Software Klee Updates

via dnigrin in this electro-music.com thread.

"I thought I would give an update on where things stand with the new v2 version of the software - most of the new features I will include are coded, and now I am just wrestling with a few bugs and details, and then on to beta testing. I also have to fully update the docs. Here's the listing of what's coming in this version, as well as a few screenshots...

* new VST instrument hosting - route MIDI externally, or internally to virtual instruments (or mix of both) * new A-B output * LEDs to switches, for A, B, or A&B * constrain output notes to specific scale * output chord based on root note - user can specify up to 6 pitches in chord, plus root note * can reverse direction to R to L, instead of L to R * external load via MIDI or audio input * MIDI CC control for virtually all UI controls I plan to demo this version at the upcoming Analogue Heaven Northeast event on April 25: http://stretta.com/ahne/2010/ Also - one little tidbit that made my day: for the 80's Industrial fans out there, cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy is a software Klee user (and hardware too) - see his quote at http://defectiverecords.com/klee/index2.html" click here for all posts featuring the software Klee including video.

Software Klee Step Sequencer

via this electro-music.com thread
"This is a cross-platform (Mac and Windows -- sorry, no Linux) software Klee. It was created with the input and testing of several Klee "veterans", including Scott Stites himself, Mosc, State Machine, Uncle Krunkus and EdisonRex. It includes virtually all major functions from the hardware Klee, and adds many new ones:

• MIDI output to any hardware or software synth
• Internal or MIDI clock
• 10 preset slots for instant recall of parameters
• Presets can be saved to and loaded from disk
• Built-in clock divide capability
• Synchronous load - loading of pattern happens on clock pulses, and not in between
• Load on Play feature to allow for loading of pattern each time clock started
• MIDI-controllable baseline note
• Custom definable note range allows for alternative scales

It should be available within the next few weeks hopefully. And although I can't make EM09 next week, others who are attending will be able to demonstrate it, if it's not available publicly by that time...

M185 software step sequencer - work in progress

YouTube via dnigrin | January 28, 2011 |

"New software step sequencer, inspired by Ryk's M185 hardware DIY sequencer. Built with Cycling 74's Max/MSP. Work in progress, not done yet..."

Update via Dan on the AH list:
"To address the avalanche of questions I've gotten since -- fueled by the success of my software Klee (http://defectiverecords.com/klee), this is a software recreation of a step sequencer inspired by RYK's M-185 hardware DIY step sequencer - some examples and more info:

http://sys100m.org/viewtopic.php?t=154&sid=539defbded7364e82a6678c84f35daca
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vK1PoQffhjk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Swi2fNeNCuE

Basically, this sequencer works by advancing the pattern through (up to) 8 stages. Each stage can have have anywhere from 1 to 8 clock pulses that are advanced through. Each stage has a note value. The stage operates in 1 of 4 possible gate modes: Mute, Single, Multi, and Held. In mute mode, the stage is silent for however many clocks it is set for. In single mode, the note triggers for the first clock of the stage, and then it is silent for the remainder of clocks (if any) in the stage. In multi mode, the note is retriggered for each clock of the stage. Finally, in held mode, a single note is held for the duration of all of the clock pulses of the stage.

As Mark Rivera said a while back on AH, the M185 is "... the only alternate concept to x0x, knob-row, and arpeggiator styles. It's all three but none of them?"

That's the basic idea. Of course, there's details - you can change the clock pulses from anywhere between whole notes to 1/32nd notes. You can change the gate duration times. You can change the direction of the sequence through the stages - forward, backward, ping pong, and random. You can control the total number of clock pulses in a pattern, irrespective of the number of stages.

The software version will have most of the features of the hardware sequencer, plus more (still being finalized!). It will work with MIDI rather than control voltages/triggers. It will send MIDI to any MIDI device (hardware or software), and will work with either an internal clock or MIDI clock. It can also host a VST instrument plugin. It will save and load presets.

Mac and PC, cheap like all of my software. I hope to have it ready within the next 1-2 months, real life notwithstanding!

