iPad Scottish Bagpipes Apps

YouTube via tradlessons — June 13, 2010 —

"Bagpipes", "Border Pipes", and "Small Pipes" are authentic sounding sets of Scottish bagpipes for the iPad that are played just like the real instrument.

These apps are the only truly realistic Scottish bagpipes available for the iPad on the iTunes App store.

In the video, "Bagpipes" is played first (natural background), then "Border Pipes" (red tint background), and finally "Small Pipes" (blue tint background).

The sounds are provided by ePipes in Glasgow, Scotland, and are based on extremely high quality studio recordings of some of the finest instruments available.

To learn more about ePipes and their fine virtual piping instruments and controllers, please visit:

http://www.epipes.co.uk

All three apps use chanter fingerings based on those used for the Highland pipes. All of the standard piping ornaments are possible.

The left half of the chanter is for the "top" hand, the right half is the "bottom" hand.

The bar at the bottom center is the left thumb hole that is on the back of a real chanter.

Touch the 'i' icon at the upper right corner of the main screen to show/hide the on-screen volume controls. All settings are saved and restored the next time the app is run.

Touch the drones in the background painting to start/stop the drones.

Play along with tunes in your iPad's music library by starting a track using the iPad iTunes app, then launching the app. Adjust the chanter and drone volume by touching the 'i' icon and then using the on-screen volume controls.

Preview of Bending in Uilleann-B Version 1.2 for the iPad

YouTube via tradlessons — May 08, 2010 —

"Just finishing up testing an update to the iPad Uilleann piping apps that will add true per-hole pitch bending as an option.

Here's a few short tune snippets showing the feature in action.

The feature will also be in the 1.3 update to the concert pitch version.

This release will be out towards the end of May, in time for the worldwide launch of the iPad, currently only shipping in the USA."

"AirPipes" - iPad Irish Bagpipes/Flute/Whistle WiFi MIDI Control Surface

YouTube via tradlessons — April 17, 2010 —

"AirPipes is a WiFi-based wireless MIDI Irish Bagpipes/Flute/Whistle control surface for the iPad.

The chanter fingerings are based on those used for the Uilleann pipes and will also be immediately familiar to Irish pennywhistle and flute players.

This app supports two independent wireless MIDI channels, emulating the operation of the drones and chanter of a half set of Uilleann pipes.

The app doesn't produce any sound itself, it is designed for controlling hardware or software VST-style MIDI synthesizers via a WiFi connection to a Windows or Mac OS X based computer.

Multiple iPads can run the app on the same wireless network, each sending messages on its own set of MIDI channels to the hardware or software synthesizer.

To play the chanter, place your fingers over the holes on the two halves of the chanter. The left side represents the "top" hand, the right side is the "bottom" hand.

Touch the drone puck to start/stop the drones.

Touch the green bar on the left side with your left little finger to play the notes one octave higher.

Touch the blue bar at the bottom left center with your left thumb to play the second octave "Back-D" selectable on either a press or release.

Touch the red bar at the bottom right center with your right thumb to stop the chanter sound for staccato techniques.

Touch the purple bar on the lower right with your right little finger to bend the pitch or play finger vibrato.

Rotate the iPad to Portrait orientation to see the fingering chart. Rotate back to Landscape orientation to play.

On the fingering chart, you may touch the blue Back-D bar image to toggle between whether the bar on the main screen plays the second-octave D note on a touch (default) or release (matches real Uilleann pipes chanter).

Also on the fingering chart, you may toggle between "Loose" and "Strict" closed chanter modes by touching the red bar. "Loose" closed chanter mode (default) stops the sound whenever the red bar is pressed on the main screen. "Strict" mode only stops the sound when the red bar is pressed and all the holes are covered and matches the real Uilleann chanter. This mode is used for staccato piping techniques. When in "Strict" mode sample attacks are faster when single holes are uncovered.

For students of the Uilleann pipes, the app supports nearly all of the alternate fingerings for most notes and can be used as a real practice chanter for the instrument. All 128 possible fingerings have been mapped as closely as possible to match the real instrument.

You may select the MIDI channel, attack velocity and volume for the chanter and drones independently using the sliders at the top of the screen.

The entire range may be transposed up or down up to one octaves (zero transpose is "C") in semitone increments using the chanter and drone transpose sliders.

All MIDI settings are saved when the app quits and restored the next time it is run.

Touch the '!' icon at the lower left to quiet any "stuck" notes if they occur.

AirPipes requires two pieces of software to do its job. The first is the AirPipes app itself, running on your iPad.

The other is a small free open-source DSWiFiMIDI server application that you run on your PC or Mac before launching AirPipes.

