"Electronically Modified Didgeridoo Kyle Evans

I created this instrument to experiment in the combination of the organic sound qualities of a didgeridoo with the advanced signal processing capabilities of modern computer programming and sound synthesis. This custom built didgeridoo features externally mounted modules that allow the performer to process and manipulate the sound of the instrument in real time. All control data is transmitted wirelessly via blue tooth and is controlling several audio processes created in a custom-built software environment. If you have any questions about the instrument please feel free to ask.

Automated Matrix Mixer Vid 1 (Improvisation)

YouTube via yakthekyle
"This is a short improvisation demonstrating my hand made automated matrix mixer. It is run by a micro controller I built based on the AT Mega-168 chip. The micro controller communicates with Max/MSP via serial communication. Max/MSP automates the levels of each channel based on a controlled probability random generator. The mixer can also communicate back to Max and change values in the patch."

Didgeridoo Improvisation - custom built controller for Max/MSP sound processing and synthesis

YouTube via yakthekyle
"This is a demonstration of my homemade didgeridoo controller. The controller communicates with Max/MSP via serial communication using a handmade micro controller circuit based on the ATMega 168 chip. I have it set up to control several levels of modulation, filters, delays and also trigger samples."

VHF Silicon - Kyle Evans - 2009

YouTube via yakthekyle

"VHF Silicon
Kyle Evans 2009

VHF Silicon is an interactive audio/video installation showed in SAICs spring 2009 undergraduate exhibition. This piece is an experiment in computer automation and the compatibility of old and new technologies. Computer generated digital processes are used to control and modulate three analog video signals. A computer program communicates with hand built analog circuitry by means of the Art Bus micro controller. The circuitry switches and modulates three separate analog video channels that are mixed and distorted onto an easily manipulated early 70s television set. Three ultra-sonic proximity sensors are placed surrounding the television each controlling a separate video signal and responding to viewers positions and movements throughout the space. Multiple viewers and relative proximity to the sensors all effect and modulate the displayed video. When the sensors are not being activated, the computer runs autonomously and begins randomly switching through the video signals. The sounds were created using an analog modular synthesizer and are synchronized to the switching and processing of their corresponding video."

Electronically Modified Didgeridoo controls realtime video processes

YouTube via yakthekyle (click for more including visuals of the didgeridoo)
This is the first steps in a new project of mine involving real-time video processing using the audio from my Electronically Modified Didgeridoo. This is a test of just some basic dynamic control from which much more complex control will follow as the project continues. Audio from the didgeridoo is filtered into bands in Max/MSP which are then used to control different parameters via a micro controller. Two video signals are being manipulated by means of dirty mixing and PWM through an analog switching chip. If anyone has some advice of just a good idea in regards to this project, please let me hear.

sine.magnet.phosphoresced. - SAIC Graduate Thesis Exhibition, Spring 2011

YouTube Uploaded by yakthekyle on Nov 15, 2011

"sine.magnet.phosphoresced.
Audio and Video Installation
Sullivan Galleries 2011

*The audio of this documentation includes low-frequencies
that cannot be reproduced without a capable sound system.

Media: Modified television, computer, speakers, sinusoidal waveforms (48Hz. 98Hz. and variable), and electromagnetism.

The cathode ray tube has become an antiquated and useless technology in this era of binary bits. This technology, by its current definition, acts as the quintessential representation of the rise and fall of technology in our rapidly progressing society. As a child outgrows a toy, we have collectively abandoned the CRT, casting it aside to be scavenged for valued metals in the proverbial wastebaskets of our cities.
For the piece sine.magnet.phosphoresced., the now obsolete cathode ray tube television takes on a monumental, sculptural form within an immersive sound environment. The intense visceral response to this obsolete technology implores the viewer to confront the detritus of technological progress and innovation.
Modern technology is used to drive the internals of the CRT giving the dated device a new voice. Though it brings new life to a dead technology, the process, since its initial installation, has been simultaneously destroying the CRT through the effects of ion burn seen in the center of the screen."

First Stages of a TV Transmission Project

YouTube via yakthekyle
"Check out http://yaktronix.blogspot.com/ for stills of my Max patch and more info.

This is an ongoing performative work that involves video transmission and audio/video synchronization. The video above demonstrates the beginning of a piece that I will be working on throughout the remainder of this year. I will try to add updates as much as possible through the evolution of the project.
As of now it consists of a handmade tunable video transmitter and a micro controller based on the ATMega 168 chip. Detuning the transmitter creates a multitude of visualizations and colors. Photo resistors on the TV detect light levels and communicate with Max/MSP for audio control."

de/Rastra - Oscillographic Synthesizer and Computer Interface - Kyle Evans (Performance Excerpts)

YouTube Published on May 13, 2012 by yakthekyle

"-de/Rastra

-For more info go to: http://yaktronix.com/derastra

-The de/Rastra oscillographic synthesizer is a real-time audio/video instrument and computer-interfacing device that allows a performer to generate visualizations intrinsic to cathode ray tube technology while simultaneously creating the acoustic analog of the displayed imagery. The de/Rastra oscillographic synthesizer is an open source project and will eventually be accompanied by tutorials on methods of CRT hacking. Related tutorials can be found at http://www.crackedraytube.com/textstutorials.html but specific information regarding de/Rastra are in progress."

Kyle Evans - Electronically Modified Didgeridoo Performance @ Georgia Tech

YouTube via yakthekyle. Be sure to see this video.
"A performance with my Electronically Modified Didgeridoo for the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition on Feb. 27 2010. In the finalists round, the competitors were given five minutes to describe and perform their instrument. Besides someone repeatedly stepping on my audio cable (and at one point disconnecting it completely) I thought my performance went pretty well. It was a good opportunity to try out some new techniques."

"This synth has two ring modulated square wave oscillators. Below each oscillator knob is an amplitude modulation control knob. Combining both of these modulation types creates some very rich and noisy waveforms full of side bands. The amplitude modulation can be turned on and off by the switch below each control knob. If carfully tuned, this synth will create some very intresting beating patterns. There is also a level control at the top right corner for accurate dynamic control.

Runs on an easy to replace 9V battery (INCLUDED)
Check out the pics and watch the video to listen to how it sounds.

1/4 inch output. ON/OFF switch. Blue ultra-bright LED Indicator Light.
Hook it up to effects like delay or distortion to expand the possibilities further.
Very sturdy and protective housing.

I hand make each of my synths and guarantee my products to work and sound GREAT.