Roland MC-4 Hack demo - Vivaldi Four Seasons, Spring Movement

video by dnigrin

"Roland MC-4 playing 4 track sequence of Spring Movement of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, programmed using MC-4 Hack, software created by Defective Records Software. https://defectiverecords.com/mc4hack"

The MC-4 is sitting on an Analogue Solutions Colossus no less. Apparently the video is of Jesper Kouthoofd, CEO of Teenage Engineering.

dnigrin is the man behind Defective Records, who brought us the Fauxmo Ensoniq Fizmo editor / librarian, Cyclic sequencer in collaboration with Mutable Instruments, the M-185 software sequencer, and Klee software sequencer. You can find them all in various posts here.

Roland MC-4 Hack made it's first appearance here on MATRIXSYNTH on August 18, 2011.

"MC-4 Hack" for the Roland MC-4 Sequencer?

Defective Records is contemplating an MC-4 Hack similar to the MC-202 Hack (see this post). If you are interested leave a comment here or on Defective Records here.

"Over the last 14 years that I've had MC-202 Hack available in its various versions, I've repeatedly gotten requests to create an "MC-4 Hack" for the Roland MC-4 sequencer. It of course makes perfectly logical sense, as the sequencers in the two devices are very similar, and from roughly the same time period in Roland's history."

Note Defective Records also brought us the software Klee sequencer and M-185 software sequencer. See the new Defective Records label below for more.

EChucK Miniature Module Synth

via Inventor on this electro-music.com thread:
"Hi, I get positive responses when I mention this project so I thought it would be worth doing. It is a simple, inexpensive, miniature synthesizer. Instead of being rack-mounted with panels and jacks and cables, it exists as little bitty circuit boards that get hooked together by wire.

Circuits will be very simple one-chip dealies, classic opamp and 555 type circuits, passive and active filters. Pots are thumbwheel type and switches are DIP switches or similar. Interconnect is with mini-screw terminals or to save cost, soldered wire.

The boards may be arranged in any configuration physically. If you want to make a ring of three oscillators, well, that would look like a ring. You could make a BuckyBall or a Christmas Tree with LED modules that responded to microphone input, flashing the lights in response for example. So the system is it's own block diagram, physically in 3D space.

In exchange for super low-cost and 3D structure, we give up precision and quality. This is not the synth that you create your masterpiece on, it is the synth that you play with your kids on. Or make a gift for your loved ones. It's a poor man's synth, so to speak.

So I was advised to write this post to evaluate interest in the project. I've just created two of the initial modules and I am having fun with it, but the real fun is in collaboration and working as a team. I really enjoy the community spirit of electro-music.com and I'd like to participate in this way. Oh, the boards would be sold through electro-music.com just like the klee, etc.

So what do you think?"

Followed by:
"I have just thrown together a quick and slightly humorous little web page with a description of EChucK plus links to the first two boards: a 9V power board and a microphone input board. The page is here:

http://www.freedomodds.com/music/echuck/index.html

Have a look, have a laugh, and enjoy thinking about the concept, whether you are interested enough to participate or not. Oh, and thanks for clicking on the poll above, that helps."

Excerpt for the archives:
"EChucK is Born!

Conceived in the mind of a genius paranoid schizophrenic (that's me), EChucK was born in mid 2008. EChucK is a very inexpensive modular synthesizer that breaks all the traditional synthesizer rules!

Rather than mount expensive, super-accurate circuits in a rack and patch it together with connectors and cables, in EChucK we connect little bitty circuit boards with classic analog and digital circuits together using stripped wires. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars US for each module, EChucK modules will tend to be around ten dollars US or so each.

Because of the distributed nature of EChucK modules, we can build geometric structures like chains, rings, BuckyBalls, or Christmas trees - the possibilities are endless. In addition to having a life of its own, EChucK modules can connect to the audio i/o of your computer for interfacing to any software you like including ChucK, iTunes, and Audacity. You can even send out audio to a guitar amp or stereo for loud jammin' tunes - or your studio equipment for that matter.

EChucK is also inexpensive enough to be sold as a toy for young teens and older kids, plus it brings out the kid in adults as well. This is the main page for EChucK, see below for links to the open source hardware and software that fun-loving enthusiasts have contributed for you to enjoy. It's all free (protected by the GNU General Public License) except the hardware, which is low in cost. So read on and enjoy EChucK, it's a blast!"