The server application receives the MIDI messages from the app via WiFi, and sends them along to either an external MIDI interface or a loopback MIDI driver to talk to software synthesizers running on the same computer.

Please read the instructions below for information on downloading and installing the open-source DSMIDIWiFi server application for your system.

For the most reliable performance with the lowest possible latency, I highly recommend that the PC or Mac should be on a wired network. The computer and wireless gateway that the iPad is connected to must be on the same network.

To get the full benefit from the app, you should be familiar with the use of MIDI control surfaces, hardware and/or software VST synthesizers.

If you have any concern about the compatibility of the app with your own MIDI setup, please try any of the other free WiFi MIDI apps on the store that use DSMIDIWiFi as a WiFi to MIDI bridge before purchasing AirPipes.

You may play along with tunes in your iPad's music library by starting a track using the iPad iTunes app, then launching AirPipes.

AirPipes 1.3 Highland Chanter Fingerings Demo

YouTube via tradlessons | June 24, 2010 | 1:43

"AirPipes is a wireless MIDI bagpipes control surface for the iPad.

All the sounds you hear in the video are from external devices being controlled by the iPad over WiFi. The app does not make any sound on its own. The app is extremely responsive and has nearly zero latency controlling the external MIDI devices.

Version 1.3 adds an option for Scottish Highland chanter fingerings. Previously, the app only supported Uilleann chanter fingerings, which are quite different.

Here are two examples of using the new Highland fingering option, the first controlling the "Studio Piper" Software VST synthesizer available from:

http;//www.epipes.co.uk

The second example shows controlling a Roland JV-1080 hardware synthesizer set to an ethnic flute patch.

Version 1.3 will be a free update to all current owners of AirPipes.

BlowPipes - Scottish Highland Bagpipes for the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad

YouTube via tradlessons | February 11, 2011 |

"BlowPipes is the best-sounding and easiest-to-play set of mouth-blown Scottish Highland Bagpipes available for the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad.

The drone and chanter sounds are provided by ePipes in Glasgow, Scotland, and are high quality per-note studio recordings of a world-class set of Great Highland Bagpipes.

Play a melody on the chanter by touching the holes while blowing into the microphone on your device or wired headset.

Touch the drone puck image to switch the drones on and off.

Touch the 'i' icon at the bottom center to bring up the settings page. Here you can adjust the blowing sensitivity as well as the balance between the drones and chanter.

You may also select between Top (iPod Touch 4G, iPad) or Bottom (iPhone) microphone location for your device.

No microphone? No problem! You can also play the chanter without blowing, just set the microphone location selector on the settings page to Off. Play the notes by just touching the chanter holes. In this mode, once you touch a hole, the chanter plays continuously just like a real Scottish Highland chanter. To stop the chanter playing, start and stop the drones.

The Flip switch on the settings page toggles between high/low and low/high note order on the chanter.

On the settings page, touch the ePipes logo to visit their website, or touch the TradLessons logo to learn more about my other music apps."

iPad MIDI Melodeon 2.0 Core MIDI Demo

Published on Oct 28, 2012 by tradlessons

"Here's a demo of upcoming version 2.0 of my MIDI Melodeon app for iPad with CoreMIDI support. Supports both B/C and D/G style layouts. The port from the old DSMI interface was trivial, took less than an hour. DSMI really isn't supported anymore so all future versions will be CoreMIDI based. I'll also be porting the Cyborg GCF three-row app to use CoreMIDI as well. Once I have a chance to test the new code on all the various iPad models, I'll submit the update to Apple."

"Flautina" - Flute Concertina for the iPhone/iPod Touch

YouTube via tradlessons | October 06, 2010

"Flautina is a two-octave flute played like an English Concertina.

It is very easy to play, extremely responsive, and sounds very authentic.

The sounds are recorded from my personal 1857 Metzler wooden flute.

The chromatic range is from D4 to C#6.

Touch the '?' icon to show the names of the notes on the buttons.

Touch the 'i' icon to bring up the settings page. You can also visit the app support website by touching the Tradlessons logo on this page.

You can play along with the music on your iPhone/iPod Touch by starting the track using the iPod app, then launching Flautina.

When Charles Wheatsone designed the English concertina, he set it up to match sheet music, the right side is the notes between the lines and the left side is the notes on the lines.

Because English Concertinas play the same note both on a push or a pull of the bellows, it is a very easy instrument to play on the iPhone or iPod Touch.

You simply touch the buttons on the screen to play the notes. The spacing is exactly the same as the real instrument.

To play, hold the iPhone or iPod Touch between your thumb and little fingers of both hands, exactly like a real English Concertina, and press the buttons with your index and middle fingers. Scales alternate between the fingers of the right hand. Notes are higher in pitch as you move from the outside to the middle of the screen.

