Oral Hygiene via Punk Disco

via Punk Disco on AH:

"Hey all

http://www.punkdisco.co.uk/Music/oral_hygiene.mp3

We unashamedly sold out with this one. We have decided to abandon our punk ethics (it worked for The Clash) and go for the big corporate sponsorship deal. Within 6 months, this track will be played to you each time you open your toothpaste, via tiny little space age microchip record players. Colgate, Macleans, etc, email oral at punkdisco dot co.uk with your offers.

Most of the annoying mid-frequencies, discounting Leah, are from the HardSID 4U which we have fallen in love with. There is also some MKS80 and SunSyn love action.

PS: I have also just uploaded a slightly tweaked version of our "At the dISCO" track but unless you are an avid punkdISCO fan (hi Mum), you probably will not notice.

Roland SH-101 Demo on PunkDisco

I couldn't find a shot of a 101 on PunkDisco, so here a Future Retro 777 instead. Trippy shot.

Title link takes you to the PunkDisco music page. The third track, Letting Go, showcases the Roland SH-101.

"Not a proper track but rather a few hours of messing around to demo a sh101 (the main synth/bassline)

All sequenced from the 101 with no synchronisation. The 101 variation is just pushing the bender to modulate the VCO and VCF a bit. Audio recorded straight into Ableton Live which then took care of sync'ing. http://www.punkdisco.co.uk/Music.htm Letting Go (3rd track down)

I had to list it 3rd down as fello punkdISCO, Leah, hates the track for a few irrational reasons; the main one being that she was not involved.. Besides, its not a track - its a sh101 demo..

Drums = Airbase
Bells and whistles = Evolver

hugs,

Paul"

Some Korg MS20 Acid

Via Punkdisco.

As promised, here is the MS20 track out of our new song:

http://www.punkdisco.co.uk/misc/audio/MS20_PlayedBy303ViaESP.wma
http://www.punkdisco.co.uk/misc/audio/MS20_PlayedBy303ViaESP.wav

Starts to get quite heavy at 0:36.

Being played using the audio from a 303 into the ESP. Got some reverb and
delay on it (with some overdriving on the analogue delay) - recorded wet so
can't get rid of this.

Can't remember exactly how this was patched (main reason why I love
analogue!) but something is modulating the MS20 filters. Pretty sure we
also took the ESP envolope out and used that somewhere along the route..

Anyway, its from our new track so pls dont pinch it. Gunna be really pissed
off if I suddenly hear this in the latest Dido track or similar..

punkdISCO on the Roland MKS-80 and Doepfer Drehbank

via punkdISCO on the AH mailing list: "I cant understand why a few people are unimpressed with the MKS80. Maybe it's the interface? Anyway, I have had mine for maybe 6 years and for 5 years it remained unused (interface). I also had a Doepfer Drehbank that was also unused (it was setup to control a few synths so subsequently controlled none). I have now decided to setup the MKS80/Drehbank permanently paired. This means that when I turn then on, they work! The Drehbank has 64 knobs - the MKS80 has 64 editable parameters!
drehbank1_mks80.jpg
drehbank2_mks80.jpg
drehbank3_mks80.jpg
drehbank4_mks80.jpg
drehbank5_mks80.jpg

The MKS80 is an incredible synth. It just sounds wonderful. Extremely powerful and with the unusual modulation options, you can get some very aggressive/unusual sounds out of it.

I don't know where the previous poster got the 6dB bass boost figure from (I don't ever recall hearing it quantified) and I don't even know if the well documented boost actually exists, although I have no reason to doubt it. With or without this boost, it has a bass to die for. So much so that nearly every patch I use tends to have the HPF turned all the way up (unless it's a bass patch).

Oh yeah, and the duo-phonic is very nice, as is the very flexible unison modes."

Note the custom face on the Drehbank which normally looks like this image. Also note the punkdISCO logo in the top shot.

