The Basement Studio PPG Waveterm C Project

http://www.basement-studio.co.uk/ppg.htm
"The above picture is a Waveterm-B. This unit links to a keyboard to form a powerful sound development system. Although sound editing has now become very affordable and many packages are available, this unit offered not just sample editing but Fourier transforms. One could take a sine wave and generate complex waveforms which could be added into a wavetable allowing a sound to travel through many different waveforms.

A project was started some years ago at The Basement Studio to recreate the same functions on a PC." You can find more details at The Basement Studio.

via Steamy Vicks in the comments of this post on Chezz Media and their Waveterm D emulation.
Also see the PPG Wave 2.2 / 2.3 / EVU Simulator and of course the Waldorf PPG Wave v2 - note there are more posts if you search for Waldorf PPG, but you'll need to weed through all the Wave and XT posts mentioning PPG, the source of the PPG wavetables in Waldorf synths of course.

"Just a quick demo song I made on the Waldorf PPG Wave V2 VST using Logic Audio V5 on the PC.
It's an ok plug-in, nothing great but not bad as for emulating the real PPG dream on.
It's not really a finished song or anything.
3x Parts PPG and the pad is side-chained with the bass drum
1x Part ESM mono synth
1x Tr-909 & 707
EXS-24 Drum shots"

New iPad Synth from Waldorf and TempoRubato In the Works?

'Waldorf and Rolf Wöhrmann design pioneering new iPad synthesizer
A long tradition of wavetable synthesis – from first PPG synthesizers to the latest developments in terms of Blofeld and Largo – and Rolf Wöhrmann’s (TempoRubatos) vast experience with the iPad synthesis made it only natural to come up with a wavetable concept for the iPad, which, as a mobile platform, is becoming increasingly more significant to professional and semi-professional musicians and producers.

Thanks to intelligent gesture recognition and plenty of available graphic performance the iPad is perfect for bringing wavetable synthesis to a new level. For the first time it will be possible to plunge into the depths of wavetables and to make their sound content visible with advanced 3-D technology.

The cooperation between Waldorf and TempoRubato, also known for their product line NLog Synth, doesn’t stop here: The application will also offer new possibilities for sound manipulation based on Waldorf’s very latest spectral research.

Completely new and unheard sounds
An innovative approach to wavetable synthesis allows for the transposition of the spectrum and the balance of periodic and sound spectra entirely independent from a wave’s position. The existing wavetable technology is thereby extended by two new dimensions, and it allows for formant shifts as well as numerous other unheard sounds. Also, unlike with typical wavetable instruments, the number and length of waves in a wavetable will no longer be restricted. It’s the era of wavetable synthesis V2.0!

This app will support a huge number of hardware MIDI interfaces, e. g. all Core MIDI compatible interfaces by IK Multimedia, iConnectMIDI, MIDI Mobilizer II by Line6, ioDock or the Camera Connection Kit by Apple, as well as proprietary interfaces such as the SynthStation by Akai.

App collaboration standards like Sonoma‘s Audio Copy/Paste, Intua‘s Audio Pasteboard and Virtual Core MIDI will also be supported like the upcoming AudioBus standard and KORG’s WIST synchronization technology.

Joachim Flor, executive manager at Waldorf Music GmbH is pleased: 'We are truly excited about our collaboration with Rolf Wöhrmann from TempoRubato. Considering his great experience with the iPad synthesis we are planning to release this excellent synthesiser this summer. Then it will be available at the Apple App Store. It’s going to be an exciting time!'

Rolf Wöhrmann is also looking forward to the challenge: 'The cooperation with Waldorf Music and the Waldorf developers is a great honour. Waldorf‘s long history in wave table synthesis and the new and innovative possibilities of the iPad will create an astonishing synthesizer for musicians, sound designers and producers.'"

I'm not seeing Waldorf listed as a developer on iTunes yet. Curious what this will be branded under if real.
Currently I'm not seeing any info on http://www.waldorfmusic.de/ and no mention from the Musikmesse.

Happy New Year! The Year in Synths 2013

Happy New Year Everyone!

What a busy year it has been in the world of synths.

This is going to be one doozy of a post, so bear with me. This post is a review of the year in synths for 2013. We begin with Tributes to Those We Lost This Year, followed by New Manufacturers & Makers, Older Manufacturers Added to the Site, New Gear Announcements, Top 10 Posts by Traffic,  My Standout Posts for the Year, and finally This Years' Synth Events. I did my best to keep things as short and concise as possible.

Let's begin with the hardest part of the post.

Tributes to Those We Lost This Year

RIP Bernard Parmegiani - Electronic & Acoustic Composer
Lou Reed RIP
RIP Dick Raaymakers aka Kid Baltan
RIP George Duke - DreamWeaver
RIP Ralph Dyck, Sept 28, 1941 – May 20, 2013
RIP Ray Manzarek

All missed and never to be forgotten. Take a moment to remember them.

------

New Manufacturers & Makers

Starting last January, I decided to keep a running list of every new manufacturer and maker introduced to the site during the year.  This is something I haven't done before and I thought it would be interesting to see how many there were in the year.   It's easy to focus on the big synth announcements throughout the year, but what about all the new makers and brands? I shouln't have to go considerably into the significance of new designers on the scene, so I'll just say two things regarding them.  One, the number of new makers is a direct reflection on the interest in our scene, and two, these are the creators of new gear which directly translate into new designs not previously available to us.  Think about that for a moment.  These are makers and designs that did not exist before.  They are part of our synth history.  So what is the total count of new synth designers for the year? A whopping 113. Think about that a bit. One hundred and thirteen new synth designers and brands this year alone.

Here they are (note a handful date back to 2012, but 2013 marked their momentum and availability):

Stroke Machine for iPad Updated to v 2.0.4

iTunes:
Stroke Machine - Wolfram Franke

Wolframe Franke was previously with Waldorf. He was the developer behind Largo, PPG Wave 2.V & 3.V, Attack and Steinberg's V1. Stroke Machine is one of my favorite synths apps for the iPad.

"Stroke Machine is a professional Groove Synthesizer for the iPad.

New:
• Play your percussion sounds in the new Pad view.
• Mix your tracks in the new Mix view.
• Assign MIDI Controllers to any sound, effect or mixer parameter to control them with an external MIDI hardware controller.
• Audiobus 2 support including saving and loading of the current Stroke Machine kit.

What's New in Version 2.0.4

• Equalizer bands now react better to touches. When no handle has been touched exactly, the nearest band is used for setting its frequency and gain. This implies that you must touch the bandwidth handles exactly to change them, as it was in all previous versions.
• Fixed crash when double-tapping into an empty area of the oscillator or equalizer displays.
• Fixed rarely occuring wrong Automation behaviour.
• Fixed possible crash when removing steps.
• Fixed possible crash when playing the melodic keyboard.
• Fixed possible envelope misbehaviour.
• Improved reception of non-timestamped MIDI Clock from some apps.
• Fixed 24 bit sample playback in 64 bit version.
• Fixed incorrect LFO rates.
• Lots of little improvements and fixes.
• AudioBus V2.2.2.
• Note that this is the last version supporting iOS 6. All future versions are going to require a newer iOS version."
