Synthesizer von Gestern (Synths of the Past) II, sealed

via this auction

"Classic hardback book about classic synthesisers, in German, but with loads of superb illustrations - the most beautiful book about synths ever made.

Sealed, brand new. This is Book II, which is bigger than Book I, and includes authoritative text and diagrams and gorgeous photos.

The book starts with an in-depth interview with Oskar Sala, inventor of the Mixtur-Trautonium (used for the entire soundtrack of Hitchcock's 'The Birds'). Fantastic photos of his studio and various Trautoniums.

Other synths and electronic instruments covered in detail include:- Jorgensen Clavioline, ARP 2500, EMS Synthi 100, Moog Sonic Six, Emu modular, EMS Synthi Hi-Fli, ARP Pro Soloist, Steiner-Parker Synthacon, RMI Harmonic Synthesizer, EMS Synthi E, Birotron, PPG 1002, Moog Taurus, Liberation, Prodigy; Roland System 700, Synlab Modular, Yamaha SY1, Oberheim OB-1, Roland SH-7, Steiner EVI, Crumar DS-2, Yamaha CS-30, DX7; Korg Sigma, VC-10, Poly 61, Poly 800; ARP Quadra, Roland RS-505, VP-330, SPV-355, SH-101, TB-303, TR-606, MC-202, Jupiter 6; Fairlight CMI, Realton Variophon, Oberheim OB-Xa, OB-SX, Xpander; Gleeman Pentaphonic, RSF Kobol, Blackbox; Emu Emulator I, DK Synergy, SCI Prophet 600, Prophet T8; EEH Banana, Boehm Soundlab, OSC OSCar.

A beautiful quality coffee-table book - high production values, great illustrations, hardback, and as rare as some of the rarest synths it contains! Still sealed!"

MFOS Music From Outer Space Dual Analog Multimode Filter State Variable

djthomaswhite·80 videos Uploaded on Feb 18, 2008

via this auction

"I call this module the "MFOS Dual Multimode Frequency Modulator" and it is a one-of-a-kind sound module. Amazing sound with very flexible design perfect for MOTM Synthtech, Synthesizers.com or other 5U systems.

Custom made professional analog modular synthesizer module. This is high quality construction intended to last a lifetime. Quality parts throughout:

- 3mm Custom Engraved Aircraft Aluminum Panel
- Stainless Steel PCB bracket
- Sealed Spectrol Cermet Pots
- Sealed Trim Pots on PCB
- Sealed Rotary Switches
- Official Alco Phenolic Knobs
- Switchcraft 112 Jacks
- Flatted Bat Handle Switches
- All IC's are socketed for easy replacement

This also has a variable mix circuit I added to allow incoming Control Voltage signals tone inverted and assigned to each filter with a couple of routing switches.

Two filters. These can be used as separate filters just like Ray Wilson at MOTM designed or as two filters in series as I built them into this module. Each filter is 12dB and using them both in series gives you a 24dB response where you can dial in the frequency of each filter. Other filters with dual sections you may recognize include the Roland Juno-106 and the Korg MS-20. This design by Ray Wilson is Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA) based for warm and character like old Moog designs such as the Moog Source. "

Vintage Optigan Light Organ LOT - Many Original Discs SEALED + Song Books RARE

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Gay 90s Songs in there!

"This is an amazing opportunity to own a fantastic lot of rare, original Optigan discs & song books - all from the early 1970's.

This lot is 25 pieces in total -

12 discs & 13 books.

9 of the discs are in mint condition, STILL SEALED in the original factory shrinkwrap.

(The shrinkwrap of one of the sealed discs has been torn, but the side where the sleeve opens remains intact)

2 of the discs ("Bossa Nova" & "Easy Does it wth Vibes") are opened & appear to be in fantastic condition. The only flaw I could see is a tiny indentation on one of the discs.

There's also another disc (not pictured) that I found in my vinyl collection & am including in this lot. It's in a clear sleeve & appears to be in excellent condition.

The songbooks vary from good to excellent used condition, some yellowing, shelf wear, & a few have minor pen/pencil marks."

ARP 2600 Shots

Title link takes you to some amazing shots of the ARP 2600. Seems like we are on a picture roll. Lots of em coming up lately. I'll try to only post the really interesting ones to keep the noise down. Enjoy. : ) This set came from Jeffrey Needham on AH. And yes it is for sale as well. Info below.

Call me crazy, but I actually like how beat the casing looks on this 2600. Like a comfy pair of jeans.

Notes:
"extras things:
No keyboard (keyboard CV output is now the input)
IEC power plug
CMS designed 4012 sealed VCF
If you care, 2 OSCs are sealed, 1 is not
The sample/hold is sealed, everything else is not
1 spare (unsealed) OCS
SYNC switches on OSC 2 and 3 (both back to 1)
Phil cleaned all the sliders (all of the CMS work orders will come with it)
Phil rebuilt the power supply.
This is different from REPLACING the power supply with a switching one.

