Sonicstate.com Airs Top 20 Synths Show On Valentines Day

Just in time to snuggle up and watch with your loved one!

"Sonic State will soon be streaming a new IPTV video show called The Top 20 Greatest Synths. The show is based around interviews with synth users and collectors like Will Gregory (Goldfrapp), Roger O’Donnell (The Cure), Ade Utley (Portishead) and Howard Jones (Howard Jones) and features footage, photos and facts about the greatest electronic instruments ever made.

”We’ve based the chart on the votes that have been coming in plus a bit of poetic license to include some outsiders, underdogs and a few surprises!”

Sonic founder Nick Batt and former BBC producer Simon Power have been pleased with the response to previews of the show already available to watch at Sonic.

“It’s basically an excuse to rant about all-things-synth in a show that’s shamelessly nostalgic about electronic music and keyboards with knobs on.”

The Jupiter 8, Korg M1, Yamaha CS80, JV10-80, SH101 and Odyssey all get featured on the chart as well as some youngsters like the Access Virus, Dave Smith’s Evolver, the Alesis Andromeda and the Korg Oasys.

“We know not everyone will be happy with the positioning on the chart, but there’s enough in the show’s to keep everyone smiling.”

The Top 20 Synths will be presented as eight 10 minute videocasts posted once a fortnight on Sonic and YouTube and at various other outlets. Then the programme will be posted in its entirety at the end of the run.

“There may be a DVD version available and we also have some TV interest. But that’s for the future!”

With their recent excellent Winter NAMM (the largest musical instrument trade show) video coverage and weekly Sonic TALK podcasts, it certainly looks like Sonic are staying ahead of the game.

“Sonic are working on a lot of new ideas for audio and visual downloads. 2007 is gonna be great!”

And what’s number one on the Greatest Synths chart?

"Wave Junction is a collaboration between Sonicstate.com and coding genius Phelan Kane of Meta Function. Based on the free Mono Junction synth they released early 2017, Wave Junction is a four voice hybrid paraphonic synthesizer with 2 multi-wave oscillators, including wavetable synthesis, FM and Superwaves. Wave Junction Filter Routing

"In this video, Meta Function demonstrate filter routing on the Wave Junction, a Max For Live synthesizer developed in partnership with Sonicstate.com.

The Wave Junction features three independent state variable filters, each with independent controls. Using filtering, you can remove frequencies fed from the raw harmonics of the oscillators and the noise sources in a technique akin to sculpture. Each filter shares similar controls that allow a myriad of features allowing for complex timbre shaping. Two of the filters allow complex routing of both oscillators and both noise sources. A third master filter allows adaptation of the overall timbre produced by the Wave Junction.

In this video oscillator one is routed to state variable filter one, configure as a 24dB 4 pole lowpass resonant filter. Oscilaltor two is routed to state varaiable filter two operating with a 24db 4 pole high pass resonant response. This creates an interesting bandpass mix of both oscillators. The balance of each filter is tweaked before state variable filter three is engaged that uses a resonant 24dB 4 pole transistor ladder response. Finally the modualtion matrix is used to route LFO 1 to the cutoff frequency of state variable filter 1, LFO 2 to the cutoff frequency of state variable filter 2 and LFO 3 to the cutoff frequency of state variable filter 3.

"We take a look at the new Uno Synth Pro X from IK Multimedia - rather than a fully new instrument, this is an update for their Uno Synth Pro Desktop which we really enjoyed when we took a look. The X is only available in this form and adds a whole lot of extra UI and physical controls to ultimately the same (or very similar) synth engine.
