take advantage of that. This piece of music is sequenced in Nodal. It started last evening when I hooked up the Zoom RT-323 drum machine to be controlled by Nodal. The bass sequence is performed by the Ian Fritz Teezer Through-Zero VCO from which the sawtooth wave is fed to the Resonant LoPass Gate. Then you hear the tuned-up bass voice from the Zoom RT-323 doing a semi-random sequence. After that the Mellotron sound from the Roland XP-80 is introduced and the high-pitched sequence from the Creamware MiniMax ASB. The chords and occasional bass are performed on the Waldorf Q Keyboard and the solo on the Clavia Nord Lead 1."

"The UltraRollz Farm Detective is an all Analog Modular Synthesizer based on the concepts presented by Peter Blassers (Ciat-Lonbarde) 'Rollz-5 Drum Machine'

The Instrument is divided into 3 sections. A Dual UltraSound Filter module in the center and 2 "Rollz Plates" (one located on either side).

The 2 Rollz Plates each contain 4 Independent Rollz. These Rollz are essentially Pulse Generators that each oscillate at a unique speed. Each Rollz Plate offers 2 Even Rollz (4 stages) and 2 Odd Rollz (3 stages).

The Even Rollz (4 stages) are able to self oscillate at a low consistent speed (LFO), outputting a positive pulse every cycle via the output jack located next to the LED (The LED flashes correspond to the output state of each Roll).

The Odd Rollz (3 stages) do not self-oscillate. They only come alive when patched together with other Rollz. These paradoxical oscillators will then begin emitting bursts of Ultra Sonic noise that will later be processed using the Dual UltraSound Filter located in the center of the instrument.

Each of the 8 Rollz offers individual patch points at every stage of their oscillation (36 patch points in total). These Nodal Points allow one to "weave" the independent Rollz Oscillators together, this is where all the fun begins!

By weaving together the inner workings of several Rollz, complex interactions and 'incidents' begin to occur. There really is no Right or Wrong way of connecting these Nodal Points together. I like to think of this whole process as "creating a thinking brain". The more connections that are made, the more likely that bizarre sounds (thoughts) will begin to take place.

"On this occasion I am accompanied by my son Mark (Channel Metalrazor02 on YouTube) who plays the Ibanez GRG 270 electric guitar using an EBow. The EBow produces a infinite sustain for a guitar string by oscillating a magnetic field causing the string to vibrate. The electric guitar uses a Boss ME-50 Guitar Multiple Effects board. Mark wanted to accompany me if he was not filmed so that's why you don't see him.

The Nodal software sequencer is were it all starts doing the bass sequence performed by the Creamware MiniMax ASB. The Doepfer MAQ16/3 sequencer and the Zoom RhythmTrak RT-323 drum machine are MIDI synchronized from Nodal. The Synthesizers.com Q960 sequencer and Q962 sequential switch are shifted by gate signals from the MAQ16/3. Row 1 of the MAQ16/3 does a 4-step sequence and drives the Ian Fritz Teezer Through-Zero VCO which saw wave is fed to the Resonant LoPass Gate. Row 2 of the MAQ16/3 does an 8-step sequence driving the self-built Modular. Solo's are performed on the Roland XP80 doing an organ sound and the Clavia Nord Lead 1. The chords are performed on the Waldorf Q Keyboard.

"This afternoon I came up with a sequence with 3 voices on the Doepfer MAQ16/3 which sounded rather nice. The 3 voices are the Synthesizers.com Modular, the self-built Modular and the Ian Fritz Teezer Through-Zero VCO fed to the Resonant LoPass Gate. This evening I programmed Nodal to transpose the 3 sequences on the Doepfer MAQ16/3 and add another sequence for the CreamWare MiniMax ASB. I hooked up the Zoom RT-323 drum machine and in the video you see the result of the improvisation. The solo is played on the Clavia Nord Lead 1, the Mellotron strings on the Roland XP-80 and some additional chords on the Waldorf Q Keyboard."

"Tiction is a flexible, nodal music sequencer.

It’s pretty simple: Each node represents an event, and a connection from one node to the next triggers the next event after a certain number of tics. Nodes send MIDI note messages and/or MIDI controller change messages when triggered. Connecting nodes in a circuit lets you start a repeating pattern when one of the nodes is triggered.

A node can change its pitch and controller values based on its position on the screen. When a node is triggered, it performs some physical action: either repelling or attracting other nearby nodes, or nudging itself in a random direction. The physical interaction between nodes allows you to construct complex, rhythmic melodies and effects without having to draw filter envelopes or touch a traditional sequencer."
