Rhodes Chroma & ARP 2600 Demo of Sounds

YouTube Published on May 22, 2012 by ricel1992

"Just wanted to make this quick demo of some ARP 2600 sounds for a buyer. If you are looking for a synth that sounds old school and literally can cross into that Close Encounters territory you can't do better than a 2600. The reverb on these synths is absolutely beautiful and sounds great with a guitar through it.

The 2600 is being controlled externally by my Rhodes Chroma through an encore expressionist"

Rhodes Chroma

Published on May 22, 2012 by ricel1992

"Quick sound demo of my Rhodes Chroma that came in the other week. I like how it's predecessor (the 2600) looks on top of it [I think he means successor - the Chroma was ARP's final synth and meant to be their ultimate flagship synth. The project was taken over by Rhodes when ARP went under]. This thing really does sound gorgeous and is amazing at atmospheric type stuff. It also can make some great brass and bass sounds. This one has aftertouch and midi so it is extremely flexible. I don't know why everyone complains about programming this thing so much. Sure it's not like a 2600 with the sliders and patch points right in front of you but it is not like you have to conjure up some magic to program it. It is deep and extremely inspirational."

YouTube Uploaded by ricel1992 on Jan 15, 2011

"First real test of my axon ax 50 with my new minimoog! (run through the re 201 for a little reverb/echo (this minimoog is actually the one that was used by the keyboard player for Phil Collins in 1990 - it can be heard as the bass line for the backing track of all live Sussudios from 1990 till present!)"

In case your wondering - Minimoog Bass and Sunsyn pads through the eml's reverb

Arp 2600 Reborn

YouTube Uploaded by ricel1992 on Nov 16, 2011

"We had our 8 hour repair this past Saturday for the EARS tech mentor program and my project was one of my ARP 2600s and my ARP Sequencer.

The 2600 was completely dead and so when we opened it up last Thursday we saw right away that a resistor 2 caps had blown on the power supply. It ended up being a dead short around the oscillator 3 board so we fixed that up and I soldered in some replacements and remounted the supply. Jeff helped to make sure everything was running and we booted it up for the first time in a while!

Next we looked at my arp sequencer which was stuck running at maximum speed, Jeff flipped it over and saw that there was another dead short for the negative power supply going to the clock of the sequencer so he clipped one of the decoupling caps and it started running fine (guess I should solder in a replacement when I get the chance)! We noticed that the quantized outputs were not putting out signal though so hopefully we can take a look at that this Thursday.

There's a little clip of the sequencer and the 2600 running together at the end.

Listen with headphones or good speakers to really hear the Acidlab Miami (808 sounds)

Phil Collins "Sussudio" Minimoog with MIDI for Auction?

YouTube Uploaded by ricel1992 on Jun 13, 2011

"Little Video Demo for my minimoog D with Studio electronics midi added"

via this auction

"I bought this from the keyboardist for Phil Collins, he told me that he used it to record the live track minimoog bassline for the song Sussudio, it has been the same live track ever since!"

Update: via davidfrank in the comments: "Hi David Frank here. I programmed the sussudio bass line on a oberheim obxa/Dsx/Dmx connected to a minimoog. could have been this "midied"minimoog. It was at townhouse studiosLondon in a programming room by myself while Phil and Hugh Padgham were doing other parts for the album.
Phil had sent me a demo of the song that had an 1/8 note repeating on the root note as the bass line. I changed it to the 16th note riff to make the song more exciting and the track more original sounding. In the process of putting a slide TO the downbeat of the Chorus I tried a slide ON the downbeat instead. Thus the Sussudio bassline. The horn arrangement was done later and used the bass line as it's main motif."

What a Polyphonic Arp 2600/Macbeth M5/Minimoog would sound like

YouTube Uploaded by ricel1992 on Jan 2, 2012

"Hooked up my mono synths with my Encore Expressionist and recorded a little video to show of the sound. I had the Acidlab Miami triggering the ARP Sequencer which was sequencing the filter cutoff (making that rhythmic sound in the background). The glidey/squelchy bass is the minimoog model D and the 4 voice poly is made up of the 2 ARP 2600's and 2 voices from the Macbeth M5 - osc 1 and 3 through filter 1 and oscillator 2 through filter 2. It makes for a rather unsurprisingly fat sound and the expressionist makes it really easy to set everything up (I just need some more long 1/4 cables)! The Acidlab Miami was the drum accompaniment. Anyways, hopefully I can record more soon."

Jammin in the Studio (CS 80 type sounds)

YouTube Uploaded by ricel1992 on Jan 5, 2012

"Wanted to go for a CS 80/Vangelis type sound or at least timbre on this one. Not very good keyboard skills but I make these videos mostly to demo the sounds anyways (I'm a guitarist). I have 2 voices of the poly from the arp 2600's and 2 voices from the Macbeth M5. The minimoog is playing the drone(ish) note, it has the studio electronics mods so it has an extra lfo you can mix in. In this video I used a sawtooth from osc 3 in lo freq and the sine wave from the extra oscillator. Also had the acidlab miami and the roland tr 909 playing along."

Menuet in G Major - Arp 2600, Macbeth M5, Moog Minimoog, Acidlab Miami

YouTube Uploaded by ricel1992 on Jan 2, 2012

"I got an Encore Expressionist for Christmas so I decided to put it to use (controlling the macbeth M5 and both ARP 2600s for a combined 4 voices and then the minimoog through midi. I decided to try it out with J.S. Bach's Menuet in G Major (so that is what you are hearing). The video is a quick run-through of my little studio, sorry for the shaky camera. I'll also upload an mp3 to my soundcloud at http://soundcloud.com/loganrice"

Dorm Room, Arp 2600, Arp Sequencer, and roland tr 909 and 808

YouTube Uploaded by ricel1992 on Nov 12, 2011

"So I've moved back into Columbia for my second year and am just finally getting able to have a real setup in my dorm room! I've been taking the tech mentor program at EARS in nyc on week nights and today we had an 8 hour repair in which Jeff helped me rebuild the power supply of the arp and fix a problem with the arp sequencer's tempo control. Man do 2 ARP 2600's look great stacked on top of each other!

I've got the arp 2600's being sequenced by the arp sequencer which is being driven by the Acidlab Miami pulse (all driven from ableton clock). I've also got the Acidlab doing most of the drum parts and the the roland tr 909 doing some claps and a few hh hits."
