RIP Jean-Jacques Perrey 1929-2016

The image to the left may be a little blurry, but it comes from the one time I actually got to see Jean-Jacques Perrey live with Dana Countryman, back in 2006. I took that photo. That was one of the rare times I could sum up an experience in one word: magical. Well maybe two: magical, and joyful. That may sound cliche to some, but it is 100% accurate, and I do have to say, with the absolute upmost respect, Jean-Jacques Perrey (and Dana Countryman) put on one of the funnest shows I've been too. The man brought absolute joy to life. When I was a kid I had no idea I was listening to his tunes while watching Disneland's Main Street Electrical parade! He was a pioneer of electronic music that brought humor and playfulness to his music throughout his career. I still remember his pet elephant (you'll need to go through numerous posts here on MATRIXSYNTH to find it. :) As you'll see his presence influenced many posts here on MATRIXSYNTH over the years. His main instrument was the Ondes Martenot.

Image credit: Mal Meehan, in via Dana Countryman, who had the following to say (Update: you can find his full words here - do take the time to read it for a fascinating bit of synth history):

"My dear friend and mentor Jean Jacques Perrey passed away today, November 4th, 2016. His illness came on quickly, and he did not suffer long, for which I’m happy. I’m extremely sad that I’ll never see him again, but I have been playing some of his happiest music today, and it immediately cheered me up. I know that’s what he would want --- for everyone to be happy, and not to be sad."

He will be missed, but his music and memories will continue to bring joy to people for years to come. He brought so much joy to the world. Thank you Jean-Jacques Perrey!

Update: Dana Countryman wrote a longer piece on Jean-Jacques Perrey here. Do take the time to read it. From that piece:

"For those who don’t realize it, Jean-Jacques rst started recording electronic music in 1952, long before the Moog synthesizer was rst made for sale in 1967. Relocating from Paris to New York City, JJ actu- ally owned and recorded with the second Moog ever produced, and with his musical partner Gershon Kingsley, they released their rst Moog album -- almost two years before Wendy Carlos released her rst Moog album. Jean-Jacques was truly the pioneer of popular electronic music.

His crazy, happy music has been heard everywhere from commercials, to Sesame Street - in hip-hop songs, in dance remixes and most famously, for decades in the delightful featured music in Disneyland’s 'Main Street Electrical Parade'. In recent years, his music has even made appearances on the Simpsons, and on Comedy Central’s 'South Park'."

Update2: one more sent my way via @bronwenjones:

"March of the Robots" on Ed Sullivan show - music by Jean-Jacques Perrey

YouTube via happymoogman

"Here is a rare clip of Sesame Street' Big Bird, together with the June Taylor Dancers on the Ed Sullivan Show, from 1969. The music is "March of the Robots", by Jean-Jacques Perrey. The clip uses Perrey's original Vanguard Records' recording, but interestingly, later in the song, the CBS Studio Orchestra joins in!
Hope you enjoy this!"

GForce / Oberheim OB-E - Sound Bank '79

video upload by Polydata

"Drawing from the earliest days of polyphonic synthesizers, Sound Bank ‘79 for the GForce / Oberheim OB-E finds its inspiration in synthesizer music found in documentaries and library music from the late 70’s and early 80’s.

A bank comprised of 40 patches for instant inspiration. The goal was to highlight the raw analog tone and organic behavior of this instrument, primarily working within the constraints of the original Oberheim 8-Voice. This plug-in sounds fantastic. If you looking for the SEM sound, especially the polyphonic SEM sound, this is the only game in town without spending five figures.

Link:
polydata.bigcartel.com

After payment, you will receive the file in your email within 24 hours. Effects have also been programed for each patch, though they are saved in the "off" state. Recorded with no external processing - what you hear is all from the plug-in.

Stevie Wonder - Superstition live on Sesame Street

YouTube via RSLweblog

"It doesn't get much better than this.... I can't imagine a better feel good song than this one! Check out the REST OF THE VIDEOS in this collection! Stop by my music webpage (Ryan's Smashing Life) and say hello!"

Some interesting notes via Malcom Cecil on the AH list:
"I engineered and co-produced Superstition and still have the Master Track Sheets, Work Orders and Tape Legends from all of the recordings that I made with Stevie between 1971 and 1975.

The 8 tracks of clavinet are actually 4 stereo pairs, however, there are two very important timed stereo slap back tape tracks that Stevie was listening to while he played the first pass. They bwere created on a two track Ampex with a varispeed.

I recorded them because they are an important intrigal component of the musical line. I timed the slap to be drum track to create the funky feel. I only used the first stereo pair of clavinet tracks that were recorded with those slap back tracks in the final mix. If your tracks are numbered those clavinet tracks are 7 & 8 and the associated stereo slap tracks are on tracks 6 & 9 but if not you can hear which they - you can always listen to the mix!

Stevie recorded the drums (solo) first, then the cavinet/slap echo tracks and then the TONTO bass. Then he put down a reference vocal with "Lal-as" for words (except for "very Superstitious"). The words didn't get written until about two weeks later and the horns were added much later

I am very surprised to hear that that you have copies of the original tracks! I guarded those masters with my life but I gave them all to Stevie when we stopped working together in 1975.

I guess his security system 'aint what it was when I was with him - but then a lot changed when I left.

Peace,
Malcolm Cecil"

Sequential Prophet Rev 2 - Bi-timbral Sound Bank

video upload by Polydata

"An exploration of stacked patches with the Sequential / Dave Smith Instruments Prophet Rev 2. I've often found bi-timbral patches cheesy, uninspiring, or just not useful. I sought to create this bank to show how powerful and beautiful patch stacking can be. It needs to be approached with care - not just slapping two sounds together, but carefully tailoring each sound to complement each other and blend into a single unit that is greater than the sum of it's parts. Nuance is key.

30 carefully designed bi-timbral patches for instant inspiration. Recorded completely dry with no external effects or processing.

After payment, you will receive the SysEx file in your email within 24 hours. Loads into User Bank 3 by default, slots 1-30.

AudioLemon

Title link takes you to AudioLemon a relatively new blog on gear and electronic music.

"I teach Music Technology in a small college in Ireland so I mostly use this just to inform my students about gear, electronic music and things I am interested in. Also I do a half hour show on the radio about Music Tech news so I update the website with things I talk about on the radio (for example free software). I try where possible to relate my blogs to Ireland so I talk about IMRO (irish royalty collection agencies) and Irish electonic events like DEAF. I always direct my students to your website [Matrixsynth] as a great source of information."

You'll find a ton of great content currently up including this Sesame Street classic possibly featuring the Minimoog for audio. I actually remember it!