2 1/4" jacks added to get the audio out (barely visible in master shot)

Just give me a shout with questions.

It is located in the San Francisco Bay Area (south bay), California
I assume most people in the world know where that is, but don't want to be
too North American centric.

Vintage ARP/Tonus VCO, VCF, Noise, S/H, waveshaper Encapsulated Submodules

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the seller: "I am selling some vintage ARP encapsulated submodules. I bought them in 1972 and started to build a simple synthesizer. I did breadboard them and got them working, but life happened and that's as far as it went. They have been in a sealed box for many years. These are the first generation of ARP submodules, where the whole guts are sealed in epoxy. They are AS- IS, but I do believe they are still functional. If there's a questionable one, I'd guess it's the 4017 VCO, since I just had my 2600 cleaned up and the VCO had failed. I will include the diagrams from Tonus how to hook them up. I paid $470 for these back in the day."

Electronic Music Laboratories Modular Restoration Project

via George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular: "This is my Electronic Music Laboratories sequencer. It is actually a compilation of assorted EML synthesizers I own that I stuffed into a common case.

In 1978, I was tired of trying to stack all of these and decided to compile them into one unit. At the time, I owned: The Electrocomp 400 sequencer with the 2x16 sequencer panel, The EML 200 "Modular" And, the EML 300 controller. I also own an EML 101 and an EML Poly-Box but, they didn't stack. I built the case out of 1/2" plywood with wood mounting rails and stapled black vinyl around the case. The case measures 4' wide x 3.5' high x 1' deep. Since I had a couple of extra holes, I ordered another 2x16 sequencer panel and another EML 300 without a case to fill it up. After 32 years, I've decided to refurbish this compilation and give it a new house.

The plan: Besides the panels in the case, I also have the EML circuit modules that I had purchased from EML in order to build a 'proof of concept' Syntar in 1979 [Update: see this post]. I also have a few left over 3-octave Pratt-Read keyboards from my old Syntar stock along with some old Syntar circuit boards. I want to determine what I have that is still working or, easy to fix. Once I have an inventory, I'm going to design a modular panel to fit between the 300's and the top portion and incorporate the working modules into the system. I'm also going to add the two 3-octave keyboards. Below those, I will put my 88-key M-audio MIDI controller keyboard and add a couple of MMM MIDI/CV controllers. Anything that I feel I need to fill out the signal paths and patching structure I'll just pull from my DIY module stock.

After the "modular" section is defined, I'll refurbish, re-cap the existing EML panels, calibrate them and clean/lube all of the panel controls that aren't sealed. Any sealed pots that are noticeably bad in an audio path will be replaced with something newer.

It should be a fun refurbishing project.

To be continued…."

George Mattson"

SND FB-14 Extended Range Fixed Filter Bank

via this Noisebug auction
"special audio filterbank with coils and discrete class A circuitry

- classic class-A circuit design using coils, which have to be hand-made and thus are costly, but sound just so much better. Only 4 transistors in signal path, 2 of them being selected germanium types, which behave somewhat similar to vacuum tubes.
- 14 bands with 2-pole-filters. Center frequencies are 35, 65, 105, 160, 240, 360, 540, 800, 1200, 1800, 2700, 4000, 7000 and 12000 Hz.
- The choice of the frequencies in (nearly) fifth intervals avoids a false ´tonality´ (that is an unwanted emphasis or attenuation of the same musical tone in different octaves) that can be found on all octave, semi-octave, and one-third-octave filterbanks.
- The control range per band is +/- 20 dB (!). This corresponds to a ratio of 1/100 compared to 1/16 (+/- 12dB) available on almost all other equalizers and filterbanks. So even drastic sound manipulations are possible that normally require two chained EQ´s. The q-factor of the filters gradually increases from 0.7 at +/-10 dB to 6 at +/- 20 dB.
- The individual filters are not decoupled from each other. Thus all kinds of - wanted - phase changes and cancellations occur. Normally this circuit design has the disadvantage of a very non-linear control curve (all relevant changes happen within a few degrees at either end of the pot´s turn). To compensate this, sealed conductive plastic pots with a special curve are used, custom-made for us by ALPS.
- Input gain and output level controls. Input gain can be set from - 20 to +20dB. Due to its special circuitry, overdriving the unit produces much more interesting results than standard rc-filters using op-amps.
- Frequency range 20-50000Hz +/- 1.5dB, Signal-to-noise ratio 90dB.
- 1/4” jacks for input and output. Internal ground-lift for separating chassis and audio ground. A special summing Y-cable can be ordered for connecting stereo sources.
- Bypass (using a sealed relay) through frontpanel push-button and automatically when power is disconnected ("hard-wire bypass").
- 19”, 1 unit, depth (behind frontpanel): 58mm + plugs, external power supply."