Flautina runs on the iPhone and iPod Touch."

Finger vibrato may be done with the middle finger of the right hand on most notes. The amount of vibrato is adjustable.

Touch the 'i' icon at the upper left corner of the main screen to show/hide the volume and vibrato controls. All settings are saved and restored the next time the app is run.

Touch the '?' icon at the upper right corner of the main screen to show/hide the fingering chart. The app provides two octaves of the D scale, plus C and F natural.

"MIDI Melodeon" - Demo #2 - iPad Wireless MIDI Button Accordion / Melodeon Control Surface

YouTube via tradlessons | November 14, 2010

"'MIDI Melodeon' is a WiFi-based wireless Button Accordion / Melodeon MIDI control surface for the iPad.

MIDI Melodeon doesn't produce any sound on it own, it is designed for controlling hardware or software VST-style MIDI synthesizers via a WiFi connection to a Windows or Mac OS X based computer.

The button layout is identical to the real instrument and, and the built-in note guide makes it easy to learn to play!

Touch the buttons with the fingers on your right hand to play. Buttons light up in green when touched.

Multiple buttons may be pressed at the same time to make chords.

This style of accordion plays different notes depending on whether you are pushing or pulling on the bellows.

Touch the anywhere in the bellows image at the top of the screen for PUSH notes, lift your finger for PULL notes.

The PUSH/PULL indicator shows the current bellows direction. Also, the sides of the bellows light up tracking the bellows motion

You may slide your fingers between the buttons.

Touch the MIDI connector icon to show the MIDI controls.

Using the controls, you may set the overall instrument MIDI volume, MIDI channel (1-8), key attack velocity, and transposition (+/- 12 semitones).

Select between B/C or D/G based layout. Other common tunings can be achieved by setting the transposition control.

For example, for C#/D tuning, select the B/C layout and set a +2 transposition. For G/C tuning, select the D/G layout and set a +5 transposition.

Touch the '?' icon to show the base layout note names for each button (without transposition).

Multiple iPads can run MIDI Melodeon on the same wireless network, each sending messages on its own MIDI channel to the hardware or software synthesizer.

All settings are saved when the app exits.

MIDI Melodeon requires two pieces of software to do its job. The first is the MIDI Melodeon app itself, running on your iPad.

The other is a small free open-source DSWiFiMIDI server application that you run on your PC or Mac before launching MIDI Melodeon.

The server application receives the MIDI messages from MIDI Melodeon via WiFi, and sends them along to either an external MIDI interface or a loopback MIDI driver to talk to software synthesizers running on the same computer.

Please read the instructions below for information on downloading and installing the open-source DSMIDIWiFi server application for your system.

For the most reliable performance with the lowest possible latency, I highly recommend that you connect the PC or Mac to the wireless access point that will be used by the iPad via a wired ethernet cable rather than use wireless for both the computer and the iPad. The computer and wireless gateway that the iPad is connected to must be on the same network.

To get the full benefit from MIDI Melodeon, you should be familiar with the use of MIDI control surfaces, hardware and/or software VST synthesizers."

ConcertinaXL - iPad 30-Button Anglo C/G Concertina

YouTube via tradlessons — May 01, 2010 — "ConcertinaXL is a 30-button Jeffries-style C/G Anglo Concertina for the iPad.

This video is of the upcoming 1.1 update which adds the optional drone and tremolo features.

Anglo concertinas are commonly used for playing traditional Irish dance tunes, and is a much-favored instrument in County Clare, Ireland.

The Anglo concertina is diatonic, meaning the instrument plays a different note for each button depending on whether you are pushing or pulling on the bellows.

In the app, to play, place the iPad on your leg and simply tip the iPad to the left for a bellows push note, or to the right for a bellows pull note, and press a button.

The PUSH/PULL display on the top of the screen shows which direction the bellows is moving.

You may reverse the bellows while pushing a button simply by tipping in the opposite direction.

Multiple buttons (up to 5) may be pressed at the same time to play chords.

Note guide (touch the 'i' icon in the center) shows the note names in realtime for each button when pushed or pulled.

Adjust the tilt sensitivity and volume using the sliders at the top of the screen. All settings are saved when the app exits.

Touch the Uilleann drone puck image to enable/disable a D-drone. The drone volume may be independently adjusted.

Touch in the diamond area at the bottom of the screen to do tremolo effects.

The button layout and spacing for the iPad exactly matches a real standard 30-button Jeffries-style instrument.

Uses extremely high-quality audio samples recorded from a high-end Anglo C/G concertina.

Up to 5 buttons may be pressed at the same time to make chords."