Sexy Back

YouTube via punkdiscoUK. From the people that brought us this.
"Putting the X-Factor into the xBase 999. Major sex appeal + 999 = punkdISCO!
Everything is the 999 plus 777 and 303. Recorded in single take. Should have done some editting but could not work out how. Lots more at www.punkdisco.co.uk."

I Me You

YouTube via punkdiscoUK. NSFW! more punkdisco and http://punkdisco.co.uk/ "Jimmy Page/Robert Plant allegedly took 2 days to write the lyrics to Stairway to Heaven; Leah took 15 minutes to write this track. We believe this speaks volumes!" "All the music is from a 303 and 999 recorded and filmed live; even the strings are from the 999. Tiny amount of post EQ/Comp but other than that, it's raw."

She's watching...

Profile of a Korg MS20 on PunkDisco. Kinda creeped me out. : )

Via dancemachine along with the following:

"here's a track with a lot of ms20 (rev1) drum processing (listen
especially for the s/h, where i pacthed the trigger out of the ESP to
the input of the S/h, so the filter cuttoff changes with each new note)

anyway, i think that dude puts that doll in all his pics to avoid being
ripped-off. but i bet he'll let you post it...."

Me too. Title link takes you to PunkDisco. And... She's watching...

reKon Waldorf Pulse VST Editor

Via punkdISCO on AH. Never saw this before. Really nice interface. Title link takes you there.

Update: Interesting note from PunkdISCO that I didn't really think of at the time I posted this:

"There are dozens of free Pulse editors on pretty much any platform we
care to mention. I only posted this new one as its the first that I know of
that is a VST pluggin giving all the benefits of VSTs (automation, patches
stored with the song, etc) all within your song."

via punkdISCO who brought us this great video:

Korg 900PS Manual Added to the Korg Kornukopia Site

You can find it in the manuals, service documents & schematics and sounds section of korganalogue.net.

Update via Paul of punkdisco:
"If anyone wants to hear what one sounds like, listen to our All Available Space track. It's the main octave line that runs from start to finish. I once spent half a day with a butchered wire from my MS20's CV outs, randomly poking it into anything keyboard related on the 900PS. I was hoping to discover where I could add CV/Gate ins. From memory, I got the pitch working but not the gate (might have been the other way around). CV on a 900PS would be fab! Huge thanks for this Ben.."

Casio HT-700 CZ Analogue Synth with Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Very underrated synth. Very similar sound to CZ synths BUT with analogue filters/VCA/Chorus and crunchy drum machine. [Update: Note the HT-700 used SD Synthesis while the CZ used Phase Distortion similar to Yamaha's FM synthesis] Boxed, as new condition with plastic over the screen:

Analogue filters
Analogue VCAs
Analogue Chorus
Sampled 8-bit drum sounds that resemble the legendary Casio RZ-1 drum machine
Fully programmable drum machine
3 part multitimbral (full control over midi plus from the keyboard)
Same as the HT-3000 but mini keys

Below videos are not mine (and AWFUL audio quality) but they do show what sounds are capable with a few simple mods... Here is a sound demo from the actual synth that is for sale: http://punkdisco.co.uk/misc/misc/audio/demo.mp3"

Under The Side Panel

punkdISCO found this under the side panel of his Korg 900ps. The following are a couple more shots of the inside: one, two. Click the image on the left or the title link for a super sized shot.

The stamps with 58.8.26 is the year in Nengo (Emperor Era), month and day the synth was stamped. 58 would make it 1977? If you know more feel free to comment.

Update via the world of next tuesday in the comments:
""Nengo" is just saying it's a Japanese date, not a Western date. Written properly in English the synth is from the year "Showa 52" (I've seen it abbreviated S52 for instance a lot in Japanese booklets).

I guess the math is 1926+S-1 because there was no year Showa 0. Now "52" is easy to assume as Showa since no recent emperor lived as long as Showa (a.k.a. Hirohito) and the synth has to have either a Showa or Heisei date (1989+H-1), but avoiding confusion you are supposed to add whomever's reign it was or is to the number."
